Evo 2014 Announced, Switches To Xbox 360

The popular fighting game tournament started out using only arcade machines, then switched to the PS2 in 2004.

Evo is a fighting game tournament that is kind of a big deal in the gaming community. Hundreds of thousands of fans tune in, and big fighting game-related announcements are often made. Shoryuken, the lads behind the Evo tournament, have just announced the dates for 2014's Evo, along with a change that is sure to be quite controversial. This year, Evo will take place on July 11-13 at the LVH Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, and will be played with the Xbox 360 as the main platform, rather than PlayStation 3.

When EVO first started out, it was played almost exclusively on official arcade cabinets. The decision was made to switch to consoles in 2004 with the PlayStation 2, and since then, Sony's machines held the spotlight at the tournament.

The change to Xbox 360 is sure to be controversial to some, and it's unknown how this announcement will effect games that are currently exclusive to the PS3. The most likely reason for the change is the inconsistencies in performance the PS3 version of some games suffer, such as slowdowns in Marvel vs. Capcom 3 when there is a lot of activity on the screen, and the single-frame delay in the PS3 version of Street Fighter IV.

This year's tournament saw Nintendo fans fight for Super Smash Bros. Melee's inclusion, and went on to break streaming records despite Nintendo actively trying to block the stream. The Marvel vs Capcom 3 tournament saw the highest concurrent viewers, with over 140,000 fans tuning in to watch the livestream.

For more details, keep an eye on the official Evo website.

I do remember hearing that there was some minor lag on PS3 when Trophies were unlocked during matches.
Still, Not sure if it's a Hardware thing that caused the switch.

Wouldn't be surprised if it was a hardware issue as the PS3 has quite a bit of those from time to time. Although I think it's possibly more due to the fact that the 360 has a lot more fighting game peripherals for it than the PS3 does so it would be easier on that end I'd guess.

I imagine this only matters for cross-platform games, right? The new Blazblue is going to be a PS3 exclusive after all.

Ahhhhh...Yeah, that'd make sense.
Just wondering if it'd be worth the hassle to replace all the PS3 Consoles and Titles.

Yeah, I'd say that'd be the case, as the article said, they used actual arcade machines until 2004.
If it's a Tournament game, they'll find a way to play it.

Microsoft possibly made them a deal since this is a huge event that is really popular among a lot of people. Either that or the retailer they get them from was having a clear out sale since they have to make room for the Xbox Ones and the PS4s, along with the Xbox One designed Xbox 360 (which is utterly retarded if you ask me). XD

That could have happened too, though EVO is mostly showcasing the games rather than the consoles.
Still, I can imagine that they want to get their foot in the door for when Xbone comes out with the New Killer Instinct.

Just you would need to buy a bundle of them in order to fully accommodate the contestants, even small events like those Teamspooky cover have at least a dozen.

I am okay with this.

Traditionally with multiplatform games, the 360 versions tend to work slightly better.

Fappy:

Not especially as the PS3 has input delay that isn't present on the Xbox. So it is a bit more arcade perfect. In a perfect world, I want them to go back to arcade cabinets like they still use in Japanese tournaments.

Tournament organizers have already comfirmed that while the 360 will be the main console, games which are not available on the 360 will still be eligible for inclusion in the event. Basically, if it's a multi console game it will be played on the 360, if it's not, it will be played on it's native platform.

Personally, I'm not 100% sure why the change but I'd imagine it's got a lot to do with MS stepping up as a sponsor (including having the One and Killer Instinct as highly visible products there, with at least an invitational tournament for KI). There's really no major reason to do it otherwise unless MS is putting up some rather major cash (or Sony is stepping back on any support they had offered in previous years).

It's long been known that the 360 versions of Capcom's games in particular (most notably Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3) do run a slight bit better on the 360 so performance wise it shouldn't be a problem. I do see it as an issue for cash strapped tournament players though given that if they always play on a PS3 they may now have to either purchase a new joystick or deal with the issues assosciated with adapters.

EVO has been something I would normally like, but I don't. Mostly because games that should get included aren't (some for stupid reasons), and some that shouldn't do because Capcom or Namco or especially NetherRealm worked on them.

However, this change is probably a small one.

So salty! Butthurt about Injustice brah?

Kidding... I actually dislike injustice, especially those intractables, my big answer to it is just not watch it. Would actually like to see some skullgirls at evo, but it's not a big deal for me.

OT: Great news! Hate framedrops and now maybe we will see something sides freaking bonne wonderland.

Injustice over P4A or BB

MK9 over BB or GG

TTT2 over DoA5 (the superior 3D fighter)

SFxT (Jab Fighter x Timeout) getting any love at ALL

Lot of ones I'm a little upset about.

Is P4A an actual thing? I mean... will sound rude but always thought it was like Smash Brothers (not intended for tournaments).

And yeah... if I were Capcom would have paid not to show that mess of a game that SFxT turned out to be.

On the other hand EVO does have SF4, MvC3 and KoF XIII, so I can overlook anything else. And SF4 is about to get new balance!! So hype! It's time to get some practice on the hitbox.

P4A was built more for single-player, but its still an Aksys game, and a great one. Or they could have just used BlazBlue CS: Extend.

And I'm waiting for the balance notes as well for SF4. Juri needs some love.

Juri? I don't know, she is a bit boring to watch, I want to see Hakan and El Fuerte.

It is preposterous however that BB never made it to EVO, didn't knew P4A is Aksys.

Juri's boring to watch when players try and put a new style character into an old style box.

"Oh look, she has multiple holdable projectiles, let's sit in the back and spam them and make zero use out of her tremendous rushdown game."

She isn't Sagat, so they need to stop playing her like she is.

Anyway:

Need love: El Fuerte, Hakan, Juri, Dan, Yang, Chun-Li, Oni, Honda,

Need hate: Fei Long, Cammy, Ryu, Akuma, Zangief, Cody, Ibuki

Please. Ex Green Hand needs some invincibility knocked off, and he could stand to lose a little health or base damage. He doesn't need the nerf bat quite like Cammy does, but with Green Hand, he doesn't even have the "I have no gap closer" argument to fall back on.

What about Guilty Gear Xrd?

Zangief isn't exactly well-represented in the finals lately, what's his problem? Plus I read that EX Green Hand is super punishable on block, and I'm pretty sure that it's only +1 on hit.

And why does Cody need hate? He has a couple pretty easy links for combos, plus pretty good stun and damage, but he has absolutely no wake-up game, which means characters based around knockdowns get to go nuts.

Ryu is pure fundamentals, so that's gonna vary from person to person.

The other characters are admittedly more common than I'd like, but I love Akuma anyway.

I wonder why they don't simply run SSFIV on PC, even a super-budget-low-end one can run the game at a stable framerate with no dips. Input issues with arcade sticks perhaps? Dunno.

Lot of ones I'm a little upset about.

- Persona 4 Arena was played at EVO 2013.

- To be fair, I think Mortal Kombat probably should have had something
else substituted for it (my pick would have been Skullgirls) but
Netherrealms was a big sponsor this year, so...

- Why do you prefer DoA5 to TTT2? I haven't played DoA since the 2nd one,
so I'm curious.

- I'm sure Guilty Gear and Blazblue will be getting some love over the
next couple of years, with the new games coming out.

Although it will probably never happen, I'd love it if Divekick would somehow
become a main stage tournament, just to see people lose their shit over it.

People! People! How come I don't see any exitement about actual event in the comments?
EVO 2014! Get hyped!

It could also be because Sony recently announced that for the PS4 they would take legal action against anyone uploading videos to youTube. Sony has yet to clarify that statement made by an executive behind closed doors, but that would certainly scare away tournament broadcasters.

VMK:

Because EVO 2013 just passed and it's way too early to get hyped? That and because I guess there are about 10 fighting game fans in this forums.

1) Yeah, P4A got played, but the announcers saying it was a "dumb weaboo game" kinda irked me. At least show some respect.

2) Fair

3) DoA5 actually allows for attacking and defending in equal increments. You have to change up your combos and react to your opponent. TTT2 is like Marvel in that you tap your opponent once and knock off 70% of his life with floor, wall, and ground juggles. It allows no room for defense.

4) I hope so.

I concur. There's a whole host of upcoming new/standard tournaments to get excited for, such as Canada Cup, Shadowloo Showdown, Season's Beatings, and Winter Brawl. Given that Evo 2014 is still roughly a year out - and nobody knows what games are on the official schedule yet - it's gonna be a little difficult to get hyped, at least before January rolls around.

And like Tanakh just said, fighting game fans are a colossal minority here on the Escapist. Basically, take fans of action games (that are not Dark Souls, mind you), and multiply it by 0.25. There's your rough approximation as to how many fighting game fans there are on these forums.

Dare I say that the more "hardcore" players within the fighting game community, such as it is, are some of the more unforgiving and hateful folk of the gaming republic at large; you simply don't here about it as much because everyone likes to pretend it doesn't exist.

So of course stupid people are gonna say that P4A is a "stupid weeaboo fighter," if only because of the art style. Before that, people said the same shit about Blazblue. And before that, they even said the same shit about Guilty Gear, if you can believe that shit.

The front page of SRK is especially notorious for having an overabundance of salt flying around (no surprise there). When MK9 ended up winning damn near all the awards in existence (including a Golden fucking Joystick), people were furious. And I think they still are to this day.

In short, you can't fix stupid.

Plus the two largest attractions (that we can currently know will be there) have the issues of a new version of the game being out by then for SF4, and god only knows what kind of wackiness could pop up in UMVC3 in the next ten months, could be playing out the same way or everyone could have picked up teams with guaranteed guard breaks into touch of death on everything so the first person to put someone in blockstun is all that counts, hard to get hyped up when we have little idea how the biggest games will even be playing, and little idea of which other games will be there to begin with.

I'm an FGC fan, but it's a little early for that.
EVO is not until next July, I mean, it's like getting Hyped for Wrestlemania in May.

That and I kinda find that the FGC are largely made up of people who visited Arcades a lot back in the day so Mortal Kombat would be a name that'd mean a lot to them.
On top of that, they wouldn't drop something unless there was an extremely low turnout of players so until the FGC stops playing MK9...

Yeah, we have those. Fortunately we also have some of the best, more colorful commentators; I think this whole ditching the correctness and the small community size is what allow them to exist. Have you heard most commentators for DotA or SCII? Half of them are stiff and have no clue whatsoever what is happening in the game.

Still, a lot of the older FGC Members hung out in Arcades a lot, Miles923 comes to mind and I think that guy would be late 20s-early 30s, around the same age as most players.
On top of that, Even if you never played Mortal Kombat, you know Mortal Kombat, That brand recognition ain't fading any time soon.

One of the (few but great) advantages of living in Mexico City is that we actually have a lot of arcades still.
