Wonderful 101 Intro Seems Appropriately Heroic

Platinum Games has served up new footage of The Wonderful 101 which includes the game's superheroic introduction.

The Wonderful 101 is what developer Platinum Games describes as a "mass-hero action" game. Put plainly, that means the game gives players control of a squad of superheroes who are then free to protect average citizens from whatever threats that might appear. Like, say, a train barrelling toward a school full of adorable, likely precocious children.

That description, while intriguing, wouldn't be enough to entirely sell us on the Wii U-exclusive Wonderful 101, but since this is yet another Platinum Games joint, we're contractually obligated to be excited. Bayonetta stands as one of the most creative, engaging action games ever created, and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was the most gleefully entertaining exploration of Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear universe since that time Solid Snake fought a cave demon. Point being: Platinum makes games that other developers either won't or simply can't, and even when flawed they always offer at least a few hours of glorious spectacle. Based purely on this intro footage, that looks to be a trend that Wonderful 101 will continue.

The Wonderful 101 is currently scheduled to debut on the Wii U on September 15, 2013.

Awwww yeah, GOTY :D

So hyped for this game, nobody does it like Platinum.

It's worth pointing out that Nintendo Of Europe have got a pretty sweet deal in place for this game. If you download Pikmin 3 off the eShop, you get 30% off the price of W101. If you couple that with the Nintendo Network Premium where Wii U Deluxe owners can get eShop vouchers for purchasing games online (such as, say... Pikmin 3), that amounts to something like a 40% discount off W101.

Seriously people. It's one of the most creative looking games the industry has seen in years, and Nintendo is letting us get it for 30-40% off. If this game doesn't sell, then I give up. I really, really do.

Platinum Hype!

As you may be able to tell from my avatar, and that statement, I'm rather excited about this. :D

Bring on September 15th!

Daystar, congratulations. You were getting Pikmin 3 already weren't you? Get the eShop version, and you get W101 for 30% off. Spread the word. A deal this good should be getting shouted from the rooftops.

How much are prices on the e-shop? Because I get WiiU games for like 32 anyway :D

There is only one thing that can be said in the face of such epic-ness

I juat might get a WiiU for this game. I f*cking love Super-Heroes!

Ah, fair enough then. eShop is usually pretty close to standard RRP, though I think someone did the maths and worked out if both games come out at 39.99, this deal would equate to somwhere around 57 (though I think that's with the Premium discount as well). I'll have to check the numbers myself.

Either way, it's still pretty cool that Nintendo themselves are running a deal like this, especially coming off the back of that ludicrous deal they did a few months back with 3DS games. Hope it gets the game the attention it deserves.

Ah, but you forget jeffers, this game has the Clover/Platinum curse. So it'll be brilliant for those of us that play it. All 5 of us.

Make that 6 my friend as I've supported Clover by buying their games in the past. Hell I got a bunch of people into other Clover games too. ^.^

OT: I'd of bought a Wii U this month, but sadly I couldn't because I have to give my parents money...again...>.>

That was fantastic, this is a "game" through and through. God bless Platinum :)

This looks strangely appealing but that voice acting..... it ruins everything!

Kinda reminds me of Viewtiful Joe.

Exactly what I was going to say, probably that he's a big headed red super hero with a pink scarf, also Platinum was formed by people that used to work at Clover, right?

... why are people so interested for this game? It... doesn't seem that good...

Am I missing something?

People are interested in it because they think it's interesting.

That's pretty much it.

It's a game where you play as a superhero who leads a group of superheroes and transforms them into giant weapons in order to beat the snot out of a gang of alien dragon robot invaders. It's directed by the guy who created Devil May Cry, Okami and Viewtiful Joe. It looks to combine the sublime combat of Bayonetta with some of the strategy elements of Pikmin. And it's got this:

Why the hell wouldn't you be interested in a game where you can bitchslap robot alien dragons into skyscrapers? It's like The Avengers on crack!

Actually, from the 20 minute intro video IGN put up, the voice acting actually looks really strong, in that it sets out to capture that Saturday Morning Cartoon vibe, and really nails it. Also, they have their own theme song that gets sung in the background. And Dante is now a blue-coat wearing superhero with a Valiantium sword, apparently.

And this is being developed by many of the same dudes formerly from Capcom who made Viewtiful Joe. They even reference it in the opening.

I swear, I think that's Gideon Emery narrating (i.e. Gaius from Fire Emblem: Awakening and Sam in Vanquish). Looks sweet so far.

At first I had little interest in this game, but every new promotional trailer, demo etc. making me more excited for it. I say, bring it on already!!!

Sadly I won't be picking up this game until the holidays. I have Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn in August, Rayman: Legends in September, Pokemon X/Y in October, and the new Legend of Zelda: A Link between Two Worlds in November :(

Yeah, I'm not seeing myself ever wanting to play this. Even less so because it's only on the Wii-U, which I have no intentions of ever getting.

j-e-f-f-e-r-s:

Holy crap! Yeah, that's all I needed to see. A game that takes itself half-serious and has a ton of awesome action like that will be a nice change of pace for me.

I hate to be that "shoulda rolled" guy, but man, the dude playing the game had absolutely no idea what he was doing, did he? I mean, it's nice to see that spectacular intro and everything, but the parts where he stopped for five minutes and failed like three and four times in a row really aggravated me. Oh well, I guess we're all entitled to a few mistakes~

Anyway, yes, I previously didn't really care about it, but now I really really want it.

Everything about this game so far is so full of win!
Made by the guy behind Okami, Viewtiful Joe, etc. Viewtiful Joe meets Pikmin kind of gameplay. Power Rangers costumes and script.
I can't not buy this... Now if it only had megazords...

Just in case this wasn't a good enough reason to buy a Wii U, then you might be pleased to know that, as of yesterday, Earthbound is now for sale on the Wii U's Virtual Console. Don't believe me? Just ask IGN!
