Sony: We Announced Home Too Early

The PlayStation 3's online service Home is starting to realize its promises - two years after its announcement and years after its start as part of The Getaway.

"It's gone through waves. Initially, there was real excitement from people, because we were showing something really different and that had a lot of potential," said game director Peter Edward on development dreams of Home, Sony's virtual world and online gaming hub for its console.

The hardest obstacle Sony has faced since its announcement of the Home project has been the high expectations set by Sony's grand vision that have continually been dropped by the media as Home was mired in repeated delays and buggy betas.

He admitted, "And then there's the realisation that, well, we probably announced it too early - GDC 07 was a long time ago. I think there was sort of recognition amongst developers of 'Oh, this is interesting, but there's still a lot of work to be done.'"

"It's changed a lot. Originally it was a lobby interface for The Getaway: Black Monday on PS2 - that was the original goal of it," revealed lead programmer Mitch Goodwin to Develop. "The decision at the time was that there wasn't enough of a PS2 online userbase to justify it, so we were kind of left to explore and take this idea of a lobby system forward."

Yet, the Getaway was cancelled...

seems pointless, it will not help the PS3 sales at all

read article before posting, this isn't about sales PERIOD. this is them admitting a fault.

Look people! Sony are admitting that they announced HOME to early and set expectation to high. How humble of them?

Whatever, I still enjoy HOME for what it is. It can obviously improve a shit-load (loading time loading times LOADING TIMES) but it's good for what it's meant to do which is socializing with people.

+1 they announced it waaay to early

Way too early definitely, also it's launch seemed kind of 'meh'.

It's common knowledge, too early.

Sony finally admitted a mistake!

That leaves about 4999. You're on your way, Sony!

When I was working at Sony FPQA in 2007, the only major thing that changed between the versions I played was the environment. The first version had the main lobby set inside an indoor biosphere-type landscape, whereas the second version was set in an more open-plan area, with chessboards, the cinema, and the arcade around it. Oh, and the chessboards didn't work properly, LOL!

But the thing is, yes they made it look prettier, but they didn't address some of the niggling annoyances about it, for instance, your character at the time walked for a few seconds before they would jog. To those trying to get from one side of an area to another it was quite an annoyance not being able to just hold down a button so the player's avatar would run.

Having said that, on one afternoon where the entire FPQA department was testingit, someone made a lookalike of Mike from Spaced, that was amusing :-) And a male member of staff got into trouble for following around a female member of staff's avatar around, oops!

I haven't seen Home since I left Sony so I don't know if it has changed that much, but from what I have read online, it is mainly the same as it was back in 2007.

Why did Black Monday need a "lobby interface"? There was no multiplayer IIRC.

Operation Backpedal is in effect!

Perhaps multiplayer, along with Home, was taken out of the game.

Sony putting things out too early!? No way. You're joking.

(even if I indicate it like I'm about to, some moron will over look the thick sarcasm contained deep in those words.)

Impossible! really like it's the first time in the history of anything, it's a mistake, they made it, they fessed up, good for them.

I think Sony may have just earned themselves a Trophy.

I really want to make a Duke Nukem Forever joke but since this isn't 3D realms, it's just too out of place.

big fucking duh! wow im with everyone else here. finally sony admits a mistake, thats refresshing.
