Square Enix Announces Final Fantasy Agito For Smartphones

Final Fantasy Type-0

The next Final Fantasy mobile game will be a "live" experience, according to Square Enix.

In an announcement published in this week's Famitsu, Square Enix revealed a free-to-play fantasy RPG, now with multiplayer and set in the world of a previous Final Fantasy game. Final Fantasy Agito is a smartphone game that begins in the same setting as Final Fantasy Type-0 where players began their journey at the Orience magic academy as a student. Agito players will begin their game in the same place as new player-customized characters.

"I wanted to write a story that traced the different fates of the FF Type-0 heroes," producer Hajime Tabata told Famitsu. The game will make use of the parallel cycles of Orience from Type-0. When one cycle ends, another one -- albeit a slightly different one -- begins. "The decision system here means that the game should change gradually with each cycle," Tabata added. "We might have different decisions for you to make at the second cycle, or more choices to select from."

Each cycle may have multiple chapters to it, but Tabata has not decided how many chapters to include in each cycle. He has said, however, that each chapter will last two weeks in real time. Tabata wants to make the game a "live" experience for players. The first 10 days of the chapter are for personal missions while the final four days are for team-play phases. To better challenge bosses as a team, it is important to boost skills during the individual phase.

Final Fantasy Type-0, originally called Final Fantasy Agito XIII, was meant for release on smartphones but was instead released for the PSP two years ago in Japan only. Final Fantasy Agito will debut this winter.

Something inside me just wants to say that this is really some excuse disguised as a game to live out the dev's schoolgirl fantasy... I dunno, maybe it has something to do with hearing about the whole thing with XIII-3 and Lightning's boobs, but within the last year Square has started to grasp for some very pathetic straws, and makes me wonder if who's really calling the shots around there isn't the CEO or possibly any known name.

The entire Fabula Nova Crystallis series has been a bust, IMHO. Final Fantasy XIII was somewhat likable, but the fact that the individual projects basically had to be cannibalized and rebuilt into something else entirely kind of makes me wonder what they were thinking.

Soooo this is a sequel to Type-0, or re-visioned Type-0? what are we exactly getting here. Type-0 never came out here so I don't know if the real-time thing was apart of it on not.

They were counting on FF fanboys and girls to swallow everything thrown at them because you know it's Final Fantasy :P

>FF13 gets entire trilogy, sells very well
>Type-0 gets a remaining
>Versus 13 becomes 15 and next gen
>FF15 going to get direct sequels
>FNC goes from one generation to two

>Mahorfeus thinks this is a "bust"

Dude, a bust would be something along the lines of the Irviance Alliance of FF12 or better yet FF14. If anything the Fabula Nova Crystallis series has EXPANDED beyond what the creators originally intended.

That's really beyond the point I was making. I never indicated that the series was not a success. In fact, Fabula Nova Crystallis, the Ivalice Alliance, and of course the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII all did fairly well. My point is that the primary games in the series were either delayed beyond reasonable belief, rebranded, or both.

All four games in the Ivalice Alliance were released within 2-3 years, and every single one of them was both a critical and commercial success.

>FF13 gets entire trilogy, sells very well

>FF13 splits fanbase even more drastically than FF7 did, becomes widely despised by most fans of older and newer Final Fantasy's alike

>Type-0 gets a remaining

>Type-0 never gets localized, despite looking extremely interesting to the Western audience

>Versus 13 becomes 15 and next gen

>Versus 13 drops involvement with and resemblance to Final Fantasy XIII

>FF15 going to get direct sequels

>FF15 is not related to the FNC series
EDIT: Okay, much like the rebranding of Agito XIII, they still have l'Cie. But the relevance is still minimal, as Final Fantasy games almost always have references like that to older titles.

>FNC goes from one generation to two

Citation needed, as unless they're continuing XIII on the PS4/Xbox One it should supposedly end with Lightning Returns

It's expanded because Square hasn't had a single clue about what they're doing with it. They were initially planning on XIII, Versus XIII, and Agito XIII. XIII ended up being a massive disappointment in the eyes of many people who had been following the Final Fantasy titles since the days of the NES/SNES/Playstation. So big of a disappointment that many don't care about and actively wish that Square hadn't turned XIII into a trilogy. That doesn't mean it doesn't have its fans, obviously; As you noted, the games have sold really well. But even the people who disagree about how overrated Final Fantasy VII is usually agree that they thought XIII stunk.

Meanwhile, Versus XIII was in development hell for the longest time (originally being announced back at the beginning of the PS3's lifespan) and has now been revealed to no longer be associated with XIII in any way. Definitely sounds like confidence in the brand to me.

At the same time, Agito XIII is also rebranded as Type-0 and, with the exception of the l'Cie, drops most association with XIII as well, and as previously stated has been refused localization for Europe or the US for going on two years now.

Square is bumbling around with this Fabula Nova Crystallis thing because they weren't expecting the response they got to Final Fantasy XIII. The only reason XIII became a trilogy is because Square wanted to try fixing the damage that was caused by XIII in the first place.

Seriously though, where's the English version of Type-0, Square?

EDIT: The whole connection between the FNC games is even more tenuous than main-series Final Fantasy games usually are. You could probably make the argument that IX started the whole thing, considering they seem perfectly willing to just associate the games by their themes.

Whenever news like this comes from Square Enix all I hear is blah blah, Smart Phones, blah blah, dress up Barbie Lightning, blah blah. lol

Seriously though, I just want my FF15 and KH3. If these games are good then Square will be back on the map for me. And after making me wait 8 years, nothing less than excellent from these two games will be tolerated!

Well, technically, FF15 is still using the mythology of FF13. That one Goddess from FF13 seems to play a part in FF15 seems to play a part in here, but that's where the similarities end.

I honestly don't know why FF13 got made into a trilogy. No one can deny that there are other FF games that were far more successful and loved by the fans than FF13, and most of them didn't even get a sequel or a remake (I'd love to see a remake of FF9 :P). I'm not saying that they needed one, but it's not like FF13 NEEDED a sequel either, it's ending didn't really scream cliffhanger or anything to me, it seemed complete.

But whatever, I know people liked the game, and that's their opinion they're welcome to it, but to me it was just a waste of time.

Yeah, that's why I made the other edit about how tenuous the connections are between the games.

Even if it does still use the same basic mythos, they've gone out of their way to disassociate the game with XIII, and in the eyes of many people XIII is synonymous with this whole Fabula Nova Crystallis mythology.

Final Fantasy games have long used similar themes and mythologies, anyway. I feel like it's a little disingenuous of Square Enix to just now try saying they're implementing some unified mythology to their newest games (yes, I know that XII was in the same world as Tactics and, intriguingly, Vagrant Story).

WELL, isn't that a big flip-off to those who were anticipating Type Zero..I mean, if anyone really still expected Square to put it out over here.
