Call of Duty Developer Gets Death Threats After New Patch

cod blops 2 firefight

Call of Duty players are a notoriously aggressive lot, but backlash towards the latest Black Ops patch has officially crossed the line.

Treyarch design director David Vonderhaar recently took to Twitter to talk about the latest patch for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, which modified three guns to be less powerful. While there was some rational discussion, Vonderhaar quickly found his Twitter feed flooded with hateful backlash including threats of violence towards him and his family. The anger began when he tweeted such inflammatory remarks as "The DSR fire time was 0.2 seconds. It's now 0.4 seconds. The rechamber time was 1.0 seconds. It's now 1.1 seconds."

As the threats rolled in, Vonderhaar attempted to bring things into perspective for those bullying his account.

Activision community manager Dan Amrich stepped in to defend Vonderhaar. "[Vonderhaar] often gets told he should die in a fire or kill himself or is a horrible person," Amrich writes. "If anybody thinks for a second that this is okay, it is not. But if the loudest voices in the Call of Duty 'community' act like an angry mob instead, guess how the entire world views Call of Duty? Now consider that these Internet Tough Guy rants and demands are not unique to COD, but exist everywhere, in many gaming communities. This is why the world often does not take gaming seriously; this is why gamers are assumed to be immature, whiny assholes. Because the immature, whiny assholes are louder."

Amrich goes on to thank those who submitted reasonable feedback about the changes, and commends Vonderhaar for his patience. "If you enjoy your games, have a little respect for the people who make them - and stop threatening them with bodily harm every time they do their job."

I'm one of the most absurdly pro free speech people ever, to the point of being offensive, but he's right. This really isn't ok.

Just when you think people can't take CoD too seriously, the make a minor balance change to a game that isn't especially balanced in the first place.

The thing is, even though sports have people who get even more insane than gamers, sports fans already had a time when they were somewhat respectable, so people KNOW the crazy idiots are the minority. Gotta get the bedrock in place AND THEN go nuts with the immaturity.

Wait....what?

No just...what?

It's a GAME, there is not good reason to threaten someone over nerfs let alone ones that are in the less than a second catagory.

I have seen almost as bad in World of Tanks. Replace tough guys with arm-chair xenophobe/racist general and you get the idea :( . This happens all over the gaming community. Not saying that it should happen though, Dan Amrich is kinda correct.

Video games are SERIOUS BUSINESS!

Nothing really new, this is the internet being the internet.

Captcha: orange juice

Why yes, I think I'll go have some. Something to cool all this seething rage.

Wow... I just finally got my 360 fixed, and have yet to start playing Blops 2 again (need Gold first) but... now im not sure I want to be associated with this shit... I mean seriously... We're going to kill someone over fractions of a second? The Fuck!?

Wow, these people need an angry dome or something. The problem with instant messaging everyone: No time to think about what you're saying before you frickin say it.

well, when you appeal to a certain crowd for years.... -_-

granted, i've gotten enough death threats through jobs/internet that i don't even bat an eye anymore, but really, if i was a seller of steroids to huge fuckheads, and i got upset that there were dude bro's fighting in front of the shop, i'd expect to be called a fucking idiot for not seeing that coming.

i do agree that it shouldn't be common place for that to happen, hopefully the dumbshits who do this got suspended or something off the games for a while.

Now, the question remains: of these threats, how many were made by people who have yet to hit puberty?

I would of been happy if they were able to ban the people making such comments. The games would be better off without people like that.

That type of community is one of the reasons I stopped playing those games.

*Sigh* how come the most obnoxious immature ones make the most noise?

Because they are the ones who don't know any better, and because they are the ones that attract the most attention, we all get painted with their brush

Exactly what I was thinking. People are told to kill themselves/threatened all the time for things less "important" than this. Dunno why it's more important if it's a game dev instead of some furry or neckbeard being threatened.

I think that the CoD community may be too far gone for ANYTHING to work at pulling this kind of stuff back. I mean GabeN and the Riot devs don't even get death threats from the notorious MOBA community.

Changes involving fractions of a second made to make-believe guns in a video game rate death threats, now?

These people must have their heads so far up their asses that they can see out their own nostrils.

You have NO IDEA how much I would love to see that. "You want something to get upset about?" BANHAMMER

And seriously, considering the guy who faced eight years of jail for one dumb comment in League of Legends, you'd think these rageheads would think twice before tossing off death threats.

How dare they try to balance COD and make the game A fair challenge for everyone, Noobs or not! HOW DARE THEY!!!

I sure hope they called his mom fat, that'll show him.

Sigh...

And you guys are doing so much to change people's opinions about video games and gamers themselves.

This is like Michael Bay claiming he doesn't like that people turn off their brains and just watch the pretty explosions in the films he makes. Of course he doesn't, he relies on it. Those twitchy, aggressive bastards, while not necessarily the majority of CoD players, definitely make up a large percentage.

erttheking:
*Sigh* how come the most obnoxious immature ones make the most noise?

They need to get noticed somehow in this world that would normally ignore them and label them as idiots. Sadly the idiots and extroverts are always the loudest. >.>

OT: Sadly this doesn't phase me as I've gotten a few death threats over the years from CoD fans, hell I get some from time to time when people PM me about my LPs. It's kinda funny how butt hurt some people can get about things, forgetting that it's a VIDEO GAME and that they are acting childish. Oh how I wish the Banhammer would bring swift justice to them, maybe then I'd try another CoD game since I'd be able to play it with my friends. :D

THANK YOU. ON SO MANY LEVELS.

Death threats should never be okay, even in a free society.

If it makes you feel any better, a lot of the butthurt folks are threatening to leave and go back to Modern Warfare 3. To which I say: I can't wait for my finger to get better and play in the new, improved Blops 2 community!

Are you kidding? Optional texture packs are.

And seriously, considering the guy who faced eight years of jail for one dumb comment in League of Legends, you'd think these rageheads would think twice before tossing off death threats.

I'm not sure they even think once, which is the problem both here and in the case of the kid who "threatened" to shoot up a school.

The correct response is to find the accounts of those who made the threats then just ban their accounts with ZERO chance of recovery.

Maybe convince them to give the account information by saying "We are sorry you feel this way. How does an experience boost or custom skin as compensation sound?" or whatever to convince them to give their ID away. Give them what you promised at first, then after a week hit the fuckers with a ban preventing them from playing all games associated with that account. If they try and kick a stink about it you've got cause to inform the police of their death threats.

...and that's how you police the internet.

This is the kind of audience that COD caters too. There are always those that are more vocal than others and those that think it is okay to take it to extremes. But the quotes above I agree with.

This is what people think about when they think of gamers, of course COD being one or the most sold game means it represent a significant number so therefore the vocal minority represents gaming as a whole.

Thanks a lot you whiny pathetic douchebags for tainting the rest of the community.

Increasing reload time by a tenth of a second gets people sending death threats? Seriously? It's such a short period of time, I'm surprised anyone noticed.

These incessant little whiners aren't concerned about balance, because let's face it: there is no such thing as "balance" in twitch shooters like CoD. It's all about who's got the fastest fingers and the best hardware.

Nah, the kinds of people that make death threats over inconsequential changes in a video game have compulsion issues and are best steered clear of, on the internet and in real life.

He's definitely right about this being far too common. Hard to believe people can wind themselves up so much over a video game they like to play sometimes. This makes the idea of gamers feeling too entitled look warm and fuzzy by comparison.

Not sure how to interpret the behaviour really without saying duh codblops or something equally retarded. It's obvious things like Twitter give people an inflated sense of their own importance and influence. Being able to sit at a keyboard comfortably may have something to do with the power trip. Though for some reason these people are actually threatening the guys making their games with physical harm... It's almost like even they want them to stop making COD games.

At least this stuff is so obviously retarded and (hopefully) empty it can be ignored in some equal level of comfort. Too bad about the rest of Twitter... Don't even get me started on all the others... Not to mention all those internet forums filled with opinionated morons you can never seem to avoid... err I mean wonderful people I can't get enough of. Honest.

And this is why I have no fucking interest in buying any of the COD franchise.
I'm subscribed to Troller's Youtube channel, name of Soprano Pictures, who pretends to either be a man with down syndrome or a squeaky six-year old and proceeds to wind people up on COD. Now, what happens most of the time on his videos is that the other players on the channel start to bully him and abuse him (while he says the most hilarious things back), saying the most vile, vicious and disgusting things to him, completely taking the piss of who they think is an intellectually disabled person or a small child. I don't want to be part of that kind of community. I don't want to play with people who say the most horrific things to random people on the internet just because they think they can get away with it.

For the record, since everyone's probably questioning why the hell anyone would find it funny to watch a intellectually disabled person (or someone pretending to be one) being bullied online, he usually ends his episodes by revealing himself and inviting them to watch themselves on his channel. Though even then, that usually only causes said assholes to abuse him even more...

Oh my god, this, a thousand fucking times this. This type of vile drivel coming from these aggressive MORONS, being sent straight to the bloody DEVELOPERS, really should be enough reason to pull out the Banhammer if some poor bastard gets jail time for saying something stupid in an anonymous game/facebook post.

Edit: Stop me if I'm on the wrong track, guys, but wasn't part of this patch designed to lower the firing speed of two snipers rifles? You know, weapons that aren't supposed to be used run-and-gun style like automatic rifles?

Really, if I was the company, I would have just changed it and not said a word.

I wouldn't go that far. I can think of instances where death threats are appropriate. However, NONE of them have anything to do with entertainment industry: I.E. the stuff people are supposed to do for fun.

Probably some screaming 12 year old CoD-tard.

The only thing I really know about this game is this meme. Threats from obnoxious children are petty & empty, unless they know where you live & it's within biking distance from their house.

i bet they were xbox players.
ok, bad joke.

But, but, but, then COD servers would be empty and you would have to play with bots....

Also, no, keep them in COD. if you ban them they may start spilling out into other games. why do you hate other games so much?

Huh. An Activision exec actually hit the nail exactly on the head. Well said.

It's obviously a tiny, tiny minority of players who are making these threats, but it's still hard to believe people could get that wound up over changes that are so insignificant. I mean, it's a game. You're playing it to have fun. If you're getting this angry about it, you should probably do something else.

Well yeah, he's right. People should not be getting death threats at any point - but over something as trivial as a 0.1 second difference in reload times? Fucking ridiculous.

Unfortunately, since the whiny assholes are quite pervasive in pretty much every gaming community, this definitely isn't exclusive to CoD, by any stretch of the imagination.

erttheking:
*Sigh* how come the most obnoxious immature ones make the most noise?

Because the mature gamers are content to bury their heads in the sand and give bullshit excuses like "This is the Internet" or "Free Speech hurr durr"

Instead of taking the route of being louder by shouting "SHUT UP" to these obnoxious asswipes.
