Rosalina and Luma Bring a New Fighting Style to Super Smash Bros.

Rosalina and Luma Bring a New Fighting Style to Super Smash Bros.

Super Mario Galaxy's Rosalina will feature as a new character with a distinct fighting style in Super Smash Bros. 3DS and Wii U.

Rosalina joins the roster of Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U, Nintendo announced during today's Nintendo Direct. Rosalina's debut is joined by her companion Luma, one of the stars she watches over in Super Mario Galaxy. A powerful being with magic, Rosalina may have a fighting style not common in Super Smash Bros.

Footage of Rosalina's reveal shows her directing Luma with her wand to fight by itself or fight in tandem with her. Rosalina acts as a puppeteer, being able to keep herself a safe distance away while using Luma to fight off foes. This has not been used in Super Smash Bros. games before, in which we have characters like the Ice Climbers who fight as a team, as Nana will do whatever Popo does. Footage also showed Rosalina redirecting Mario's F.L.U.D.D. move from Super Mario Sunshine and blocking an attack from Mega Man with Luma. The ways in which players use Luma in conjunction with Rosalina could make a huge difference in Rosalina's effectiveness in Super Smash Bros.

A month ago Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai revealed the next Smash will have a Super Mario Galaxy stage. Super Mario Galaxy was a well-received game, and a series Nintendo may revisit. In hindsight, it isn't much of a surprise that Rosalina and Luma join the fighting roster.

I like Rosalina so I'm on board with this, I hopefully her thing with the Lumas is actually a viable strategy though unlike quite a few SSB gimmick tactics.

Let's just pray her story doesn't enter into the game somehow. There's not enough room in the entire multiverse for all the feels that will be generated.

Interesting, hopefully she won't be a Princess Toadstool (that's her damn name) clone.

Wonder if Chrom or "Marth" will be in it from Fire Emblem: Awakening, I can easily see Chrom replace Ike and "Marth" be a battle skin for normal Marth.

NnnnnnnnnnNEWCOMERRRRR

And let me just say that I friggin' called it.

Anyone else not think of Ice climbers when they saw this? Just saying aside from the different move set the mirror fighting style synergy for Rosalina compared to Ice climbers is the increased distance.

Not to mention Ice Climbers haven't been confirmed for the new Smash game have they. You think Rosalina might be replacing them? I mean I wouldn't mind because I love Rosalina, but I know my friend would be pissed because his main are the Ice Climbers.

Also, Nintendo seems to really be putting Rosalina in a lot of things lately huh?

So she's like Carl or Relius from Blazblue; Rosalina's tactics are going to rely on her sandwiching her opponents between her and the Luma. The Ice Climbers were different as I don't recall them being able to use pincer maneuvers like that. Very interesting style.

The inclusion of Rosalina disappoints me greatly. Sure it is not the worst inclusion, she was pretty much the 2nd most likely Mario rep at this point but it is for that reason I dislike her inclusion. She is yet another Mario rep, which we have plenty of already in SSB even when we consider how the Yoshi, DK and Wario series are counted and represented seperately from the Mario series.

Ah well, while this worries me for remainder of the roster the inclusion of characters such as Villager and Wii Fit Trainer give me hope for it. I hope that series lacking reps, either by not having a 2nd one like Metroid or not being represented with a playable character at all like Punch-Out, will be the primary focus. Two or three not of this category shouldn't hurt so I'll leave ultimate personal judgement to when the full roster of newcomers is known.

Funny enough this was my first thought upon seeing her gameplay style. I might not like her inclusion for being another Mario rep but her playstyle is at least unique, will be either a pain to use or really fun.

If I'm not mistaken, she got shafted in SMG 2, barely gettin any screen time. Considering she's probably one of the most interesting characters to ever come from the Mario series (even if by the default of just having a semi-concrete backstory), I'm really glad she's getting more exposure. She's got a lot of potential for some interesting storylines and she seems pretty powerful.

Speaking of which, with all these new characters coming out all the time, I sometimes worry that the old characters will suffer in terms of balance as compared to the new ones.

While it's nice that we're getting some more characters in the new game, i'm also saddened by the fact there's no news on whether Snake will be in the next one...

*sniff*

Cmon guys, throw me a bone here: Don't get rid of Snake, he was my favorite character in Brawl!

At first, I thought Rosalina and Luma were new versions of the Ice Climbers. Perhaps they are a new take on a two character fighter. Would like to know if Nintendo would offer the fans a chance to play the game before it hits shelves...

Also, if someone could get Nintendo by the ear, they need to rename the latest Smash Bros game than just SSB for 3DS and WiiU. Something on the lines like Super Smash Bros Showdown or something. Plus offer more info on returning and new characters on a more regular basis wouldn't hurt.

not exactly surprised but she has the potential to be a cool character.

Now give some of your other ips some attention in smash bros please. Someone from metroid, castlevania maybe wonderfull 101 and bayonetta and all the other ones.

How good is he? I mean, I suck at smash bros but I tend to suck more when using the Ice Climbers. It seems an odd choice to main from my experience.

I liked Ike from brawl but I'm told he's terrible from tournament people so what do I know?

Meh? Never played Super Mario Galaxy, but that just looks like Princess Peach with bangs.

He's pretty good with the Ice Climbers actually, but he's not the best Brawl player. I don't think he's played Melee either, but Nana and Poe didn't have any moves changed to my knowledge during the transition to Brawl.

Meanwhile I can take on level 9 CPUs of Shiek, Fox, and Falco in Melee with freaking Kirby, but I'm absolutely shit at Brawl. >.>
I hate how much they nerfed Captain Falcon and the move changes for Kirby screwed me up a bit. Don't get me started on how badly they nerfed poor Jigglypuff

At one point I was playing brawl(melee too at one point) enough to take on the level 9s as well(though only with specific characters). I became over confident with cpu victories then had my misplaced pride smashed into humbleness by a friend who does fighting genre tournament plays.... I got lengthy lectures about basing skill on cpu wins too.

Oh, just to be clear, I'm not saying anything about your skill with the game. Your comment just reminded me of that experience.

Aw, and here I was going to recount my tales of being in Smash Melee touraments in which I'd actually hold my own pretty well. T^T
My main point is, Melee was perfect in how things were, but with Brawl the changes and nerfing of many of the characters just left a bad taste in my mouth. Especially with what they did to Jigglypuff because in Smash Bros and Melee she was good, then suddenly she became the worst character of all.
It also makes me sad when I here one person I know who only played Brawl religiously before even touching Melee and the original that he hopes that they take out what he calls "c-sticking" because it's "stupid and unfair." >.>

I always thought she looked like Peaches mom.

Someone please give this guy a medal. Nintendo is terrible at naming stuff for some reason. You would think they learned their lesson having gone from DS to 3DS or Wii to Wii U, but nooooooo:

- Super Smash Bros. (N64)
- Super Smash Bros. Melee (Gamecube)
- Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii)

Looks fine so far, then:
- Super Smash Bros. (Wii U)
for Wii U
- Super Smash Bros. (3DS)
for 3DS

Nintendo: "Wow, that looks like a great idea!"

Like you said, adding Showdown or whatever after 'Super Smash Bros.' would make complete sense looking at how the previous titles were named but making sense just isn't the Nintendo way of doing things. :D It's so simple, yet apparently so hard for Nintendo to make things right these days. I don't even want to go into detail about the "for Wii U/for 3DS part"...

On topic: I always loved Rosalina but unlike mentioned in the main article I believe it is very surprising that they insert her in the new Smash since I think that Nintendo has gotten retarded over the last few years. Looking at the naming issue mentioned above together with the awkward pacing and order they choose to release info I kind of lost faith in Nintendo's ability to make good decisions.

Rosalina is a perfect addition to the Smash rooster to the point where it's a no-brainer. She was the most interesting part of Mario Galaxy as she is essentially the story part of the game - a series where even having a story was something special, I loved those Storybook parts btw - and she is just really popular due to her design and charm. Adding her just makes sense and I can't wait to play her.

By comparison, the addition of Wii Fit Trainer and Villager seems awkward, yet, they chose them instead of Rosalina to promote the game at E3. Those 2 make for some strange fighting game material. Granted, so did Phoenix Wright in MvC3 but Phoenix Wright is - like Rosalina - a very popular character, something you can neither say about Wii Fit Trainer nor Villager. Wii Fit Trainer wasn't even a character per se before her addition to the Smash rooster, dunno about Villager but his name suggests the same. The same can be said about Mr. Game & Watch, but his unique style (2D, low amount of frames) and the retro feeling made him very likeable.

A character I would love to see in the new Smash is Isaac from Golden Sun. I think they also have the rights to the IP so I see no reason why they wouldn't add him as a genuine character. A lot of people were very disappointed when they found out that Isaac was in Brawl but only as an assist trophy.
