Saints Row IV "Low Violence" Version Appears in Australia

Saints row IV screen

A "low violence" version of Saints Row IV has reportedly been spotted in the land Down Under.

Despite the hopes of Australian gamers that the long-overdue introduction of an R18+ rating would finally mean unfettered access to "mature" videogames, the Australian Classification Board gave the thumbs-down to Saints Row IV last month, refusing to classify it, and thereby effectively prohibiting its sale, because of "interactive, visual depictions of implied sexual violence which are not justified by context" and "elements of illicit or proscribed drug use related to incentives or rewards," both of which are against the rules of Australian law, even for R18-rated games.

But all is not lost! According to Kotaku Australia, Steam users in the country may now preorder a "low violence" version of the game. Deep Silver declined to comment so what exactly this version cuts isn't known, but the publisher did say when the classification refusal was originally announced that it is "reworking some of the code to create a version of the game for this territory by removing the content which could cause offense."

A low violence version of Saints Row IV would presumably satisfy Australia's censors, who I guess are still pretty tightly wound, but will it satisfy Australian gamers - especially now that the country has a rating designed to accommodate just this sort of game? I rather doubt it.

Fuck you ACB, fuck you.

Sooo, this is the equivalent of finally turning 21 and being old enough to drink alcohol.....oh, wait, you can only have the watered-down beverages despite being the legal age

How about they replace all the dead bodies with koala roadkill
unless the classifications board considers Australians too fragile to drive down to the local pub

Jesus, it's like two steps forward, one step back with these guys. Make an 18+ rating but WAIT THIS GAME IS INAPPROPRIATE FOR MATURE ADULTS NO FUN ALLOWED.

Question is - which version is Germany getting? Default for a change or once again Low Violence? So far, it seems to be uncut.

They should just call this the Pansies edition.

It was made to appeal to the pansies on that retardo board so they might as well name it after them.

"Gratuitous Sexual Violence" huh? So how much you want to bet it was hitting people in the nuts or a weapon that does the same.... But given it is SR I am betting it launched said person into space.

It's only going to be technically less violent. I'm sure it'll go right over the heads of those shitpickle sensors.

So is Australia officially the no fun capital of the world now?

So instead of a dildo bat, the Aussies have to use a wiffle bat? Not to mention that the Kiwis will be stuck with the same version by proxy even though they don't have the same ratings board.

"interactive, visual depictions of implied sexual violence which are not justified by context"

Odds are they mean 'you beat someone with a dildo bat' again. But even if they let you just up and rape anyone you see, it's still a video game, it's still fiction and it shouldn't be banned.

It was an "alien probe" weapon. You can imagine where the "probe" goes. I think after probing, you could then actually launch the person, though.

I think it'd be awesome if they made this "low violence" version a big parody of the rating system. Make rainbows shoot out of people instead of blood, have the guns fire puffballs, etc.

You know if I were Volition I'd put in some anti-censorship messages into this new version.

Something like 'the Australian government/the Australian censorship board doesn't think you can handle fictional violence and/or fictional drug use. If you think they should lay off the censorship send a message to them at [publicly available contact address of the censorship board]'.

I'm conflicted. On the one hand: censorship is bad, and those who practice it should feel bad. On the other hand: LOL, suck it Australia! :D

meanwhile in australia:

well, its better than no game in the end.
they are moving forwards only not in the pace most people would like them to go.

While I tend to agree with you, all that will happen is you piss off the busy bodies that allow your game in in the first place and if you publicly embarrass them they'll make it a mission to go after you.

Why do you not like Australia?

Yeah but then you can keep doing it in every new game they wish to censor.

If it becomes a pattern then outright mock them in a mission.

If they start applying you extra censorship well then maybe
you can bring it up on the news how inconsistent they are.

So let me get this straight, Australia introduced an 18+ rating so they could definitively treat adults like children?

If not, that's what it looks like.

I would be fairly confident in saying that Germany will get the edited version. It seems like they have it worse than us over there. And if by some miracle Germany does get the original version I can see many Australian gamers being pretty pissed off.

Why is always AU and DE getting shafted because of the violent content? :|

Like I said, I'm not disagreeing with tacking on a 'F*** you ACB' message but it's not a smart business practice unless your company has nothing to lose. Deep Silver has interests globally so telling one gov't to piss off (unless it's a gov't no one likes anyways like North Korea) will possibly have repercussions when dealing with other non aussie censor boards.

Odd title considering the complaints were regarding positive depiction of drug use and forced sodomy. Did they reduce the violence and keep the drug use? What about the sexual assault? Do they use rohypnol before they shove a probe up someone's arse? But that would be drug use again.
All in all I'm confused as to how a "Low Violence Version" solves the issues.

What was the bloody point of them fighting for a R18+ rating and then not using it???

Treating Australians like adults does not allow them to portray illegal drugs in a positive manner, nor does it allow sexual violance (aka rape), according to the ratings board. While I don't like censorship to be rather honest people are blowing this overboard to get clicks. Movies and TV are also given the same rules, this isn't an anti gaming move it's actually what was always wanted, that games fall in line with the rest. I also point out that it is only stopping this version being sold here, it's quite easy to just import a copy and legal too.

Also I find Andy's screwing the facts for a sensationalist headline disgusting, but it's atleast shown me how trustworthy news from this site is.... about as much as fox news.

Tien Shen:

It is being used, R18+ does not mean anything can be sold regardless of legality. See above ^^

Now weather the rules regarding R18+ in our media needs updating or amending is another question, but that'd be best discussed in another topic.

Glaice:

It isn't violent content that's gotten shafted, it's showing illegal drugs and sexual assault (rape basically) in a positive way/light. That gets an RC in movies and TV as well, and while in this case it's arguable weather it's in context you can't say they don't have a point.

Awesome! I hope the new Probe is called the huganator, and it hugs people until they explode into rainbows. I also hope they put parodies of as many Australian political figures as possible into the game. And make them enemies attacking the public and generally being assholes.

Aaaaand something tells me a lot of IP address ranges on Torrent sites will come from Aussieland, come the game's (cracked) release...

This kind of censorship accomplishes nothing. If any Australian wants to play the non-square version of a game they're interested in, they can just hit their favourite tracker. Better yet, I'm sure Green Man or other outlets of that sort are going to carry the American version *for* the Australian market.

Basically, as soon as the product you're trying to censor is available in downloadable form - your censorship attempt fails automatically.

I wouldn't be so sure, since the some of the past decisions of the USK were totally nuts. Portal had to be cut (although minimal). Dead Space is uncut, but Fallout is cut. DAFUQ?

Valve already did that with Team Fortress 2:

Was rated KJ (18+) in Germany anyway...

They already had this chance with SR 2 in Germany. Instead, they removed all gore and censored the FMV's with black screens.

Not to mention what they did to Painkiller and Bulletstorm...

The USK acts pretty random anyway.

San Andreas was rated USK 16 after they removed blood stains and cash drops from pedestrians, but the entire respect-for-killing-cops part stood intact.

Still importing and I get the game as was intended. So everybody wins... except Australian games retailers. But they've been ripping me off for quite some time, so they can get stuffed for all I care.

The "implied sexual violence" is due to the Anal Probe weapon where, well, you ram it up a person's butt, and ... probe.
That's what other sources have mentioned.

SR is cartoon violence. lol.
