Obviously, if they hadn't censored "Gay" someone would be offended and everyone would be all over their asses regardless.

Yes because lawsuits against Microsoft for people misusing their chat clients are just piling up

Oh wait.

I'm sorry, I don't follow you.

What I'm saying is that any such lawsuit against Microsoft because people have been using racial/sexist/homophobic epithets on Live's voice client either doesn't exist or has been thrown out despite the lack of any censorship or even a competent system for banning people.

Actually let me make this easier by using what Sony ripped off to create Home, which is Second Life. There is very little in the way of censorship there at all, but people aren't lining up to sue because they "were offended" by some anonymous dickweed on it. That of course might be because in SL people can be banned right off of sims for that kind of behavior.

Well no duh, of course they don't want to make it look like "LIVE with more apartments!". When was the last time you heard someone use "gay" in it's actual term, "someone attracted to the same sex"?

Quite frequently actually since I have a few friends of the so-named "alternative lifestyles", and it is the word they use. I mean what else were they going to use to describe themselves. Queer maybe.

Wether it's "FAG" or "GAY" makes no difference to trolls or spammers, either way they want to say "YOU SUCK".

So basically you're now saying they'll just use "YOU SUCK" instead of the other words now that they're censored?

Fair enough. I know I was a bit overboard doing the whole "oh there are no greifers on PSN" bit but I think I pre-emptively wanted to bash that silly misconception into the ground. My apologies.

Blaming Live users for censorship is like blaming pirates for draconian DRM. If you implement a terrible solution to a problem you have no one to blame but yourself. Why not have "kid-friendly" areas where the filter is on, but leave it off in other areas? How about making the filter a client-side option, complete with a password lock so that parents can control what their kids see?

Others have implemented systems that let you avoid people and language you find offensive over and over again. There are plenty of examples that Sony could use to inform their design. There is just no excuse for this kind of idiocy. Open betas are to test stability of a system once significant numbers of people are connected. If you don't know what you're doing by the time everyone on earth can plug in then something is seriously wrong.

EVERYONE is forgetting the fact that Home is still an open Beta. wait for the full version to come out before bashing it about so much...

No. Now that Home is on the system menu by default AND has a version number greater than 1.0 AND is (over)charging real money for virtual stuff, they no longer get to pretend it's in open beta.

There is no magic beta shield anymore. Home has been launched.

erm... hate to rain on your parade but when you launch Home, it quite specifically says that its a BETA on the logo... Home isn't entirely here yet, and besides, even if it has been fully launched they can still tweak it.

What is really weird, is that when I log on, my words aren't censored. I even said the N word once.

I think it's only censored to other people, but I've seen other people say "Hello" without the little * things.

He knows. He's saying that that's just a farce, something they can use to deflect any criticism, and that it's long since passed the point where it's not a Beta; they can just get away with it because it is by nature an everchanging application.

Lets see, if they didn't censor those words, then the gay/lesbian/ect groups, would be bitching to sue sony for not doing somemthing about all the teenager children using 'omg thats gay', or 'omfg yoru gay' type phrases for everything.

They probably use the "Hello" quick-command. This would be truly ridiculous if even pre-written commands in home are also censored.

That was the same command that was censored in "****o". I used to think they were saying "Fucko". Who would waste time in typing out "Hello"? That was bad programing on Sony's behalf.

I thought the exact same thing. And spent a good hour wondering why everyone on the PS3 liked Phillip Clyde so much. Pity my wasted hour.

Back on topic, as someone previously said, I think the best way to do it is with an option. You have one for voice chat, Sony. Why not censoring? Even Puzzle Pirates had an option for censoring, and that's a Java-based game. Maybe throw in a quasi-censor option so we at least have some sort of idea what words are being censored. (And so I don't feel like a fool for thinking 'hell-o' is 'fuck-o'.)

Uh... No.

Do you know what "beta" means? Beta means that it's 95% complete in terms of content. All that needs to be done is some bug crunching. So any sweeping changes to the game is done in the Alpha stages, not beta.

This essentially means the "suck" is there to stay. Besides, there's no hope for a game that has a "suck" filled design philosophy.

Oh and by the way Censorship sucks in any form.

I just love the way everything in Sony's home feels like the perfect model of a dystopia. Sony try's to create the golden city on the hill with home but just ends up with something out a Geogre Orwell, Aldous Huxley novel. You're only allowed to do boring simple games over and over again. Your words and actions are always monitored and controlled. You are not allowed to create anything of your own. You own and have nothing there you are at the whim and mercy of your Sony overlords. Honestly your just Sony's little puppets when you are there. Home is the worst combination of capitalism and dictatorship around.

My thoughts on HOME

"**** *** *** ******* **** ** ** elephants **** *** ***"

Hey, your use of the word elephant has offended me! Why is that not censored!?

But seriously, it seems to me like the best thing they could have done would be to allow the users to set their own level of censorship, or at least turn it off or on.

I'd love to see their design documents.

Potty-mouths are bad

People will stop using our product if they see bad things*

Conclusion: Prevent all potty-words!

(*apart from our implementation of the system, which they'll love because we're Sony)

Even the greasemonkey profanity filter works better than that! At least they are smart enough to filter full words.

attempting to offend no1 offends everyone. Shock news!

true. but it's either offend everyone or face the wrath of 1000 angry Christan mothers who walked in and saw their innocent child being cussed out. they Sony gets sued for some BS. home is down and then everyone really losses

Wow, it only took 3/4 of a page before somewhat brought in the Christian angle again. It's nice to see that angst towards Christianity is alive and well in a non-christian related news item...because we all know *all* Christians are ultra right wing fanatics right and a factor in all censorship these days. The "hello" thing reminds me of the Trackmania games, in which you can turn on a multilingual language filter that censors words like "computer" and "captain" as well as the phrase "put a" because they contain French swear words.

I remember a filter that blocked "downstairs" and "Thailand."

LOL thats a fail and that they did go quite a bit over the top with not being able to say hello.

It's the fact that they blocked the words 'gay' and 'hello' in the first place that's the issue.

Really it does sound overdone, and overrestrictive.

Block faggot, but not gay.
Block fuckwit but not idiot.

I had a similar thing happen on WOW, where I ran the guild Sunken Temple Pilots, and we decided to split the guild, making a new one for raiders, called Black Temple Pilots. Turned out you couldn't use the word 'Black', even tho 'Black Temple' was a dungeon in the game. In the end we found we could call ourselves 'BlackTemple Pilots' instead of 'Black Temple Pilots' and it'd get around the auto filters, the human GMs understanding there was no racial motive but having no way to get around the censor.

Really tho, they've either gotta put some serious blocks in, or have monitors watching the place, or the first time someone types 'gay' in the wrong context, Sony are suddenly homophobic.

It's like blaming Sharpie for what's written on the toilet wall.

If only the majority of people weren't utter fuckwits, Sony wouldn't have to bother at all.

It's like chatrooms with draconic rules on topics and words, I've seen them where 'no politics' is a rule, it's kinda hard to talk about anything without some form of politics involved.
