Simon Pegg To Join Monty Python Movie

And Robin Williams is his dog. No, really.

Simon Pegg, he of the Cornettos, is set to join the surviving Monty Pythons in their latest sci-fi comedy movie, Absolutely Anything. Pegg will play Neil Clarke, a high school teacher gifted with strange powers by alien beings. The Pythons - John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, Michael Palin - play the aliens, and Robin Williams is Pegg's dog. Not even joking about that last one.

"As someone whose love of comedy was hugely informed by Monty Python, the chance to work with Terry was a gift," says Pegg. "Meeting your heroes is one thing - working with them is something else."

That particular Terry is Jones, who will direct as well as perform. Pegg, says Jones, "is the absolutely perfect Neil;" high praise from a Python, which must have sent Pegg over the moon.

Absolutely Anything will start filming in London, March 23rd 2014.

Robin Williams as his dog, eh? That, actually, DOES sound very Pythonish. (Or at the very least sounds like one of John Cleese's ideas.)

Pegg was born to be in Python. Right mix of good humour and coal black cynicism

I can only see brilliance or disaster at the end of this tunnel.

Always look on the bright side I guess.

I'm going to be negative I feel, but I can only see this ending in disaster

I hope the dog is a Miniature Schnauzer called Colin. But this is a Python film so it's probably called something odd. This is also the first I've heard of this venture, I await further news.

Wait! We're actually getting a brand new Monty Python movie?!

Getting Pegg in on the fun is a good move. Hope they bring in other top-notch UK and/or American comedians for this project. The only downside I see is trying to fill the hole left by the late Graham Chapman. Can a Python movie work without him? I'm just hoping this will turn out good, that's all.

As for Robin Williams playing a dog... not really surprised by that. This is Python, after all.

A new Python movie you say? My body is ready.

If ever there was a modern actor suited to a Python role, it's Pegg.

This is a great day indeed.

Sorry, I must've missed the evening news - when exactly did the planets align into celestial perfection?

Wait wait wait. All the surviving Pythons are making a movie together? Hell. Fucking. Yes.

I cannot fucking wait.

CardinalPiggles:

That's more or less the summary of everything the Pythons ever did the first time round, even if this is terrible, it'll be terrible and funny.

My cynical side is telling me that this might be the worst thing that could ever come from the likes of Monty Python.

But my optimistic side is grabbing me by the shoulders and shaking me furiously while shouting "IT'S MONTY PYTHON, ROBIN WILLIAMS AND SIMON PEGG IN A SCI-FI COMEDY MOVIE, HOW THE FUCK CAN YOU NOT BE EXCITED AT THE MERE THOUGHT OF THAT" at my face.

How about Eric Idle?! He is MY FAVORITE Python.
And his abscence from this story made me rush to wikipedia to make sure that he didn't die.

He is not involved in this project? That would made me a very sad panda.
Either way, very excited!

Not to be 'that guy' but shouldn't this read "Jones, says Pegg"? It just confused me for a second the first time I read it.

EDIT: Nevermind, just re-read it... I'm stupid and wrong haha.

I did the exact same thing. The lack of Eric Idle bums me out. It won't keep me away from this movie but it will always be missing something.

I must see this movie...

I managed to get tickets to the Monty Python live show in London. Can't wait.

Don't know what to tell you. At first I thought Idle might be ill, or something like that, but he's going to be part of the London reunion. IMDB confirms that, at least for now, Idle's not on the cast list. Prior commitment, maybe?

Lets all give a moment of silence for Graham Chapman please...

Also, a sketch written by John Cleese: http://youtu.be/aY-lAYe8xuk (I don't know how to embed)

Idle cut the others out of the money from spamalot and they basically hate his guts. While we are on the subject, Jones and Gilliam always fight over who gets to direct and they all think that Clesse is high handed and arrogant. Hence the long gap between working together.

If they hate each other, how will they be able to do the reunion show without trying to kill each other? (Or break a hip trying...)

Likewise. My reaction: YES! Also, I believe the phrase "Shut Up and Take My Money" is appropriate. And now, the appropriate reference: "Always look on the bright side of life. Doo doo, do do dodo." XD

They lost a legal battle with one of the producers on holy grail and face a bill of several million. Idle has to pay of this bill but is sitting pretty with his spamalot cash. The most of the others need a payday on top that. Clesse got cleaned out by his 3rd blond American ex wife. Jones has just had another baby with his 40 years younger 2nd wife. I guess that Gilliam needs the cash for a film project because he hasn't had a hit in years. As to Palin, no idea beyond the fact that a million always comes in handy.

Seeing the title actually made me do a double-take. If only I could think of a way to express my joy in a way that doesn't rely on overused internet memes.

...

Ah, screw it.

Fair enough, I guess. Seems a bit shallow, but sure. Though where did you read/hear/see/intercept this dispute between them? From what I read, the only reason they haven't gotten together more before was because they wanted to do their own thing for a while, I've never heard of the animosity.

While I don't know a lot about the specific reasons behind it, Michael Palin did say in an interview that Eric Idle didn't participate in A Liar's Autobiography (A bizarre animated... thing of some description... that sort-of contained Graham Chapman's life story) because "he's pissed at us." So yeah, there's animosity between Idle and the other Pythons.

Damn shame that The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus wasn't more successful, I thought it was pretty damn good. A bit pretentious, maybe, and the scene with the little kid and the DS made me want to punch things, but overall enjoyable.

Hm? Oh yes, the thing that we're actually meant to be discussing.

HOLY SHIT GLJSDFPOIUASJF AND OTHER RANDOM LETTERS MEANT TO INDICATE EXCITABLE HAMMERING ON MY KEYBOARD, YES YES YES A THOUSAND ORGASMIC TIMES YES.

No Eric Idle? Then the pretentious prick factor won't tank the movie!!! Yay!!!

To seriously comment on the Python Troupe woes and personality clashes, think about this... you've worked together for years and years, like being roomates, you tend to learn everything about the people you're around including the less-than-stellar aspects of their personalities. Business and friendship aren't things that go hand in hand. It is amazing they lasted so long in the original series and movies, because I'd figure they'd have been at each other's throats by the end (which is highly probable). I also get the sense that Graham Chapman was the anchor, the diplomat that kept them all from killing each other and with his death (and a sad thing that was) the animosity more or less broke up the troupe. Still for all the conflict they did produce some excellent material. I have faith they will produce a stellar comedy and grace us with laughter so great we might have to bring an extra pair of trousers.

wow. i thought they stopped making movies. good to see they are still kicking. im looking forward to it. lets just hope it will not suck in the end.

Well I've never clicked harder on anything in my life. Shame about Eric Idle I wonder why he wouldn't join the movie, but I suppose he has his musicals now. They wouldn't let this be crap, this and the tour seem to be the last hurrah for the Pythons and I doubt they would leave us with rubbish.

Jones gave an interview when he was plugging a book earlier this year in which he said "We are all rather pissed off at Eric". Idle had given another interview before, when he called the others "Ungrateful bastards" and ranted about money. As to the others, its difficult to give precise sources for things. I first watched python in 1989 on a BBC rerun and things have leaked out over the years. The fundamental point is that when you are working for living you have to tolerate other people in way that you don't when you have 10 million in the bank. Things that you would keep quiet about for the sake of putting food on the table you can say and that inevitably leads to clashes. Now most of them are under financial pressure for one reason or another, they have a reason to keep their mouths closed and live with the worst aspects of the others.

I didnt know I wanted this, but now that you tell me about it, I totally do.
