We've seen worse in the console wars my friend
Sega did this a lot during the 1990s: "Genesis does what Nintendon't" and all that. Let's also not forget how a burly black guy mocked us from our television sets about waiting for Nintendo to make a CD gaming system instead of going out and buying the Sega CD. (Because, after all, the Sega CD was so very worth your dollar.)
* Sega even tried it with the Playstation when the ill-fated Sega Saturn was released. Ads for the system and for one of its (very few) killer apps, NiGHTS into Dreams, referred to the Playstation as "Plaything" and included such imagery as a baby with a grown man's head and someone dropping a Playstation console off a building. Sega were really damn bitter. * Sega was also on the receiving end of a Take That, courtesy of Turbo Technologies, Inc. (makers of the TurboDuo), who ran a series of multi-page advertising comics featuring a superhero called Johnny Turbo taking on the evil goons of faceless corporate monster FEKA. Of course, the comics were so ridiculous (one comic had Johnny melodramatically declare, after discovering a group of FEKA goons were Mecha Mooks, "They're not even human!") and filled with Ho Yay that many speculate that the real Take That was directed towards TTI employee John Brandstetter, who served as the model for Johnny Turbo. * Surprisingly enough, Nintendo did strike back at Sega with the Donkey Kong Country Tv Ad, announcing it as the "First Fully rendered Video Gamer EVER" which, obviously, was not to be found "on Sega", "on 32X Adaptors" and "on CD-Rom". o Furthermore, one of the Donkey Kong Country games had a results screen that included a garbage can labeled "No Hopers". Some of the items lying around the bucket included Earthworm Jim's laser and, of course, Sonic the Hedgehog's shoes. * Though Sega did some more Take Thatting of their own in 2001 - while Sony was having problems with not having enough Play Station 2's on the shelves, during that year's E3 conference in Los Angeles, Sega drove a truck around the parking lot with a large message printed on the side: "Our condolences to Sony regarding their console shortage problems." This was accompanied by an even bigger picture of a young boy sticking his tongue out (presumably at Sony). o And speaking of Sony's problems, Microsoft's X Box 360 campaigning during PS 3's launch was pure Take That glory. Highlights were crashing Sony's live broadcast launch party held on a ship by parking another ship in the background with a large X Box 360 poster on the side, and Microsoft employees offering chairs for people queueing up for game stores on launch day, each chair decorated with an advert for a website where you could read Microsoft's sympathies for people having to wait in rain when they could have just played a 360 ages before.
I don't know about the 360 not offering good value. You can pick up a 60gig Premium with 3 big, recent games (Gears of War 2, Pro Evo Soccer 2009 and Fallout 3) for £189 (about $286) if you know where to look. Phooey.
You know I remember people giving them the same shit with the PS2.
I don;t recall that really.
Anyway, they don't learn that if someone can pull an innovation off before them, it's legit and they can't complain.
They don't learn that if you sew someone for inventing a format before them that had 3 letters the same, people are gonna think they're assholes.
They don't learn that it's so much easier to make PC games than console games and that their main competitor in the console world is in fact a PC.
They don't understand that a console that's roughly the same price with add-ons and less expensive without is more attractive because it's more relaxed on the budget.
EDIT: Though after reading your post more clearly, I may have jumped the gun on what you were talking about. This post will more or less be directed to everyone.
How dare you agree with me, sir; this is an Internet forum! We can't have that!

As for your other points.
Who?
Who?
It's allways going to be difficult developing for a new format, Valkyria Chronicles, Ratchet and Clank Future, inFamous, White Knight Chronicles, are all showing what can be done when you get your head around the technology.
Most people WILL buy those Add-ons so it IS more for your money.
Then me, a PC user will use my freedom of speech to slam every console on the market for being inflexible and offering shoddy 4 year old over priced technology.

Ah, the internet, such lovely ironies populate the digital world.
So MS could basicly just slam back with "Sony doesn't offer HD out of the box" and win the arguement presented here. Also HD over WiFi? Good luck with that. WiFi is useless in this HD generation.
I'm quite happy with my set up. At current market price, I have spent £180 on a 20gb hard drived console with a VGA cable (and scart), which leaves me an additional £120 to spen on games before I reach the lowest priced PS3. I don't mind a couple of wires around the place (at least can wait til next console generation) so I can successfully use the media extender element to watch anything off of my pc. I'm feeling pretty good about my purchase at the moment, and I don't particularly want to have to buy a £300+ new television just to see the benefits of my new console. SOny need to learn that the vast majority of people simply aren't in a rush to upgrade to HD (though technically, with my 360 attatched to my monitor, I'm there).
Onmi: And speaking of Sony's problems, Microsoft's X Box 360 campaigning during PS 3's launch was pure Take That glory. Sorry, only just read this, but this is pure class. Take that Sony's advertising division with your commercials with people in some kind of mansion that has nothing to do with any gameplay.
The PS3 reminds me of Henry VIII. They both spent huge amounts of money earned by their predecessor, with little return in the field they are in (Henry VIII ended up gout-ridden and fat, the PS3 served to make Blu-Ray more popular). Their predecessors were the most powerful of their time, and they will both be remembered for their shortcomings. Also, Henry VIII lied about not being able to put SixAxis inside him, but by God, he finally did it.
I think it's just sad that Sony is really acting like this.
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, ADAPT TO THE SITUATION!
The Playstation 3 was good on paper, but if it doesn't work out in life, ADAPT! Don't trick yourself into thinking if you leave it alone long enough, it'll beat down the competition. It won't.
You know I remember people giving them the same shit with the PS2.

Sorry bud, you don't seem to know what you're talking about at all.
Onmi: I would like to ask something, what do people mean when they say 'My 360 gives me things my PS3 cant' while I can understand video games, but not a lot, Hardware-wise the PS3 is better, it doesn't have the failure rate, and oh yeah.
Depends what you mean by "failure rate." For example, my friend has a PS3, I've seen him play it a handful of times and almost every time I've watched him play, the thing lagged and/or froze up. Granted, my 360 isn't perfect; I've had freezing problems once or twice, but only with certain games- my friend's PS3 has frozen up at least 6 times that I've witnessed. Or are you referring to catastrophic failure, the Red Ring of Death that PS3 fanboys drag along to every console discussion because they've heard "PS3 has no games" one too many times? Frankly, I've never had that problem and I've had my 360 for over two years now.
Live isn't that much better than PSN and I've used both.
I don't see why PS3 fanboys (Sony included) brag about PS Network being free- for one, it's hardly free. Sure, you can play games on it without having to shell out any cash, but if you actually want to download anything, that's where Sony starts drop kicking your wallet. Both services are free to create an account, both services cost money to do anything else with the service. The only real difference between the two is that Sony doesn't charge you to play games with other people.
Sorry, only just read this, but this is pure class. Take that Sony's advertising division with your commercials with people in some kind of mansion that has nothing to do with any gameplay.
Three words...
"I'M PLAYIN' NUT!"
What a gawd-awful campaign that was. Granted, it was an amusing series of commercials; but I greatly hope that Sony has a company cannon designed for "firing" employees that come up with such dumb ideas. "It's like a nut you can play outside."
I think the only thing to be gained from this topic is that M$ fanboys are now equally as annoying as Nintendrones, rather then just slightly less annoying.
I think it's arrogance on Sony's part. They've led the console wars longer than either Nintendo or Sega (11 years Sony, and anything beween 1988 and 1995 was basically squabbling beween the two Japanese companies). They've been sitting pretty for a good long while atop their might sales figures. However, if a newcomer like Sony could unravel one of the major two rival hardware companies (being Sega), then Sony really need to start seeing Microsoft as genuine competition. I think neither are worried that their target audience is abandoning them to Nintendo (although many may make that purchase also, as I plan to do when they're under £100), but at least Microsoft are taking Sony seriously, despite the lead they have. They know Sony are the most popular brand amongst their target demographic, and know that their lead could easily be swept off, and work towards pushing that eventuality at least further into the future. Sony just seems to think it can sit and wait, and things will happen for it. If they want to win against Microsoft, they're gonna have to pull something major out of the hat.
You know I remember people giving them the same shit with the PS2.

And just saying "Sorry buddy you don't seem to know what your talking about at all" is an insult to my intelligence, i'm rather sure the fact the PS3 has more exclusives overall than the 360 (Granted I did the counting in early 2008 including titles in development for both consoles), additionally that those games I mentioned are using the PS3 hardware and looking great, in the beginning yes there were problems deving for it, not anymore though.
And people do buy those Add-ons, at the very least a Wireless Router. I should know I have plenty of friends with 360's and a brother with one. I feel qualified to talk about something I've played.

Conversely, I have plenty of friends who don't use a wireless router. Which of us is right I wonder?

Translation: I can't be assed/don't actually have a defence, so I'll just insult you.
photog212: As long as PS3 and 360 exist the two consoles have to constantly compete against each other for the public's money. This means that the two companies will always try to out do each other by creating better consoles, better hardware, better exclusives, so on and so forth. Competition causes evolution. So who ultimately wins? The consumer. So to all the people who wish downfall upon the system they do not own, please take a course in economics.
You realise of course that Sony have just raped that entire concept re: multimedia formats. Ain't monopolies a beautiful thing?
I don't understand, Blu-Ray isn't going to the 360, if you mean it winning the format war, that happened a long time ago to, I.E. Betamix losing to VHS, it still allows for the growth of evolution.
As for the consoles? The next generation will be better, I simply believe that based on competition, of course the reverse could happen and all consoles go the way of the Wii (I mean Shovelware Gallore not that there aren't good games)
Still let it be a contest.
*shrugs* it will pay off for the consumer with quality.
Small problem with that theory. Sony now control the next prime medium for data, movie and game storage - blu-ray. They own it. You want to create a device that can handle blu-ray? Licensing fees to Sony please. You want to commercially release something on blu-ray? Licensing fees to Sony please.
They've got us by the balls now, and when DVD dies, we're going to be stuck with blu-ray for a very long time, because Sony are going to do all in their power to crush any potential competition, stifiling evolution and strangling the market.

...Well that sucks doesn't it. Wait... has any company ever 'Owned' a format before? is this unprecedented? You can probably make a case against it because it has no competitor... I think.
johnx61: Omni, don't waste your breath. Every fanboy clings to the backwards notion that crappy graphics, over-simplified gameplay and constantly re-hashed storylines make the best games.

They developed the format, they own the Intellectual Property rights to it. And given Sony's track record, I find it highly unlikely they're going to make it an open standard. Which means, anyone who wants to use their format must license it from them. Hell, if they want to go so far, anyone who wants to VIEW what's on their format must license that right from them. You don't own those blu-ray discs - you just have a license to view the content.
You know I remember people giving them the same shit with the PS2.
That may be true, but you have to admit, the chart does seem a little like sour grapes. Nothing on it is untrue, but you don't see anyone else doing it, or I certainly haven't.
No body else has had too, it's no secret that sony's poor marketing has hurt it and very few people are aware of what you get. Infact there are still gamestore empoyees that don't know the sony network is free, people still believe it has no games, etc.

It won't work exactly like that but sony's quick strike to end the format war before it took off and cost them millions in the long run was a good move.
What they've done is take all the money they made from the PS2 and spend it on something that will end the console war after this one, how is microsofts next console going to compete with the PS3, short answer is, it can't.

Well, the Wii is managing OK and isn't even getting involved in the whole multimedia thing. What MS could do is invent some new form of disc for games alone (I hear there are Tetrabyte sized discs on the way), and just use a download service for movies and the like. I barely use my 360 for movies anyway.
If PS3 continue to stick to there guns theres a good chance they'll murg or disappear from the next console generation altogether.
You really believe that Sony will disappear from making consoles? You are an idiot and have lost your privilege to post.
This, considering what I'm about to do, is an ironic post.
This is hilarious. Good job.
V-Otix misquoted me and insulted me. I didn't bite. I pointed out his error, he apologized but the guy still can't help himself from getting banned by insulting everyone else. Pity...
jebussaves88: *snip - great post* If they want to win against Microsoft, they're gonna have to pull something major out of the hat.
Excellent point and well made but I think Sony do see Microsoft as competition (they must). Sony's advertising has been sparse. I think they have been disregarding Microsoft's clout and M$ have run riot with their media coverage. Exclusive to Xbox all over everything, (er, no it's not) why is Sony letting them do this?
Hopefully, this and their recent increased advertisment is them recognising they wont be gifted the audience they think they, and do, deserve.
I hate to see Sony getting bad press. It seems overzealous to not think the PS3 is a great machine with loads of great games.

Indeed, I think even nintendo didn't forsee how well the wii could do though, what sonys mistake there was is not trying to throw the PS2 back into the ring against it (before anyone says it, yes I know they still sell PS2s cheaper then Wii's but they havn't produced any new games for it :D).
The problem for microsoft with inventing a new thing or system (as sega discovered with the dream cast) is that without long term backing of a well selling product (the 360 doesn't sell that well and is plagued with design faults) is that there's nothing to carry you through the low times.

Actually there were games released for the PS2 all of last year, and i'm sure there will be this year to.
although not as many, it's still not running as competition, but it is a source of income.

Isn't sony still running at a loss (or close to it) with the PS3?
I remember reading that on Game politics (or something to that extent), so sony going out of the console race sega style isn't impossable. Just not likely.
EDIT: Damm, wanted to reply to what was said but couldn't as it was a blocked post.

Yes but all consoles run at a loss, the lifespan of a console is generally 7 years, Sega went down because they had an alternate one out every odd year.
Not to mention the Blu-Ray format will make money, and the PS2 makes money, hence they aren't likely to stop.
as an honest question, how many years did it take the 360 to break even? (I have no doubt the Wii is already turning profit)
That may be true, but you have to admit, the chart does seem a little like sour grapes. Nothing on it is untrue, but you don't see anyone else doing it, or I certainly haven't.
