Persona Developer's Parent Company Files For Bankruptcy

 Pages PREV 1 2 3 NEXT

Doesn't every publisher and Hollywood movie studio completely fudge their numbers? I know that "Hollywood Accounting" is definitely a thing, James Earl Jones hasn't gotten paid royalties for being Vader because apparently Jedi hasn't turned a profit yet. Unfortunately (or fortunately, I guess), Atlus's company just got caught.

I do hope nothing affects them though, or at the very least they're able to retain their size. They along with a few small companies are keeping true JRPGS alive and experimenting constantly, being swallowed up by Square-Enix or something would be a disaster for the niche.

A sad event indeed...From my understanding, Atlus is not a separate entity from Index and as such won't be able to be properly sold,so it is possible that they will be sold in pieces thus marking the end of Atlus. But NeoGaf says that the parent company are trying to save them so maybe there is still hope left. We'll see..

Tony2077:
i will question and mock you for judging them on one game

I feel free to mock you for liking the kind of rubbish this developer makes, thank god there wont be any more of it.

J Tyran:
..."you know what as its free I will give it a go...

Nah, you couldn't be that entitled. We'll let that go. Let's take another look at what's going on here.

1) I like movies.

2) I hear a new movie by Flufflebutt Honeypore is coming out, possibly his Honeypore'ist yet.

3) I've never seen a movie by this director but everyone who has ever seen any of its movies anywhere says they're fantastic. OVERWHELMING WORD OF MOUTH AND FEEDBACK WORLDWIDE CORROBORATES THIS POINT.

4) To be honest, I didn't catch the movie when it first came out...truth to be told I didn't catch it until about two years later on Cinemax.

5) It didn't live up to my expectations, in fact, it was much more different than I was used to. Not at all like the other movies I'd ever seen; I didn't like it.

6) End result: I have decided that the only reasonable response to this scenario I find myself in is to not only hate the newly knighted Sir F. Honeypore, but every other one of his creations despite never having watched them, and to actively cheer the financial troubles of the studio that helps to fund his projects.

Yeah, that seems reasonable. Carry on, then.

Lets answer this step by step,

1- That was really just an example of some different circumstances and never inferred I paid for the game (good job too has it has no value). If you want to step around a direct implication of entitlement thats up to you

2- I checked a JRPG for the first time in years

3- Everybody tells me how great they are all the time, they never live up to the hype they get and often frankly do not deserve any recognition at all.

4- No answer needed, a game is a different medium and this game has undergone little or no change in content since release.

5- It lived up to my expectations, my very worst expectations. Actually, no thats not true, it went beyond them it was that bad. I thought people joked about how bad JRPGs can get I was in for a very rude awakening, I actually wonder what kind of deranged person would actually enjoy this game.

6- No I will never play one of their games again and it will be long years before I pluck up the courage to play another JRPG ever again, if ever. These games are obviously not worth either any money or download time. As for cheering? Never did that just a dispassionate remark that if their games are anything to go by little of value will be lost. Mr Flufflebutt Honeypore isnt getting knighted I am afraid he is out of business, this fact speaks volumes when judged in concert with the quality of their games.

People are all talking about Persona and Catherine, but WHAT ABOUT DARK SOULS!?

IllumInaTIma:
This would be a perfect opportunity for Sony to fuel up their PR train even more. Swoop in, buy Atlus, and make their games exclusive to PlayStation. Boom! Everyone wins. Okay, almost everyone. But it is still better than letting that amazing company die!

That would be great! However, I'm banking on Square making the highest bid, should it come to a sale.

Why would Square be interested in Atlus? They already have their bunch of developers and Final Fantasy series as their JRPG mascot. I think if it comes to sale it's gonna be a fight between Sony and Nintendo seeing how Persona series were always PlayStation exclusive and SMTIV being 3DS exclusive. Although, if Atlus gets bought by any of these major companies, does that mean that Atlus will stop being a publisher?

rubbish the only rubbish i see is you judging the developer on Catherine try playing one of there real jrpgs. if you still don't like them that's fine but others do so i will hope they stay alive

ciancon:

Dark Souls I and II are Namco Bandai, your thinking of Demon's Souls which is just published by Atlus, not developed by. Sony owns the Demon's Souls IP.

OT: All I can say is I hope none of the big three or Capcom buy it. I rather not have any of the big three since they will make all of the games exclusives and not Capcom because of their DLC and because their refusal to release games in the US.

J Tyran:
**snip**

You seem to have an active internet connection, and apparently a mind to go with it. I just wonder how you missed all the reviews on Catherine and what it was about. If it interested you enough to try it, why you wouldn't give the few moments it takes to read a review of it makes no sense. Also, as iterated here multiple times, judging a company by SONY's mislabling of a game (should have been labeled puzzle or platformer) is relatively stupid. Oh, wait I see, you're predisposed to hating JRPG's anyway so it wouldn't have mattered. Its fine to dislike a certain genre for personal taste reasons, its another thing to go beyond personal taste and put others down for liking something you don't and wishing hateful things on them because you yourself didn't do the due diligence and READ A REVIEW.
BTW, I'm not always the biggest ATLUS supporter, a lot of their games promised much (IMO) and delivered less but I don't judge dev's by one title. Even though some of their games sucked (opinion) I still bought more because I heard good things about them (Persona series) and enjoyed them.
OT: I hope that for the sake of the people who work on and put their hearts into these games that they don't lose their jobs over a parent company's stupidity.

Judging by the games they make nothing of value will be lost, I was tricked into trying one of them once. They had "Catherine" on PS+ for ages advertised as an RPG, I thought "you know what as its free I will give it a go, maybe I will change my mind about JRPGs if I try a newer one", what a mistake that was. A 10GB download later and what did I get?

Some sort of weird softcore porn girlfriend simulator.

Way to confirm my bias about a genre Index Holdings.

try one the the real jrpgs they've made or published before you judge them

If you went to a cinema and spent 12 on a ticket to watch a film and the film was the weirdest garbage you have ever seen would you in all honestly go and watch another one by that filmmaker and director etc again? Answer that honestly and not answer in defense of a genre or developer you like because that isn't what I asked. If you like this stuff you like it and I wont question that or mock you for liking it but I would rather avoid playing anything by them ever again.

Uh... yes.

Let me put it this way; you basically saw cars 2 and decided to never watch a pixar film again.

Or watched a Disney direct-to-dvd sequel and decided that everything they've ever made is crap.

Or saw kingdom of the crystal skull and swore yourself off of spielberg movies forever.

You should really let a game speak for itself.

I mean, plenty of excellent companies have made some REALLY shitty games, in addition to whatever good ones they've made.

Personally, I've never played Catherine, but I do know it is not an RPG and is absolutely nothing like any of the SMT games. Meanwhile, I know Persona 4 is among the greatest RPGs I've ever played. Right up there with Chrono Trigger.

J Tyran:

I am afraid he is out of business, this fact speaks volumes when judged in concert with the quality of their games.

I presume this is supposed to be a reference to the parent company spoken of at hand.

Argument from ignorance.

This bankruptcy has little or nothing to do with the quality of the lesser companies' products.

I've been replaying Persona 4 again. I'm so excited for Persona 5. Please please let Atlus be ok. Please. I've just ordered Persona 2 and Digital Devil Saga. Atlus are so unique and wonderful, the game industry would lose something great if they lose them.

Why would Square be interested in Atlus?

Because Square specialise in JRPGs, and the Persona series, amongst other franchises, will make them money. After all, Square merged with Enix, another highly successful RPG company, to become Square Enix. They've also bought up several other JRPG developers in the past. Why not a successful business like Atlus?

Innegativeion:
Meanwhile, I know Persona 4 is among the greatest RPGs I've ever played. Right up there with Chrono Trigger.

I got my Vita and Persona 4 Golden recently and have been playing it constantly ever since. The only question I have is: how come I didn't realize this game sooner???

It's mechanics are very well designed, the story is excellent and the characters are beary memorable. At this point, I'd say that Persona is everything that Final Fantasy was back in the day, and then some. Awesome.

Also, I'm looking forward to some of the special holiday scenes with some of the cast of Persona. *eyes avatar*

I hope this doesnt mean any radical shift or change for atlus.

Well, this makes me nervous. I hope the devs pull through this without trouble.

So? You don't seem to like the genre to begin with. Not to mention that Catherine isn't even an actual JRPG.

J Tyran:
4- No answer needed, a game is a different medium and this game has undergone little or no change in content since release.

Retail games tend not to change over time either. They might get expansions and patches here and there, but they don't fundamentally change.

J Tyran:
6- No I will never play one of their games again and it will be long years before I pluck up the courage to play another JRPG ever again, if ever. You don't like JRPGs. Congratu-fucking-lations. Now get over it. Let people like what they like and stop trashtalking them for it, for god's sake.

How surreal.
I'm not particularly a fan of the Persona and SMT games, but I've always loved a lot of the handheld games they've published. (Shining Soul II, Summon Knight: Swordcraft Story II, Riviera The Promised Land, Yggdra Union and such)

This is really sad.

Don't worry, Catherine is an oddball. I tend to enjoy a lot of Atlus's games, but I hated Catherine as well.

I know quite a few rabid Persona fans... I don't think I want to be...around them...for a bit.

Let me reverse psychoanalyze your statement there. Here is a separate but equal scenario:

I haven't played a FPS in years, I've never been able to stand the perspective, and have always thought that the pacing is terrible and poorly written. So I picked up Fallout 3 on a Steam Sale, as it's been labeled a First Person Shooter, and since lots of people seem to love it, I figure "why the hell not, it's only three bucks." Two days of download time later (my internet really sucks, okay?), I load it up. I spend maybe 10 minutes struggling around the wasteland, unable to figure out this weird compass or get used to the clunky and slow-paced combat, and when I do find out hwere to go, I hate the stilted animation, poor voice acting, and mediocre story. So I drop it, and when I see Bethesda having hard financial times, I go to the comments section and tell everyone that it's good, because they ruined First Person Shooters for me (despite the fact that I just admitted I hated FPS already) and that because Fallout 3 was a terrible FPS, all of Bethesda's games are complete crap and they deserve to die in a fire.

Here we have several major problems, the biggest being confirmation bias, aka I'm allowing one perception of events to cover over obvious facts. Firstly, Fallout 3 is a Western RPG, not a FPS. Yes, ostensibly it's an FPS, but it does not have the feel of one or many of the gameplay elements. So not only am I judging one company or genre of games by a single game in it, I'm judging said genre by one game that ISN'T IN THE FREAKING GENRE. That's like saying I hate puzzle games because of Tetris, or survival games because of Minecraft. Or, to get political, it's like saying I hate Obama because he's Muslim.

And, just to be clear as to where I'm coming from, I do like JRPGs, but have no love for Atlus (I could never get into the Persona games, thought Catherine was a slog, and ragequit Demon's Souls hard). All I'm trying to say is you should be a little more open-minded about things, and when you want to be closed-minded (everyone has that right, God knows I'm there on plenty of issues) know what you're blaming and why. Don't just start shooting off random things. If you want to hate something, hate it for a legit reason, not some bullshit that isn't true.

Also Fallout 3 kicks ass and I am a huge FPS fan. The above scenario was made up from an amalgamation of various friends.

Fappy:
It would just be speculation at this rate. I'd prefer they stick to facts.

Finding out how this form of bankruptcy affects a company and its holdings would hardly be speculation.

It woulds. Remember when THQ went under, people specilated what will happen t the assets. and the only facts we gt was after the auctino was ended. everything before that was just guesses. and even now we dont know all that is done to those IPs by the new owners.

All we can hope is that capcom somehow forgets about it.

why do you think i endured all twilling movies? or chipwrecked? also there are a lot of directors that do a hit or miss all the time (the bob-hated Shyamalan for example). And i often find a lot of wicked gems from directors who make C-grade stuff. then aggain i watch A LOT of movies (think - over 3000 rated now).
But your pint is fair, average person wouldnt, because he is fllowing confirmation bias and judging all genre by one movie.

no, movies first!

I hope atlus survives this. They make good games. It would sux to see Altus broken up.

I really hope this doesn't mean no more Megami Tensei and Persona games.

I do not just condemn them, I decry them and question their need to exist in the first place. I am glad you do not want to be like me for it is a heavy burden I must carry, someone must do it. If not me who else is up to the task? Many people are not as this thread illustrates.

When a game is that bad it says everything that needs to be said, if you imagine a person that generally acts in a nice way. They help pensioners cross the road, they are respectful to their parents and donate money to charity. What happens if they go out and commit a serious crime? Do you forgive them and let them get away with it because at all other times they are nice?

No you judge them according their crime.
