Phasmal:

Well when ya receive the `fake geek` shit for showing your nerd in public like so many ladies do, it kinda teaches you to... not.
You can't risk revealing the secret identity.

I buy most of my games online, don't talk too much about my hobbies unless I've gotten to know the person.
Honestly, a lot of us don't want to be found. :P
Can you blame us?

YUP
I can blame you.
If you dont show yourselves then when you are discovered you will always be an oddity, which some may feel the need to test for authenticity. However I do appreciate that there is no Geek girl central command and that a coordinated mass effort would be impossible :p

To be honest with you I dont really know what people even mean by the term geek. Its kind of a blanket term for someone who likes films, games, comics and other similar stuff or a combination of them all. I myself wouldn't test a girl if she said she was a geek, but I would ask what she likes to see why they make her a Geek, same with men really. I think most lads these days would just be happy to know women share their interests, rather than quiz them in order to bar them entry to the 'club'.

If you lot as are as geeky as you claim. I see no reason why you would object to being quizzed in a pleasant light hearted manner. If someone asked me a difficult question like what does the end boss of Final Fantasy 4 look like? or in Marvel comics which villains real name is Max Eisenhardt (clue its an X-men character)? Then I would have a go. I'd be happy to talk about that sort of thing. If I couldn't get any right I'd just pose a counter question of equal obscurity, to prove that theres more to Geekdom than my interrogator has experienced.

Well, sorry you feel that way. More and more women are coming around anyway, so we are less of an oddity, but if anything, the Inquisition is louder than ever for me. Probably BECAUSE of the new female interest.

Yes, geek is a blanket term.

And I don't object to talking in a lighthearted manner. But it's never in a lighthearted manner. It's in a semi-hostile `you're just faking it` manner. And you do tolerate it, at first.
Until it gets annoying.
And you look around at all your guy friends getting an instant pass. Your less nerdy friends, your less skilled friends. Just cause they're guys. Fuck that.
Some guy wants to judge me, I'm judging him right the fuck back for being so insecure.

Lunar Templar:
I will never understand why this is a thing at all.

Neither will I...neither will I. I mean, in all honestly, people faking something to be popular or "in" isn't really anything new...or even interesting for that matter. Why the world latched onto girls and their questionable love for all things "geek" related, I will never know.

It just seems like another pointless thing people spend too much time complaining about.

I always thought i was a geek when i was a kid but I was never all that smart just really into video games i can still wax lyrical about the good ol days of nes to ps2. The stupid crap i remember about so many games i played is crazy but that's all i got i'm not into anything else so i would assume i would get shunned too. Where are the geek communities?
As for gamer girls there everywhere and i like it.

I have just visited the geekgirl/tumblr and i must say some of the stories on there are quite depressing.

Ok, so they do exist. Why can I never bloody well find any of them?

Hmmm... yeah, like fair enough on the whole thing... it's not good for genuine "geek girls" if they have to put up with apprehensiveness and an air of impenetrability and suspicion due to the "fake geek girl" phenomenon... but obviously those can and do exist.

Isn't it thus fair for people to be on their guard if they feel they might be "used" (or whatever) and taken advantage of (or just deceived, w/e) if they trust people?

Hell, "geek culture" or whatever is elitist and unfriendly enough to begin with. You know, like how hard gamers are on people who claim to be gamers and view them with an air of suspicion and presume them to be "casuals" until they give them enough legitimate reasons to be risen to the status of "proper" gamer in their eyes.

I mean, no one would ever criticize women for being prejudiced and defensive towards men. Naturally, all men should be assumed to be rapists until proven otherwise and this is perfectly justifiable, understandable and not offensive at all.

Andy of Comix Inc:
Yes, but that it doesn't exist for men, too, is why it's worrying. Or is there "fake geek men" we have to watch out for, too? And if there are - why don't people gun for them, too? It's probably cos most of the people shouting out against "fake geek girls" are insecure little straight fellas, eh.

Yeah but in general for humans, men have and always have had to compete with other men a lot more than women have had to compete with other women. Hence why men have to work harder to attract significant amounts of female attention than vice versa.

And nobody ever worries that bad things affecting men don't exist for women too ;)

I wanted to finish the music video, but they really need to get some actual musicians to compose and perform the song next time. I just couldn't listen anymore.

I'm not sure why you are sorry but as I have said I have yet to meet any Geek women in Cardiff, its not an opinion I hold its just a fact I haven't met any.

But any way fank yoo for your insight.

I am going to go with there is no such thing as Fake geek girls at least in the context what "fake geek girls" are suppose to be. Reading through this thread only one person has been able to provide a story of a "fake geek girl" with is friend being taken advantage of, but in the context of the whole "fake geek girl" thing it is not an example of a "fake geek girl". The reason being is a "fake geek girl" is considered to be a woman who is not a geek pretending to be a geek for popularity reasons which the two women in that story were not doing. They were simply being con artists simply taken advantage of a guy who was a nerd. The rest of the evidence people have seemed to put forward have consisted of their being hot woman that show off their breasts online while playing games. Guess what that is not proof of those woman being fake "geeks". News flash just because the stereotypical geek/nerd is a socially awkward person does not mean all geeks/nerds are socially awkward. You can be a geek and be an attention seeking and/or exhibitionist person. Hell the Escapist had a video series about women that would be considered exhibitionist if you remember, staring some porn stars and strippers that were nerds.

Someone should put the phrase "There are no FAKE geeks only REAL jerks!" on a t-shirt.

I'm lucky to be the proud uncle to 6 girls who love comics, sci-fi, anime and videogames.
And I happily feed their habits!
