Fox News Begins Two-Part Series Linking Games to Mass Murder

The news network harps on murder simulators like it's 1999.

Now that gaming has seeped into the masses by way of smartphones and Angry Birds, you'd think that the moral panic over video games has subsided. While that might be true, it's not going to stop people from trying to exploit remaining pockets of susceptibility anyways. Today's example comes courtesy of Fox News, who's started a two-part feature entitled "'Training simulation:' Mass killers often share obsession with violent video games".

If the headline didn't give it away, the article isn't exactly in favor of violence in gaming. Various people with fancy titles mention various headline mass murders with tenuous connections to popular games at the time. Doom, Mortal Kombat, and Grand Theft Auto all get time in the moral panic spotlight. Important factors like availability of guns and mental illness are forgotten in favor of lines like: "Three more recent killers... all were active video game players."

However, the article does end with Dr. Doug Gentile, who's quoted as being rather reasonable. "I think it's the wrong question -- whether there is a link between mass shootings and violent video game play... I understand people want to look for a culprit, but the truth of the matter is that there is never one cause." Clearly, Dr. Gentile isn't thinking about the children!

The second installment is supposed to explore the "ultrarealism" in modern games.

I can't say much that hasn't already been said, All I can say is,"Getting tired of you crap man."

I'm not touching this one, and neither should you. I don't care anymore. Let's ignore them together and play our violent video games. Let's not actually engage in a meaningful rebuttal of this meaningless crap.

Good thing I play Microsoft Flight Sim all the time. I think I'm ready to be a pilot.

To be honest, I'm really not shocked or angered or anything by this. It's like an overused meme by this point. No one cares unless they are new to the information.

One would think Fox would be a good standard to measure stupidity, but I think doing so lowers the bar too much.

That said, I don't think you should link their site. The last thing we want is to direct traffic towards them.

You know what? The only way we're going to get Fox News to shut up is if we get together, buy them out, and shut them down permanently. If we can do that, it would show just how tired we are of the sensationalist shit we have to deal with every day that comes from them and other news outlets.

Ooh! Ooh! Can we do the same to MSNBC? :D

Or... we could just ignore it. You know, like they don't want us to.

Wow it took them this long to react with this? I'm suprised really.

Fox News, an ongoing work of fiction. Tune in every day to see what wacky misadventures they get up to next.

Both my brother and I played violent video games a a kid.
We were also being subjected to horrific abuse by my father.
Neither my brother or I have turned out to be violent or lawbreakers.
Video games offered an escape from the abuse.
If my brother and I had not had an escape such as video games from the abuse neither one of us would have turned out so well.

Oh come on. They are really calling it that? If they want to shock people into believing their bullshit they should call it something like "'Murder Simulator': The Killing Games", or "'Murder Simulator': Jesus Says No!".

Why is it I get the feeling that they hate games because of games like Fallout and Bioshock?

aw dude. dont give them more ideas... they're just stupid enough to do it.

Fox news... are they even allowed to call themselves News or has the definition be broadened since I last took up a dictionary?

But I suppose this is the proof that video games are now considered an artform, after all all artforms have gone through this. D&D is satanism, ROck n Roll turns people into Hoodlums, Rap makes people wanna be gangster, The CHarlston is a sinful dance..anybook we don't like should be burned.

How about they put some real stats, like how the murder rate in the US has actually been going down for the last two decades.

It's ok, I'll just copyright those names and sue them if they use them. Muahahaha!

"Well, we lost a war with Syria, let's start one with videogames" -Fox News

It's reporting like this from Faux News that makes me want to go on a murder spree.

If I did, and because of the linking to me watching Faux News, it resulted in Faux News being canned would the loss of innocent life be a worthy sacrifice?

Remember guns don't kill people, video games kill people. wait that doesn't make any sense.

I can't tell if Fox News is going: "YOUNG PEOPLE LIKE SOMETHING. YOU SHOULD BE MAD."
or if they're doing a more traditional

Also, I bet 100% of the mass murderers have watched or been around someone that watched a yellow-journalism 'special'. Cable news kills babies.

well at least they're putting some effort into it, though the other news networks are saying the same thing. but Fox has a TWO-part series!!

oh well lol

Look another article proving Fox News is disconnected with reality.

If we ignore the trolls they will eventually go away. That's what i hope anyways.

I somehow doubt they care what we do. They're out to scapegoat us, but our input is otherwise completely unnecessary.

Fox News doing its part to try and blame computer games rather than the real enemy of contrails! :P

I hope ya'll know the metaphor.
On a slightly related note, I actually wrote an essay on why violent video games are not harmful for children for school. Got an A for it. I think I still have it saved as well.

I'm beginning to wonder how many people actually looked at the article before coming down and hating on it?
For what it's worth, it's not all that bad at all. There's a lot of editorializing, and Fox's position is quite clear with the sequence of quotes, but most of what's there is fact. To be a fair, a good amount of time is spent on admitting that there's no one answer, and that if there is a connection, it needs to be studied a lot more.

Except the fluoride CHEMICAL in the water mind controls you into forgetting about chem trails faking Obama's birth certificate.

Really? I'd like to see that, if it's ok to share it.

OT: Can Fox News-no, scratch that, the entire Fox network-just be shut down already? I legitimately don't understand why they're still around.

You know, I can't wait to see Fox News do an actual on-air interview with that rather somewhat reasonably same doctor. If only because its a true fact that Fox News will instead choose to exhume the corpse of one of these mass shooters who killed themselves and label them the defense for violent games. IF, and a major if at that, they do do an on air discussion with the doc, it'll consist solely of Fox's expert (most likely some no name chef) going "lalalalalala!" louder than the doctor can speak.

I didn't, but from what you said there, it's even worse than it sounded at first glance. They admit there's no real link, but then say VIDJYA GAYMS R EBUL anyway?

Creator002:
Good thing I play Microsoft Flight Sim all the time. I think I'm ready to be a pilot.

I forget: what sim/air combat game DID they try and blame 9/11 on?

I mean, I have trouble believing they'd let that gem just sail by.

erttheking:

That would require they 1. played them and 2 took the message.

They thought Mass Effect was a virtual rape simulator.

Remember guns don't kill people, video games kill people. wait that doesn't make any sense.

Guns don't kill people. Crazy people kill people. And video games kill people. With guns. But we don't want to restrict crazy people or video gamers from having guns.

I'd say "young people like something" is the older and more traditional.

I hear they all wore pants. Clearly, pants lead to murder!

Not as long as it's big money with another group. Say the scared old white people who are their demographic bread and butter.

Why must we even acknowledge a story like this. Fox lying to manufacture a story isn't news, and reporting on it gives it far more credit than it deserves.

Breaking news. Fox likes to crucify video games as a cheap attempt to boost ratings and score fake morality points with the "old people" and "ignorant" demographics. Story at eleven. I long for the day when such matters are regarded as so trivial as to not even warrant a response from the more civilized game playing masses.

Pretty much the best way to counter crap like this, in my opinion, is to just sit back and wait. Gaming is so mainstream that eventually all the people playing it now will grow up and introduce a new generation of youngsters to games. The previous generation will grow old and fade into the dark abyss of time itself. Just as our father who hated television before us, and our father's father who hated radio before him and our father's father's father who probably thought fancy pants book learning was a sign of the devil (something I do not doubt for an instant).

Eventually, we gamers will grow old and find something new to scapegoat for all of life's problems. Such is the way of things.

God, I am so SICK of this conspiracy theory bull! There is nothing to fear from fluoride!

...It's a distraction ploy by the reptile people. It's MILK you have to worry about! MILK keeps you from making the connection between reptiles, chemtrails, and Obama's secret Martian army!

WAKE UP, SHEEPLE!

...Wow. That was...Interesting. Did I write that?

That's certainly a good point. I still think it's a possibility though, I love Bioshock Infinite but it sure as Hell wasn't subtle. It even shows in the advertisements.
