Neil deGrasse Tyson's Cosmos Arrives in 2014
The first trailer for Neil deGrasse Tyson's take on Carl Sagan's Cosmos has been unveiled at Comic-Con.
Neil deGrasse Tyson is the coolest astrophysicist on the planet. But the planet's not big enough for a man of his stature, so he found himself a spaceship and he took it out... into the Cosmos!
Cosmos, for those not in the know, was a 13-part television documentary hosted by Carl Sagan that ran in the early 80s. Known in full as Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, it enjoyed both popular and critical acclaim, taking home an Emmy and a Peabody Award. Sagan, sadly, is no longer with us, but in 2011 it was announced that his show would return with Tyson at the helm.
The trailer doesn't really show it, but Tyson is an ideal replacement for Sagan. He's very media-savvy and has a talent for making complex ideas accessible, and is also an unflagging and very effective supporter of increased scientific endeavor. He demonstrated his knack for making a point with both clarity and flair in 2012 when he told the United States Senate Science Committee, "Right now, NASA's annual budget is half a penny on your tax dollar. For twice that - a penny on a dollar - we can transform the country from a sullen, dispirited nation, weary of economic struggle, to one where it has reclaimed its 20th century birthright to dream of tomorrow."
The 13-part Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey will air on Fox in 2014.

I can't wait for this. I love Neil deGrasse Tyson.
I can't wait for this show. The original is the greatest documentary series I have ever seen, and still holds up decades after it was made. If this series is even half as good...
I'm intrigued by the animated segments too. They look interesting. Maybe a different way of presenting the historical segments of the show rather than actors in costume?
i can only hope, for all our sakes, that it perhaps becomes its one small step in America falling out of love with stupid...
Hmm... between this and "Agents of Shield", I may be persuaded to watch television again.
Good work, Television. Now go and persuade the public into voting in public officials who'll make public space colonies affordable in my lifetime.
I'm just...so happy...
The original Cosmos is what first got me interested in science (and now I'm in grad school). If this series is as engaging and uncompromising with the truth as Tyson himself, it will be a wonderful influence on society (America, pay attention).
Welp. This has the potential to make me deliriously happy. I hope it does.
I with you on that one...
But, in full seriousness, the return of Cosmos with someone I like just as much as Carl Sagan... This is like a dream I never had coming true before my very eyes...
I got some Carl Sagan's Cosmos to re-watch...
I'll start off with these first: "If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch... you must first... invent the univere..."
"We are all connected... to each other, biologically... to the earth, chemically... to the rest of the universe atomically..."
I just heard about this a few days ago when watching an episode of MovieBob's The Big Picture about The Flinstones. He mentioned that Seth MacFarlane both owned the rights and wanted to do a new series for The Flinstones, but he also wanted to do the same thing for Cosmos. I was more interested in the latter.
Anyway, I'm glad this thing is actually happening and not just one of those ideas that never shows up on a screen.
