Titanfall Will Not Be Released On PlayStation 4

Electronic Arts says Titanfall will be "exclusive" to Xbox consoles and the PC for as long as it exists.

If you're committed to a PlayStation 4, and only a PlayStation 4, for the next console generation, Electronic Arts Chief Financial Officer Blake Jorgensen has some bad news: You don't get to play Titanfall. Ever.

"In the case of Titanfall, it's a brand new IP, and it's exclusive only - through the life of the title - for Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC," he said during a conference call with investors. And in case that wasn't clear enough, Microsoft's Larry Hryb, better known as Major Nelson, followed up with a tweet stating, "@TitanFallgame is exclusive. No, not a timed exclusive. It will only be available on Xbox One, Xbox 360 & PC."

It's certainly not the most exclusive "exclusive" ever; under the circumstances, it seems clear that this is less about keeping the game on one particular system than it is about keeping it off of another - and you can bet that Microsoft paid handsomely to make it happen. But is Titanfall really enough of a "killer app" to make it worth whatever money Microsoft threw at it? Only time will tell.

What about Titanfall: Game of the Year Edition? Can that be released on PS4?

P.S. Thanks

Woah....I dont even wanna know how much money Microsoft threw at Ea to make this happen.
I dont care a bit for the game, and wont buy a console anyway, but this is gonna be interesting.
Still, I dont think it will be as big as COD. So...no deathstrike.

Meh, it isn't that big of a deal. Most people were going to buy it on PC anyways. I highly doubt many sales will come from the Xbox One version.

Lol...did you see how much COD sells on (both) consoles? And since these are the same lead developers and the same style of multiplayer-gameplay, its pretty clear thast where they wanna go. It sold more or about as much (including online distribution) on each consoles as it did on PC.
It is a big deal.

I know that technically he is usin exclusive correctly since its excludin the PS4 version. However when people talk about exclusives for games they generally mean its only on one system. Sayin its exclusive and then namin 3 platforms it will be on seems like bullshit speak for someone paid us a lot of money to not put this on the PS4.

Related to that. The fuck yo?

The PS4 and Xbox ONE are almost exactly the same console. They have the same architecture, roughly the same specs with the PS4 edgin the Xbox ONE out in most areas, they use the same disc types (I think?), the same type of hard drives. Why the hell would any publisher/developer make a game for both? This isn't the 360 and PS3 times where you had to deal with the idiocy that was the PS3's architecture and the time it would take to port a game to either console from the other should be nonexistent.

So yeah. Why make an exclusive game at all for the next console generation? It just seems pointless and lazy since there should be almost no technical reason why you would need to.

It has nothing to to with being lazy....but rather with a huge pile of money that microsoft payed for the exclusivity deal.
At least they got a whole game for it. Its embarassing how much money they spend in the last years just for some pointless DLC-exclusivity.

EA wants to make it into a franchise, though. So the next one will probably not be an exclusive.

How exactly does EA benefit from this? I really don't see. If this game is as good as everyone seems to think it's going to be, it could very well be the killer app of the next generation. It could very well be the next generation's Call of Duty. But that's way less likely to happen if they only make it available to half the owners of next gen consoles. I just don't see any amount of money that Microsoft could give EA that would make this remotely worthwhile.

I'll be waiting for that as well.

I'm glad to hear that Microsoft is finally doing something about getting exclusives! It seemed like every exclusive the 360 had eventually went off to the PS3 eventually or PC...oh...wait, this is going to PC...not really exclusive then, is it? Well, at least XBone80 users will have Sunset Overdrive and...Halo...Gears of War...and Fable...also Forza, I guess.

In this case, yes. There obviously was a big pile of money involved.

However I guess I was more talkin about the future releases and especially with regards to PC releases. The new consoles have actual PC architecture in them now to the point that they literally are just PC's that you can't modify. There's zero reason that every game comin out for the next generation of consoles shouldn't be on every single platform.

A company trying to make their product seem more appealing than that of the competition?

This has never happened before. At any point in history.

Titanfall will release on both the 360 and PC, where the majority of the sales will go. Do you really think people would go out and buy this game over an exclusive when they buy a new console? I don't doubt millions will sell on the Xbox One, I am just saying it won't be even half of what the PC sells.

Meh I'll play it on PC if at all. Whatever amount MS paid them for exclusivity won't make the Xbone suck less.

Edit: Apparently EA made the deal behind the devs backs so...yeah...yet another case of EA being greedy assholes.

Well, feeling really like a smart-ass today, I have to say no.
First of all with developing PC-hardware most games trying to push its graphical limits cant be available (in the same quality) on Sony and Microsoft consoles.
Also, with the kinect integration there is another hurdle, even just between PS4 and Xbox one.
And the WiiU obviously has a completely different hardware to work with.
And because Microsoft and Sony (and Nintendo as well, obviously) are publishing games themselves, its obvious that those wont be multiplattform as well.
So sorry, but there will be lots of exclusives in this gen as well.

Well so much for the whole "Oh Titanfall will eventually go to PS4" posts I read after E3.

But it really seems like they're quite desperate to keep it on Xbox consoles.

This is a surprise. How many firstborn sons did Microsoft promise to EA to make this deal go through? I'm really surprised that EA even agreed. From what I have heard, Xbone will have a MUCH smaller install base at launch. It sounds like shooting oneself in the foot.

For the record, when I asked at my own Gamestop, the manager told it they have about five times as many PS4 preorders. I'm kinda tempted to ask around, but I suspect, that in my area, this will largely hold true.

A bit of a blow to the PS4, Titanfall looks to be one of the more interesting shooters coming out, the first that actually made me think, "Oooh, I might get that!"

But lets back up and put this in perspective guys, consider the last generation, the 360 got a head start, was cheaper, had more established IPs (ie Halo) than the PS3, and yet at the end of this generation the war has come to a bit of a draw. The Xbone is still fighting a massive PR backlash, we who keep up to date on the gaming scene might not realise how bad it is. I have talked to my 12 year old cousin, he wants a PS4, not an XOne, why? "Cos its bad, everyone says so." Similar with a couple of my co-workers who don't follow games in any big way.

In the meantime, I'll just keep with my PC, and hopefully someone will kindly give me a full time job soon. I want the disposable income to get a new chip and motherboard.

Because Microsoft probably paid them more money than they thought they'd make from selling PS4 copies. Every exclusive game makes at least one person's decision on which console to buy. Microsoft's betting that having this exclusive (as far as consoles go) will give them an edge in console sales.

But holy shit, that must have been a lot of money.

Wait, it's on the PC too? And the XBox 360?

So it's not an exclusive, like they've been saying since day one? I'm confused, guess PC doesn't count any more...

Saltyk:

When I read this story all I could honestly think of is a journel entry in Far Cry 3 that reads " The deal included hundreds of 6P9 handguns, extra parts, ammunition and one thousand hookers... a day".

Replace the first part of that sentence with Titan Fall exclusivity and odds are you'd get the asking price for this deal.

Not that I really care about things that aren't JRPGs/Sony & Nintendo exclusives or do more than look at recent MS threads just for a laugh, but isn't this the same guy that said Metal Gear V was an Xbone exclusive?

Hold on a second! Are you telling me that the PS3/PS4 will have one generic brown 'n' grey first-person shooter (albeit with a second HUD option known as a mech) less than the 360/XBone/PC? Well, that just made my day. Well, played Microsoft and EA. I tip my hat to you for making me want to get a PS4 that much more.

In other news; Infamous Second Son won't be released on the Xbox One. You keep saying exclusive, but the PC release determined that was a lie.

Its not the general way its used in gaming, but his use of exclusive is correct. Its excludin the PS4, not its only on the Xbox One.

"@TitanFallgame is exclusive. No, not a timed exclusive. It will only be available on Xbox One, Xbox 360 & PC."

That's alright, I don't want a game from a developer who doesn't even know basic gaming terminology anyway. PC is a gaming platform in its own right just like Xbox One and PS4 (as is the 360 for that matter).

In all seriousness I was only semi interested in this before, I'm much more interested in Battlefield 4 for the next gen of multiplayer shooters.

How is this exclusivity considered "news"? I found out about it months ago.

You and I use that word very differently. When I hear 'Exclusive' I assume it is only available in one spot, destination, what-have-you. Using an example I mentioned; Infamous Second Son is just for the PS4, nothing else. That's exclusive (to me), If I was desperate enough to play Titanfall I could just buy it for PC and not have to get an Xbox One.

It's not an Xbox One exclusive if it's also going to be on the PC.

I mean, that doesn't even make sense.

Evonisia:

Well what else have they got? The only exclusives (other than Halo, Gears, Forza and Fable) they have are:

Dead Rising 3
Ryse: Son of Rome
Quantum Break
Crimson Dragon
Killer Instinct
Below

Titanfall will outsell all of those by far. So you can see why Microsoft is clinging to it so desperately. Personally I'm not interested in any of those games. Titanfall looks a lot more fun than any of those.

Shit I just realised this is an EA game. Well looks like it's gone from a purchase if on sale to another game I won't be touching.

So EA, how's that "unprecedented partnership" with Nintendo going? Oh, you went back on your word? Then why should believe you about Titanfall remaining exclusive.

I think MS might make a loss here, a IP like this is big business for EA, think of how many unit's it could shift on PS4.
Now, in order to keep it off PS4, MS would have had to play them a sum large enough to cover the difference.

If the game Flops (Which could happen, seeing how it's just COD!Halo), then they will be in the hole for millions with little to show for it.
On top of that, Even a game like this can't redeem Xbone's PR Nightmare.

I'd say worst case scenario for me is that Titanfall becomes the new Halo, and I miss out on it because I don't buy an Xbone. Best case scenario is that I get enough money for a gaming PC and a PS4, and STILL don't buy a Xbone. Either way, I' not buying an Xbone. Great work, Microsoft, I hope the pile of money you threw at EA burns in hell.

Isn't this the same Major Nelson that said "you can't just remove the kinect from XBONE. It's INTEGRATED/INTEGRAL to the console. They're one,"?

I've gotta call bullshit on this. There is no way in hell MS could have paid EA enough to make EA think they were getting more money from MS than they would have been had they released on the PS4, the next gen console will have the hands down largest market share, if for no other reason than MS having limited launch.

Or, MS paid out the ass for this, and it's just another in a long line of costly decisions that they are going to try backpedalling from.

Also, let's assume this really is a timed exclusive: does anyone expect them to admit that? They're banking on the idea that the game is "Exclusive" being a system seller. No way they risk people saying "I'll just get a PS4 and wait for Titanfall."

Also, this is EA we're talking about. The folks that have been chasing Activision's success with COD to the point that they, arguably, bastardized Battlefield, and cannibalized Medal of Honor to do it. With all that they went through to grab the original Modern Warfare guys from activision, and this being the original Modern Warfare guys' first IP for EA, why would EA say "we want that COD install base, so let's get it by limiting ourselves the XBONE and neglecting the more far reaching, consumer favorable PS4."?

I didn't plan on buying a PS4 until they release a PS4 Slim, or whatever they end up calling it (especially after the news of that day one console update for the PS4) anyway, so I'm betting there will be a Titanfall: GOTY edition that doesn't fall under the "Exclusivity umbrella." But seriously, MS has done some stupid things, but there is no way they could have paid EA enough for EA to exclude the PS4. I can't fathom being able to sign over that much money to someone.

No PS4 release...?

Well... that's a little disappointing.

Good thing I have a computer.
