Firefly Online Coming Next Summer To Your Tablet

First you'll need a crew. Well, first you'll need an iOS or Android device; then you'll need a crew.

San Diego Comic Con is a place of wonder, delight, and announcements of all sorts. This latest from San Diego should please those with brown coats in their closets: Firefly Online, an online RPG set in Joss Whedon's cancelled-before-its-time science fiction cowboy universe, is due next summer. It's only coming to smartphones and tablets, great news if you're an Android or iOS fan; "we'll see how things go" is all the developer is prepared to say, when asked if it plans to port the game to PC.

This one's being cobbled together out of spare parts and dodgy port compressor coils by QMx and Spark Plug Games. "At QMx, we know firsthand how great and powerful a franchise Firefly is and how mighty the Browncoats are," says Andy Gore of QMx. "The idea of creating an interactive experience where fans can have their own Firefly adventures - well, that's just too shiny for words." The trailer doesn't give too much away, but it's safe to say you'll be misbehaving with your newly hired crew in your specially created ship all over the 'verse, both in space and planet-side.

"Hey, we couldn't be doing this without the Browncoats and the Firefly community that continues to rock hard core," said a community spokesman in response to an enthusiastic YouTube comment. "We're doing it for our fellow Browncoats of the world so seriously - thank *you*." Want to know more? There's a website over here you should maybe have a look at.

iOs or smartphone... Sounds like a micro-transaction driven facebook game. I'm not horribly exited about this.

From the trailer and the fact this is on iOS, i really hope this isn't just a clone of Galaxy on Fire 2.

I can really see it being a space simulator in that regard because it matches the 'ship for hire' mentality of Firefly. I hope they handle the IP well and produce an interesting game worthy of holding the Firefly name given the strength in the name itself to have such a loyal fan base (myself included) from 11 episodes and a movie.

the website seems to be unavailable, I hope that's because of demand killing the site (see fox the series was fucken awesome and you were idiots to drop it)

Actually it may be loading, but very slowly, so yeah it's being swamped lol

I want to be excited...I do. I've seen every episode well over a dozen times (I still have a dvd from the show inside my disk drive, been there for months) but the chances of this being a free-to-play or somehow microtransaction based game could be pretty high.

Someone just mod Star Citizen when it's out and give it a Firefly skin. I will give you all the moneys if you do that.

"A Firefly game..."

YES!

"...on Android and iOS!"

FUCK!

Perfectly sums up my thoughts.

Or you could just play a Firefly mod of FTL ...

I was excited until I saw it was for the tablet.

You know what would be way more awesome?

A decent Firefly-mod for Freelancer.

I don't know about Freelancer, but I would not be surprised to see someone make such a mod for the upcoming Star Citizen. As for this game... I'd like to say I'll wait and see, but I already know I'd buy just about any official Firefly product just to help show that the interest is still there.

Speaking of interest, the game's website seems to be getting hammered pretty bad right now.

It's the same for me, Freelancer was the only game that I could think off that's out and proven to be moddable enough to make this possible (there are full Star Wars conversions, and even a Halo one for that) - though on second thought there are a few games out there that would allow that if the effort is put in (X3, for example). In the end though, it doesn't matter - ANYTHING to bring the Firefly Universe to life again would be great. Even this mobile project has some merit, I'm only scared that it will fail horribly because they misjudged their target demographic, leading into another period where no one wants to touch Firefly with a ten-foot pole...

Normally, I'd be excited... but I don't have an Android or Ios... so I'm probably screwed in that regard...

For anyone struggling to get the website to load, here's the "About the game" section:

Firefly Online is a social role playing game (RPG) based on Firefly, Joss Whedon's cult-hit television series. Firefly Online (FFO) is currently in development for iOS and Android, and may expand to include additional platforms.

In Firefly Online, players assume the role of a ship captain as they hire a crew and seek out adventures, all the while trading with and competing against the millions of other players to try to survive in the Verse: find a crew, find a job, keep flying.

FFO provides a variety of gameplay activities and systems so that players can fully experience life in the Verse.

- Assume the role of a ship captain - create a crew and customize a ship
- Aim to misbehave in space and planet-side adventures
- Cross-platform player experience across devices (pick-up and play from anywhere)
- Unique social features connecting Firefly fans
- Create a shiny ship and explore the Verse

I do not feel very positive about the incredibly vague description and use of the word "social". I suspect I won't be bothering with this.

So is this Firefly in name only? If you cant have Jane and Mal etc on your ship then whats the point?

It ain't easy being a Firefly fan...

Another lame IOS game trying to cash in on the name only.

Where is the internet flash mob for this? One the strength of which made XCom: Enemy Unknown happen, and made it such a hit that the original reboot is now considered the spinoff when XCom: Enemy Unknown was originally under that title.

Finally something that may become a decent game for my Google Nexus (Because I actually have many uses for a tablet including gaming and welcome it =)).

let's hope this works out well and then if it gets a PC release people can bitch and whine all they want.

Tablet?! The fuck is this?
I don't want to prejudge it because it could be good and made with care and love for the source material, but immediately my "this is a money-grab meant to cash in on an old franchise many years later, set in this universe for no reason other than that it is a recognizable franchise among a lot of gamers"-sensors are going off.
Plus, I don't have a tablet. Only a smartphone.
Well, we'll see.

+1 So fucking disappointed!

May not be a mod but you know that someone will design a Firefly-Class (or very similar) freighter to be sold in game as custom designs can be vetted and put into the game.

I had about the same reaction. It wouldn't have been as bad if it were going to released for PC, but it's not.

Certainly nothing that truly resembles Serenity would get official approval because that would invite lawsuits from Fox. On the other hand, there will be private servers, and Chris already said that the game will be moddable, so I would not be the least bit surprised to eventually see some servers set in The Verse with various ships seen in the series available.

No, but I reckon I can get pretty close to the general design concept without infringing on the IP. Two side mounted rotating engines with one or two larger one in the back, aft cargo hold with crew quarters and cockpit to the stern. Less rounded and more angular, weapons slots and maybe (and I'm crazy for thinking of this) a fighter craft dock on the underbelly of the ship for protection in space, just undock prior to landing and it saves on fuel costs for an escort.

There should be a statute of limitations on how long you can beat this dead horse. The show was great, the movie was awesome, SOME of the graphic novels were good, and yet we still get crap like this.

Joss is still "oh I had plans for this IP, and I would really love to be able to revisit it, but I'm too busy counting my Marvel loot to bother trololol."

That may or may not be a direct quote.

I haven't seen the fan made movies, but much like Capcom's relationship with Mega Man I find it tiresome that we need rely upon fans to keep these popular franchises alive.

ah, somone decided to ride of the fandom of firefly and expect to get profit just by sheer amount of hype around firefly.

In interviews Joss has said that if he were to be given unlimited budget and free reign what he would most want to do is either a musical or space drama. So far he has been excelent in making both and more. its a wonder how long it took the big wings to even notice him, for he is one of the best directors we ever had in filming industry anyway.

Take my love, take my hand, take me to the promised land....
Come on baby, watch and see, they won't take the sky from me-e....
Custom servers for Firefly online, eh? I'm calling mine "Vera"
That took me about 24 hours to post, thanks a lot AT&T

*AHEM*
On a more serious note, if an Android version exists, then it stands to reason that they can port the game to Linux, which means they can port it to Windows.
Likewise, if there's an iOS version, it stands to reason that they could port THAT version to Mac
