Id Software President Todd Hollenshead Departs the Company

Todd Hollenshead

After 17 years, id Software President Todd Hollenshead has decided to move on to other things.

Todd Hollenshead has been with id Software for an awfully long time, with credits going all the way back to the original Quake. He was CEO of the company for 13 years and then became president when it was acquired by ZeniMax Media, more popularly known as Bethesda. But Bethesda has now confirmed that Hollenshead is no longer with the famed shooter studio.

"After many years with the studio, Todd Hollenshead decided to leave id Software to pursue other personal interests," Pete Hines of Bethesda told IGN. "While Todd was not part of the development teams, he was an integral part of id Software's success as the business head of the studio and we wish him the very best in his future endeavors."

Why Hollenshead left or what he'll get up to next isn't yet know, but id has been having a bit of a rough time of it lately. A sequel to Rage was reportedly canceled in April so the studio could focus on the development of Doom 4, which Hines said at the time "did not exhibit the quality and excitement that id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect."

Honestly, id hasn't been relavent for a long time. Their glory days in the 90s are long gone.

This pretty much sums up this entire story.

ID is dead everyone, nothing to see here, move along.

I don't get this mentality of "I've had enough here, I quit so I can be broke for a bit before I struggle to get another job and the added stress of going through the whole getting a job process"

I think 2 or 3 people have done it from the staff from this site alone.

I think the only reason to leave a job is if you 100% have another job in the bag to walk into.

It makes so much sense that the guy who helped make Quake looks like he stepped out of a death metal band.

Now now, he probably learned all of his hair care secrets from John Romero.

If Doom 4 can possibly surpass Doom 64 (that sounds weird to say) then more power to them. I know Id didn't make doom 64, which is why it was so good. I want to crap myself in terror as I have never done, and then promptly blow something's head off.

If it can just not suck as bad as Doom 3 I'm sure it will be a big success. Doom 3 is to Doom, what Deadspace 3 is to Deadspace. Embarrassing.

you dont get the " he left to pursue other opportunities" like say Patrice Désilets?

especially after he said that doom 4 isnt going nowhere...

It's HILARIOUS that they can't figure how to make DOOM 4, Having the same issues as Duke Nukem Forever I see.

It's painfully obvious why DOOM was a success, here are some points

-at the time of release it was one of the most graphic intensive games ever, yet it ran well on your general computer system.

-it was very moddable and is still one of, if not the, most modded games of all time. They still have Doom mod awards and a very active community. Worth popping on there if you have Doom 2 (or not, all you need is a copy of Freedoom, that will work too.) and want to try some of the neatest gaming experiences ever put to format. http://www.doomworld.com/cacowards/

-You had great environments to explore with secrets (which if are not included in DOOM 4, will make it an automatic failure.) and some really neat level elements.

Do those 3 things for the most part, and you got success.

It's Doom 4 for petesakes, your only gonna screw it up if you try to apply new "Vision" to the project, when in reality we want a throwback and not much else.

Good. id's recent failures were because of management issues. If they get a better man to rule them all, they'll make better games.

And there goes another studio I used to like... What a shame. They had a solid little game in Doom 3, Quake 4 was decent enough, too, but both weren't that great. And now that they've been digested by Bethesda, I don't really see a future for them. Me Sadface.

He's been CEO/president of one of the best known game developers in the world for 13 years. He's probably more worried about how many yachts he should buy than he is about being broke.

He might be minted but I know a couple of people who have left a min wage/just above min wage job with no other job prospects.

To me it's a daft thing to do, it's like cutting a blind corner ... sure you could get off scott free but there is a chance you will crash and burn.

Let id die already they have nothing worthwhile nor anyone able to make a good game out of it.

A poisonous work atmosphere is one of the worst and more horrible things to have to endure in your life. I've quit 2 jobs because of the people i was trapped with and i've honestly been much happier for it

As much as being a Doom fan, I can only see this as good news for Doom 4's development and hopefully Zenimax puts someone competent in his position. Id's days are pretty much a thing of the past, they really won't have another smash success like the original DOOM and DOOM 2..
