Aquaman Named "Most Toxic Superhero" Online

Aquaman

Research by online security company McAfee has determined that Aquaman is the superhero most likely to screw up your computer with spyware, viruses or other forms of malware.

Aquaman gets no respect. And really, why should he? He's probably a holy terror with the Clownfish Mafia or the Sea Turtle Yakuza, but on the surface - where crime actually happens - he's not exactly hell on wheels. He's a strong guy, sure, but let's face it, his hook (so to speak) is that he talks to fish. But there is one superhero list he tops: The list of heroes most likely to bugger up your computer by leading you to a threatening site.

According to online security expert Robert Siciliano, McAfee determined that searching for "Aquaman and free torrent download," "Aquaman and watch," "Aquaman and online" or "Aquaman and free trailer" carried with it an 18.6 percent chance of leading to a site that's tested positive for spyware, adware, spam, phishing, viruses and/or other malware. That makes the man in green and yellow number one on the list of "Most Toxic Superheroes" online, well ahead of luminaries like Iron Man, Superman, Thor, Wolverine and Spider-Man.

The list in full:

  1. Aquaman -18.60%
  2. Mr. Fantastic - 18.22%
  3. The Hulk - 17.30%
  4. Wonder Woman - 16.77%
  5. Daredevil -16.70%
  6. Iron Man - 15.63%
  7. Superman -15.21%
  8. Thor - 15.10%
  9. Green Lantern - 15.00%
  10. Cyclops - 14.40%
  11. Wolverine - 14.27%
  12. Invisible Woman - 12.40%
  13. Batman - 12.30%
  14. Captain America - 11.77%
  15. Spider-Man - 11.15%

And why, you may wonder, is McAfee spending time (and, one would assume, money) coming up with new ways to say that Aquaman sucks? "With the resurgence of the superheroes into mainstream movies (think Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America to name a few), hackers are leveraging their popularity to target consumers. Hackers are most successful when they can attract a large number of victims," Siciliano wrote. "One way to target big crowds online is to track current events-everything from celebrity meltdowns and natural disasters to holidays and popular music-and now, superheroes."

That doesn't explain why Aquaman would top the list, assuming a direct correlation between the popularity of the character and the likelihood that someone would search for it. Perhaps it's a stealth maneuver - "Nobody would ever think we'd waste our time with Aquaman!" - or maybe it's just the vagaries of McAfee's statistical model. Whatever the reason, at least Aquaman is finally number one at something - but he's still nowhere near as cool as Namor.

Pretty obvious. It's percentage.
More popular superheros have more legit fan sites devoted to them.

Petty revenge for dumping all that industrial waste in the ocean.

Gettin' real tired of people picking on Aquaman. It's getting really old. Pick someone else to make fun of dammit.

Stop right there.
He has a magical Trident, rules 70% of the damn planet, and need I say that he once did this?

Oh, yeah. And that's New 52 as well. Post reboot, so its true shit.

Also, in Justice, he survived his own lobotomy to come back, beat the shit out of Brainiac, and then recover fully. Missing frontal love? Lol, don't need it!

Oh dear, Aquaman just can't get a break.

Eh, I don't blame people, really. It's not so much that Aquaman is unpopular, it's the way DC seems convinced that they can make people think otherwise. There's plenty of characters that people actually like, but they will make more Aquaman and this time people will think he's awesome.

Aquaman is fucking awesome!

Why do you think crime DOESN'T happen in the sea at all? This is a world of super mutants, alien species and underground mole societies.

Aquaman is regulating the oceans hardcore. Demanding tithes of slaves from all the subjugated ocean crime syndicates.

The very idea that Aquaman is lame is simply OUTRAGEOUS!

Assuming it's the Batman: The Brave and the Bold incarnation, that is.

You realise that he can command all creatures of the sea?

Including the one that sleeps in R'lyeh?

"Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn"

Also: according to McAfee, I've linked malware to the forum. Why do we take this bath-salt snorting guy seriously anymore?

Damn, Toxic Avenger doesn't even make the list.

I'm kind of surprised considering how often porn is exploited for malware etc, would have thought the ladies of comics would top this but apparently aquaman is that much of a stud.

Come on Escapist I thought you were better than Aquaman bashing. He's a pretty cool dude and can control zombie sharks, can you do that? No. Also he doesn't talk to fish, he controls them with his mind! Can't we hate a different superhero instead.

If you watched that video with Mcafee, you would realise he has sweet FA to do with the company any more. Hasn't done for a long time.

I'm pretty sure that Entourage is/was pretty popular...so maybe that helps?

Because if you're a fan of Aquaman you're probably too stupid to recognize the tell-tale signs of a phishing attempt.

I'm utterly surprised Wonder Woman and other aren't superheroes on that list. Usally, porn and malware are a nice mix.

Andy Chalk:

*pulls out rolled-up newspaper* No, bad Andy Chalk! *smacks head* Bad! Go sit in the corner!

To even IMPLY that Namor is better than Aquaman... heresy!

Hell, it's even been CONFIRMED that Aquaman would kick his ass... by crushing him with a fucking killer whale.

So the only reason its still called McAfee is due to brand recognition?

Thats good to know.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that searching for Aquaman would lead to Phishing.

Poor Aquaman, you basically have a Great Old One as a pet and people still make fun of you.

If anything Spider-man should be at the top of the list! >:(

So wait, did you managed to watch his 'I have nothing to do with your damn antivirus, I don't even like the program they have made, so stop bugging me about it so I can get back to my strippers and bath-salts'... and miss the central message? XD

or did you just not watch it?

As for the article, I guess Aquaman just has less legit sites to bump down the scam sites. Poor aquaman.

((side note: this is the first time i've heard 'toxic' used in an internet context, that wasn't about League of Legends))

I'm surprised the majority conclusion for this trend is that Aquaman is more toxic because he has less legit fan sites, and not that he's more toxic because a man who lives among fish, armed with a triple-headed phallic weapon, is clearly the most likely to spawn tidal waves of obviously suspect fetish porn on the internet.

For some reason I'm kinda surprised at that, and I have no idea why.

Then again they probably did that for those poor bastards that want to know why we pick on Aquaman so much.

Then it's a good thing that he's not named Seaman, huh? :D

...

...

That was terrible, I will see myself out. The door is over there, right?

The only reason Aquaman still is kept around is so Mera can have a reason to be in the stories. Without Aquaman, she's just an Atlantean warrior queen who also was a Red Lantern for a bit. Oh, wait...

Hah Deadpool is awesome, AND the one thing he wont kill is your computer!

Personally I really like Aquaman, the new 52 Aquaman is probebly tied with Flash for the best after the reboot. But Im guessing one of the things that people are looking for judging by the searches there are copies of the good awfull Aquaman pilot that was made as some sort of spinoff to smallville that thankfully never made it anywhere. Im guessing people hear about it word of mouth and wonder what its like.

Seeing as how its pretty unlikely ever to get a real release or ever to be shown on TV again, people try to find it online, and get their computers busted in the process.

Actually, Aquaman's comic is a best seller right now that repeatedly beats everything not Batman, X-Men or Green Lantern related so obviously he has a very large fanbase.

Heh, I guess it worked then.

Wait, there's comics not Batman, X-Men or Green Lantern related?
