Super Smash Bros. Teases Mario and Peach's Engagement

Super Smash Bros. Teases Mario and Peach's Engagement

Super Smash Bros Mario Princess Peach Engagement

Super Smash Bros.' website recently added a screenshot suggesting that Nintendo's premiere couple want to make things official.

Super Smash Bros. was always based on a silly premise, specifically that Nintendo's franchises share a single universe where characters fight each other in arena-based melee combat. It was an amusing thought experiment that generated Brawl's lengthy story campaign, but at the end of the day, everyone went back to their respective universes and the status quo returned to normal. Perhaps Nintendo is reconsidering that approach with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, as teased with an image on the game's official website. Assuming that this isn't just director Masahiro Sakurai playing around with Smash Bros.' screen grabs (and you're no fun if you think that), then what we're clearly seeing is Mario and Peach legitimizing a 28-year relationship filled with secret romance and Koopa kidnappings.

Okay, I'm sure there's some other reason for the ring to be there. Nintendo doesn't usually stray far from its canonical formulas, at least not with the bread-and-butter Mario franchise. The ring could easily be an in-game power-up, if not a practical joke, thrown on the main page without a second thought. Sakurai also teased "Who is the ring for?" on Miiverse, suggesting that one way or another, all is not as it seems.

That being said, the more I think about this, the more I hope it's a legitimate screenshot from Smash Bros.' story campaign. Picture it: After years of delaying the inevitable, Mario and Princess Peach finally announce their engagement and send wedding invitations across Nintendo's shared universe. When Bowser, Ganon, and Nintendo's major villains aren't invited, they launch an all-out invasion on the big day to destroy their assembled adversaries in one swoop. Meanwhile Luigi, Mario's long-suffering brother and best man, takes the opportunity to confess his own feelings for Peach, prompting a sibling brawl almost 30 years in the making.

Or, you know, it's just a randomly selected daily screenshot. Why make it something more than that?

o_o

I can't believe you're suggesting Luigi should break Daisy's heart.

Shame on you.

During said sibling rivalry Luigi will unlock his TRUE FORM FINAL SMASH: WEEGEE FORM!

Be afraid, Escapists. Be very afraid.

The big twist is that Daisy and Peach run off together, tired of how dull their lives have become, and Bowser and Mario realize they have so much history and so much in common that they become best buds and go into business together terrorizing Luigi from now on, and it's the canonical ending to the Super Mario games.

*in news reporters hat*
And now we go to Daisy, ruler of the Sarasaland, to hear her reactions to this rumor.
Princess Daisy, what do you think about the idea that Luigi had confessed his love to Princess Peach?
"

*camera moves over to Daisy*

"Hi, I'm Daisy~"

*camera moves back to me*
"Well there you have it folks, she's obviously delirious and can't think of anything to say about this rumor.
Now, let's get back to the studio, where our Sports Toad will fill you in on the next Mario Strikers games!"

Couldn't resist. XD

OT: Now to wait for the rest of the picture to be revealed and it turns out that Mario is so stunned by Peach's ring that Peach will Smash Attack him out of the arena. XD

Mmmm...Wonder if they are going to kill him (Like for Real)?

That's what happened with Superman, they were going to Marry him to Lois, then WHAM! Doomsday showed up.
Then again, Mario has lives...Hmmmm...

Wait what? I thought her real love was really Bowser and she was just stringing Mario along to cover her secret, forbidden romance.

I kid, obviously, but you can totally see it, right?

To be honest, Do Luigi and Daisy REALLY have that much chemistry? I don't thing I've seen them together in anything outside of party games.
Also, Luigi does tend to save Peach, if you choose to play as him in the games.

And I can just picture that Smash attack! :P

Well... you'd be hard pressed to find Daisy in anything outside of party games, since she hasn't been in anything else since her Super Mario Land (1989) debut. Except for the live-action movie, where its version of Daisy was very much Luigi's love interest.

But there's always this:

And this:

Super Mario Wiki:
Several spin-off games have indicated a friendly relationship between Luigi and Daisy. In Mario Tennis (Nintendo 64), Daisy is Luigi's default partner. In Mario Golf Toadstool Tour, they're seen golfing alongside Peach and Mario. Their team names from the Mario Party series include: "Steady Sweeties", "Tango Tanglers", and "Shy Sidekicks". In Mario Power Tennis, Daisy says to Luigi, "Hey, sweetie! I'll take that", while receiving her trophy from Luigi. In the Mario Baseball series, Luigi and Daisy share good chemistry. In Mario Kart Wii, there is a giant, golden statue on Daisy Circuit that shows the two holding hands and dancing together, along with another of Baby Luigi and Baby Daisy. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Daisy's trophy states, "After her appearance in Mario Golf, some gossips started portraying her as Luigi's answer to Mario's Peach". The official Mario Party 4 guide states that Luigi has a crush on Daisy.

....Huh....Shows how much I know then.
As you were.

Maybe Bowser has realised that he is terrible at kidnapping and has resorted to selling bootleg jewelry, Mario unwittingly buys some only to be humiliated by Peach who thinks he is a cheapskate and is insulting her fine tastes? The game is all about people seeking refunds in a 'smash-you-in-the-face' kind of way.

That image is kinda irritating. A ring fitting Mario would fit Peach as a bracelet...

Somehow, I see and think of that idea, and all I can see is the scene in Dragon's Lair 2 when the bad guy puts the ring on the princess' finger and she turns into a monster...

Now that would make for an interesting final boss fight.

B-but my Peach X Rosalina ship! What will happen!

Don't you know? Peach is just crazy.

Actually, they have much more Chemistry to them (Always officially being Boyfriend and Girlfriend) then Mario and Peach (Who started off dating, but then became pals... Blah blah blah) do.

OT: Well, that's a surprise to me! I thought they weren't dating anymore, but surprise surprise! They are!

Good for them.... They're not real.

I'm going to need to make a retraction X_X

.....I can honestly say that I never saw this coming. It'll be interesting if it goes through, mainly so I can go to D.C. and scream "Nintendo made it so that Mario is married! What's your excuse!?"

I doubt random as (if the previous dojo is evidence of) it's a particular choice for it's creative camera work. So not random, but doubtful it means anything.

Besides, if you look at the Peach model on the Dojo, you'll see she has the ring on as part of it.

I actually like that idea a lot.

I hope if there is ever a final game in the Mario series, that Mario and Peach tie the knot at the end. Bowser may be evil, but he won't mess with holy matrimony, at least I would hold him to higher standards anyway. >.>

The ring is on her middle finger and it looks like she's taking it off. She's probably giving it to Mario as a blessing. While I would like to see some sort of change in the Mario canon, I have a hard time believing this is anything more than a tease without a payoff.

EDIT: Also, it looks like Mario is in a fighting stance so she's probably just doing one of her attacks.

So, Nintendo is nudging the Mario Status Quo just a little bit?
That kinda is newsworthy considering Nintendo hasn't changed much of anything in the last decade.
Well, except introduce "Waggle" and "Wii" to some people's vocabulary.

So, if Mario and Peach get hitched, does he become Prince Mario? Will Luigi be best man and Daisy maid of honor? Who will give the bride away at the wedding? Toadsworth? Who will perform the ceremony? Rosalina, since she seems like the highest authority figure in the series so far?

Also, ew, ew, ew, ew, ew, ew, ew. I just got a mental image of their wedding night.

Still, if they get married, would it change all that much? Saving the wife from Bowser is not really different from saving the love interest.

After almost 30 years, you finally decide to tie the knot?

Didn't the Galaxy games sort of give a few hints that Mario and Peach were more than just friends? I mean, Peach is referred to as his "special one" throughout the game, and the whole story is, as the game explains it, a metaphor for loved ones coming back together.

OT: It's probably an equivalent to the sticky bomb from Brawl. Or perhaps it is replacing the Franklin Badge? Maybe it is similar to the Franklin badge but has different properties. Either way, I'm betting this is an item, given how many screenshots rely on Peach and Mario performing moves that correspond to item placements that make it look like they are on a date.

Kinda reminds me of comic books when they wanted attention...Spiderman marries Mary Jane, Superman marries Lois Lane, and so on..... If it's true it reeks of desperation, but I'd bet on it just being a in-game screen. It's not even on the right finger.

Err... Peter Parker married Mary Jane because it was the natural progression of their relationship (as it had been written).

Hell, Peter would have gotten married way earlier if Marvel hadn't decided they wanted to keep him single; instead giving us The Night Gwen Stacy Died.

EDIT: Well, not so much single as unmarried. They thought marriage was the only place the relationship could realistically go, and no one was really comfortable with that at the time.

...I kinda want to see Bowser & Peach get married 0.0 Poor Bowser, he's just misunderstood.

But Spiderman and Supes have almost always been in an actual romantic relationship with their respective women (well Pete had Gwen Stacy before, but does she even exist any more? I haven't read marvel in years, and even when I did, MJ was the love interest), granted they do generate a large amount of publicity, but it's the natural progression given they've been written as being in said fleshed out relationships for years, especially for Parker where MJ is an even more integral part of his character than Lois is for Supes these days.

This on the other hand does seem a bit of a stunt. Sure Mario saves Peach all the time, but the characters are hardly fleshed out anywhere near the degree that would be necessary to extrapolate any form of romantic relationship, aside from Mario saving her, the only other interaction they have is Peach kissing him on the cheek and him blushing like hell.

That does make sense. Though the 1-up would take about 9 months to actually pop out.

Well, you have a point, considering that most Mario characters have the personality of a cardboard fish.

I feel like it'd be a little difficult for two characters whose most-uttered phrases involve shouting their names to actually have chemistry together; Though who knows, maybe they bonded over that fact.

OT: Chalk me up for another person who finds it unlikely that Nintendo is altering the status quo.

It'd be funny if they did, though.

Whoa whoa whoa, hold up. What about Pauline from Donkey Kong? The original Nintendo damsel in distress.
Mario you bastard!

Dead Century:

They probably broke up when Mario moved to the Mushroom Kingdom.

The princess-saving business was obviously more lucrative than construction.

And now I'm wondering if there's fanfic out there that details how this happened.

It's about time, Toadstool's been keepin' dat peach in the basket for too long for mario not to take a bite. I suppose after all those years of free plumbing and "gynecology appointments" she owned him something :P

*sigh* you people are reading way too much into this...
