Xbox One Designed "With Advertising in Mind"

"With the new Xbox One, the technology and Kinect has improved a lot, so that actually the voice recognition, the way you speak to your Xbox and the transition between gaming and watching TV is a lot smoother, and hopefully we can transpire that into advertising that we do." He went on to say that the new Xbox One dashboard was designed "with advertising in mind."

I'm tired of seeing the little videos on advertisement on the current xbox dash board. Because currently my xbox is saying I'm a female and I get ads about maxi pads, shampoo and razors. While my boyfriend gets Wendy's, dr pepper and old spice. When I go to play I don't want to be reminded of my woman problems, thanks xbox...

If the xbox one picked up my voice and showed me a 3 minute clip or twilight or beverly hills housewives....
There would be no ending to my rage and hate....

shit.... the entire time i had this nasty feeling that this thing is not marketed towards gamers, but companies/developers/god know who elses.....

Its official. The gamers are part of the product, that is Xbox One.

The more I hear of every xbone announcement the more the image of sideshow bob stepping on multiple rakes springs to mind. Sorry but don't know how to insert images.

So the xBox One was specifically designed with corporate interests in mind?

I also love how even the ad team is having none of the smartglass and tablet bullshit.

Jim talked about this, just because they're goal is to make money, that doesn't excuse horrible anti-consumer business practices. You can make try to money buy pleasing your consumer base and delivering quality products that build brand loyalty and trust, or you can attempt to make money by trying to fuck consumers in the ass and hoping they won't mind too much. Guess which path the Xbox One has been going down.

Sony, screws up on the PS3 designs the PS4 with games and gamers in mind.

Microsoft does well with the 360 and designs the One with advertising and people who watch advertising in mind?

Whose on their frickin' PR team? How can they be this bad? I really hope it's just some guy who walked in off the street and he's having a big old laugh at Microsoft now.

EDIT: I think we can safely say the Xbone would be more popular right now if they'd put a brick in charge of public relations. That's a special kind of awful

Waitwaitwaitwait.

DATA MINING?

This is going to be a ton of fun to watch unfold in court.

Gather round friends....and hear the tale of plight that is Microsoft's.

Once...there was a little Microsoft. Say hello Microsoft! "Hello!" ^.^

He developed software, hardware, and was one of the big dogs of the entertainment industry. He wasn't perfect...but then...who is? He was successful and popular, and Microsoft was doing just fine.

But then one day, Microsoft got greedy and decided he wanted to dig for the legendary gold booty that is said to rest in the backyard of Mr. Consumer.

Mr. Consumers backyard was hard earned land, but he didn't mind sharing a little bit of it. But Mr. Consumers backyard was not public property...nor was it very steady or reliable.

Microsoft decided that he was going to build a special shovel to mine for this gold. It was ugly and heavy, and was sure to give children splinters if they so much as looked at it. Microsoft called his shovel the "Xbone".

Microsoft took his shovel and started digging for the fortune. The shovel split a water pipe, killed a lizard and flicked dirt and mud onto Mr. Consumers windows (who was getting very cross).

Mr. Consumer yelled out "Microsoft stop! Stop what you are doing right now! You are doing more harm than good!" But Microsoft forged on ahead, not realizing that the pit he was digging was turning into a sinkhole. Before long, the ground beneath Microsoft's feet gave way, and swallowed him up to his chest in thick mud and jabbing rocks.

"Whats going on?! Why is this happening?!" Cried Microsoft, squirming in place and obviously confused. He tried to climb out of the hole he had dug, but he simply could not".

By this time, the mean jerk down the street, Old Man Sony, who always had it out for Microsoft, had realized what was happening. Old Man Sony took this opportunity to point and laugh at Microsoft, and even sent Mr. Consumer a letter, telling him all about how his shovel would be much easier for him to use. A fact Mr. Consumer was now seriously considering.

Mr. Consumer came out of his house, and looked with equal parts amazement and disappointment as the appalling mess Microsoft had gotten himself into. Microsoft looked up, embarrassed, and Mr. Consumer said:

"Microsoft, if you want to get out of this hole, you have to drop that silly Xbone, its just weighing you down and you wont be able to climb out of this hole and clean yourself up as long as you are holding onto it."

Reluctantly, and with wounded pride, silly Microsoft let go of his Xbone. He apologized to Mr. Consumer, who offered his hand and helped Microsoft start climbing out of the ugly hole. Mr. Consumer felt a degree of pity for the silly mistake Microsoft had made, and even started to see that ugly old Xbone surface from the muck, free of its many tacky add-ons.

Just then...right as Microsoft was starting to get a good grip on the grass, he turned to Mr. Consumer and said....

"Oh uhh, hey...by the way. The Xbone is going to stay here, in your backyward forever, watch what you do, what you buy and how you speak and use that information to sneak advertisements in your front letterbox that are specifically tailored to you. Because I'm pretty sure that fortune is around here somewhere haha!"

Mr. Consumer then broke a cricket bat over Microsofts head, had his corpse removed from his property and contemplated why he ever trusted that fucking idiot to be anywhere near him in the first place.

The more I see Microsoft these days the more I am reminded of the end of the Simpsons episode "the old man and Lisa".

Mind explaining this, just I remember the episode, but what party is MS?

babinro:
There's already plenty of ads on the PS3 and 360.
I see no reason to get upset by this non-specific information.

If they start creating loading screens in games that play 30 second t.v commercials then we'll have a problem.

What ads on the PS3 ? Only ads I get are for product they are selling through their online store, due to system booting on xoxo thing and when you log into the store.

Shanicus:
You know what, I want one of these things now. I'm going to buy one, sit down in front of it and read it the filthiest, dirtiest, most mind-fucking fanfiction/porn out there, just to see if they can tweak their ads to suit what the kinect is hearing.

Seriously Microsoft, unless I start seeing advertisements for 'Tentacle Monster versus All-Girls Highschool' or 'Sonic and Naruto: Star-crossed Lovers' after the first three readings, I will be very disappointed in you.

You mental bastard...
I LOVE IT! XD

Boku no Pico is a must for that list, see them find suitable Ads for THAT.

OMG Microsoft, shut the hell up, every announcement you make is just an advertisement for Sony.

Hey, Microsoft! When they say "go for broke" this isn't what they mean... unless your trying really hard to actually be broke.

I'm willing to bet its not as bad as it sounds, still at this point it looks like Microsoft is doing there best to sell the PS4

They're basically advertising that their new console is an advertising machine. LOL, What a bunch of monsters. Also, idiots.

Ohh, I really want to buy this just to see if it is possible to troll it.

Hmm, I think I am coming down with a sudden case of Tourettes.

Desert Punk:

RatherDull:

Seriously, we pay 500 dollars and pay for Xbox Live and you're STILL charging us out the asshole. This cannot end well.

This bears repeating.

You want to charge me half a G, 60 dollars a game, AND CHARGE ME FOR ONLINE PLAY, then, ontop of it all, you want to put advertisements on my console AND spy on me to try to target those ads better?

Fucking seriously?

For some reason Microsocks seems to be hell-bent on making every press release and public conference dig their new products' grave deeper and deeper. Maybe they decided to see how low they can sink before the crusade starts.

This Kinnect thing always been my Number 1 problems about the X-Box one, and my fear seem to become reallity... I sure wont buy one of thouse

Thanks for putting me in a good mood before getting the groceries, Steven.
There is more fun on the horizon.

And the Xbone continues the trend of being everything bad about a gaming PC with none of the positives. Hell, ads on the PC are the price you pay for games/services being free. Making me look at the trailer for the latest in spunk gargle wee wee when I've already paid a few hundred quid up front plus a subscription fee and the price of each game is beyond cheeky.

But that barely needs saying at this point...what I would like to ask is if the Escapist could start using a different picture for their Xbone-related news articles? I know I've got no right to demand this, but I'm just so sick of that guy's fucking face and his stringy little coif.

You have adverts on cable, when you pay for it. You have adverts on pages on the internet and you pay for the use of the internet. As long as the adverts arnt in your face and obstructive, then i dont really care. I think this site needs to calm down and wait till an actual XBone is unboxed and plugged in and we can see how it works. What the advert part is like and other features. An then decide. XBone is like a Nazi Swastika - as in when you see it your brain automatically connects it with negative things.

I understand, you, like me, are fans of 360. It sucks that MS is giving us so many reasons to NOT by the XBone. Its like meeting the girl you love, and then out comes all these negatives and you are conflicted about how many negatives you can accept before you throw in the towel.

I give the Xbone ... four ... no, five days after launch before they "alter" their advertising strategy, because that is how long it will take before some parent flips out and sues Microsoft because an ad for an adult website or gun shop appeared on their 8 year-old's Dashboard because he's been playing Grand Theft Auto all weekend.

Desert Punk:
The first ads on Xbox One: "Have you considered the Playstation 4?"

That would be awesome!

The marketing department must be just getting a big wheel of stuff the Xbox One is for and throwing darts to decide which parts to divulge and which not to.

SonOfVoorhees:

That is not an excuse.

Dude, you made my day! I laughed for a solid 15 minutes!

What wonder kinds of ads would you get after cursing violently at your Kinect? "Visit our Website; Anger Management in 12 Easy Steps", "Have you considered buying the book '27 ways to Improve your vocabulary'?", "Talk to your doctor about this new medicine that is proven to prevent embarrassing outbursts"

And what happens if you start being polite to it? Does it lock your account because it things it has been compromised? "You are not being beligerant or crude. You are, therefore, not the owner of this account and will be banned from playing any games on this console until you can prove you are the owner of this account." &*@$*%!* "Welcome back, Player!"

Wow Microsoft, you've already sold us on your new product and now you just keep making things better. I want to get one of these on launch, heck make that two.

Now reverse the sentiment of that paragraph. It's like they actively want us to hate their product isn't it?

It's the one where mr burns goes bankrupt and Lisa shows him that he doesn't have to be so evil to succeed so she teaches him about recycling and being kind to the environment. A changed man, he builds up his forture again by picking up litter and selling it for recycling till he has enough money to build a factory made from and uses pure recyc in honor of his new friend Lisa... That uses plastic beer rings to make a huge net for fishing the local seas which is then turned into pet food. He thinks he's doing good when he is infact doing even greater evil. It's my favourt episode.

That's some evil shit, right there.

Well, I can't fault them for trying to make more money, somehow. Pissing in peoples mouths is not a good way to do that, but then there'll still be a horde of people waiting to buy this. So it only justifies their disgusting business models.

babinro:

I think the biggest issues are:

- it being designed with advertising in mind
- the kinect listening to all words in order to tailor ads to you, when it's only supposed to be listening for "key words" related to its function. Which even if true meant that it was listening to all words and simply "disregarding" the non "key words."

Alright, Cheers, just needed some context in order to fully understand what you were getting at.

Desert Punk:

Objection! They said $60 for FIRST PARTY games. I don't think they've mentioned how much 3rd party games will cost. Which gives me reason to think they will cost more.

I've tried explaining this crap to people at work and why to jsut avoid the Xbox and get a PS4 or join me and I'll help them build a tower. No luck. Why? "All my friends play on Xbox and I think it's a good console." That is why we call "not listening." They are completely fine with this crap.

I am really a big MS hateboy BUT they actually managed to make me concerned about them... oO

Wth is going on with their PR department? Why would you even announce this?
And again, what I really don't understand, if you DO announce it, at least make it somewhat tasty... even if they are lies or only half truths, say what WE get out of this, why should WE think this is not a bad thing...

Or at least wait until the dust has settled on your previous blunders...

maybe they are running a bet or something... We can make all the wrong decisions, announce the like they are awesome without explaining why they would be awesome and people will still buy our product en masse!

The sad thing is they would probably win this bet...

Wow is all I can say really, MS please get your stuiff together because I was really getting tired ranting on you, but you can't let a week pass without something new to butch about... oh gods...

babinro:
There's already plenty of ads on the PS3 and 360.

The only "ads" on PS3 are a ticker at the top (which you can toggle on and off) and the What's New segment on the XMB (which you don't have to look at).

Both of which only concern themselves with items in the PlayStation Store.

The 360's dash with place ads just about anywhere, advertising just about anything.

unstabLized:
And here I was, thinking they were fixing themselves up! Glad they're not, it's more fun to watch stuff crash and burn from a PC chair when it comes to the Xbone (No offence to console users). I can so imagine the ad with the voices.

"Xbox, launch CoD: Ghosts"

"WOULD YOU LIKE TO ADOPT A PUPPY FROM YOUR NEAREST ANIMAL SHELTER? POGO IS JUST LOOKING FOR A LOVELY HOME!"

pfff, casual, nothing beats a PC BED.

get le biff'd.

OT: What's that Microsoft? You heard that I thought the Casual Box was a piece of shit and wasn't getting one? You want to make my decision easier by making a console that now you flatly admit is made for advertisements and TV while games take a back seat?

Why thank you! You make me feel like an idiot for defending the 360 for all these years.

Quit being a Company, anytime now.

I've used my router to block ads.... it's really handy. My Xbox 360 is unable to display ads, but as a side effect I can't watch Hulu. They detect the ad wasn't played and refuse to play.
