Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Swells to More Than 1.5 Million Users

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Swells to More Than 1.5 Million Users

FF14

Several Phoenix Downs later, the formerly panned MMO is being embraced by players.

Square Enix put a hefty amount of resources into relaunching its beleaguered MMO as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. Other companies might have just cut their losses and left the game to wither and die, but the Final Fantasy name wasn't one they were willing to walk away from.

All that effort seems to have paid off, though, as recent reports indicate that A Realm Reborn has more than 1.5 million registered users worldwide since its August launch. While it's not clear how many of those registered are actively playing the game, with subscription fees ranging between $13 and $15 a month based on payment plans it probably still comes out to a considerable windfall for the company.

All things considered, it's a mighty impressive launch for any game, especially considering that Final Fantasy XIV was almost universally criticized at launch. Heck, back in September, even the game's director was surprised at the number of players who were eager to jump into the game.

I'm just really glad this game came back good and that people are playing. If it's still going strong in a month or two, I'll probably pick it up and check it out.

Hey look admitting a mistake can actually do you some good.

It's kind of inspiring how one of the worst MMOs to ever be released can get reborn into an MMO nearly on par with World of Warcraft.

Assuming that it's still going strong in a few months I'm so there.

I have no idea why, but it just looks like a lot of fun.

I'm glad that they came back and actually fixed a lot of the problems that they had to make it a better game. Not something you see all the time.

Well isn't that nice to hear. I'd increase that number by one but it's my policy to only pay for something once. Still, it's nice to see the game doing well now that they've fixed the problems.

This game is a vast improvement over it's original incarnation and is currently my favorite MMORPG. It's a pretty excellent game. But let us not forget just how unprepared they were for how popular it would become at launch...

Error 1017...

Never Forget...

I'm thinking I'll pick this up when I get my PS4 in a few weeks. I've been hearing good things, and I do love Final Fantasy more than I should. Honestly, I played FFXI and loved it for a long time. The only major problem there was the game was very unfriendly to solo play and Gil selling had pretty much fucked the economy.

Final Fantasy, why can't I quit you?

Which just goes to show you how poor everyone's taste is!

Good luck getting an insurance, or any other type of ongoing service, I guess? :P

If you bought the original release, you get ARR for free.

I'm loving this game and just got to Titan HM!

I bought the game when it first releases. Compared to FFXI I wasn't impressed with FFXIV. It was better looking by far, but lacked something. So when the game shut down there was little surprise. But they treated it like a beta and worked hard. The new incarnation is by far much better. It's fun and interesting to play and has the charm that is Final Fantasy.

The thing I hate about this game is the fact that it feels more likE Wow than Final Fantasy. With minor examples, FF has always been a D&D-inspired turn-based but sometimes not franchise with a wide array of places to explore. Not... WoW. I hope they improve on it, though. Just as long as Spell Drawing never as much as makes brief eye contact with the game.

Nearly? World of Warcraft is a sick lame dog that is now hoping to be a rescue. But it has progressed too badly to be saved. And that solely is on Activision for the state that game ended up in. FFXIV though got took over by a fantastic developer and I firmly believe with the commercialization and popularity ARR has produced, it will replace WoW as a top dog in the yard. They've got a lot going for them.

I'll give them credit, they went back and fixed a broken game, creating a solid new product that people would actually enjoy.

Of course, I'd have to take it right back because they still allowed it to be released in that shitty state in the first place and assumed that the FF name alone would carry it, which was inexcusable.

Even so, we can't exactly afford to give them the boot. I'd rather support a company that makes mistakes and learns from them for the better than a company that normally makes good stuff, but refuses to improve what it does wrong until its entire brand name is dragged through the mud.

It's a fun game that I caved and bought but it does have a lot of problems that SE refuse to even talk to the community about such as the 140 page thread on peer to peer throttling or the 130 page thread about the Danger zones not being in sync to what is actually happening so you are about 1.5 seconds behind what is going on also the horrendous 300ms polling that takes place the massive teleporting bot invasion that is probably 500k of those subs and the gold seller spam. The rendering priority on minions and not mobs when your trying to do a fate but all you can see is dead mob's popping, But if you can get past all that the game is actually quite fun.

You can see he was out of the danger zone when the cast bar had still yet to complete but still gets hit.
This was a problrm in 1.0 it was why Yoshi-p said they had to scrap and redo all the old server code loosk like that didn't happen then in beta we were told it will be fixed by release and now we are totally ignored....

P2P throttling...

It's still fun though just hope to god you don't suffer from any of the major problems this game has. And if you are getting a PS 4 you can get the PS3 version of the game cheap as chips now well i did and get a free upgrade to the ps4 version when it is out and also join the beta for ps4 version.

Hey, nice! Now I am more determined than ever to buy the game and get started.

...and get ta chattin'! Myself, Miyenne and IndomitableSam are on quite frequently so getting a hold of someone shouldn't be an issue.

Could you explain your reasoning for this post, please?

I'm curious by what you mean and imply...

Bah, Morgan beat me to it.

Everyone's welcome, but we are kinda a tight group, as in we are not rushing endgame, we work together on everything, even if it's three 50's running a new player through the first instances, we share materials for crafting, and we're all working together to save up for and level different crafts (to make all the furniture) for housing that's coming in December. (December is the community's best guess for the new patch, anyways.)

I just want to keep it so... friendly and happy and cozy, I guess are the right words.

Come join us on Malboro when you do - we've got a bunch of Escapists together in a guild - a Free Company. All ranges of skill and experience, too. And people with lots of time or none. See @Miyenne and @CrazyCapnMorgan 's posts for more info.

Oh... crap. FF isn't available on the PS4 right away. >.> I just remembered. I don't know when it will be, either. Damn. BUT - I think PS3 users get the PS4 version for free.

[snip]

When you were talking about the lengthy thread all I could think of is that one thread in the forum aka the 50 page "Why does my Catgirl has no butt anymore this is a gamebreaking Feature!".

To be honest I haven't had any teleporting bot problems but that might be because I ignore everything that has to do with crafting in most MMOs.
It is still fun but it has a lot of small problems which will maybe someday will resolved.

Malboro? I can remember that. Sure, I'll happily join you guys when I do. I've played FFXI, WoW, and TOR, and I'm pretty decent in all party roles (DPS, healing, tanking), so I shouldn't be a hindrance.

I was thinking about getting it on PS3, but after checking my checking account (stupid car insurance) I'm thinking I'll hold off on that sort of thing. Anyway, I look forward to joining. Especially since you guys seem to be a decent lot from the other posts, I read.

That's why the guy responsible for that train wreck no longer works at square from my understanding. Yoshi took the game over and rebuilt it from the ground up from the lore that was already created, and expanded the lore.

Not surprising considering how great it is. I positively love it.

I bought that game, couldn't ever actually connect to their server, the customer service blew me off and just kept telling me to try again later over and over until my free month was up and I hadn't seen the inside of the game a single time.
Their customer service is atrociously bad, they didn't care one bit about actually helping me, every time I wrote them it took 2-3 business days (they don't do anything on weekends) for them to get back at me and then they would just give me a canned response and close the issue.
I don't blame them for an issue that obviously is only affecting me, but they didn't ask any questions or try to help me figure it out or anything. They just kept coming back with their "Try again later" line over and over until my game time ran out. What do they expect me to do? Subscribe to a game that doesn't work just so I can keep trying?!
