Nintendo believes 2014 will be another strong year for the 3DS.

Nintendo's darling of 2013 was the 3DS, the handheld that picked up steam with the launch of several successful games for the system. Today Nintendo announced more than 16 million combined packaged and digital 3DS games were sold in 2013 - a 45% increase over 2012. Hardware sales also increased, crossing lifetime sales of more than 11.5 million just in the United States.

"Nintendo 3DS is a powerhouse with games and experiences that appeal to all kinds of players," Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America sales and marketing executive vice president, said in a press release. "We're not slowing down in 2014. With more games featuring fan-favorite franchises on the way, the best days of Nintendo 3D are still to come."

Several 3DS games from 2013 reached a Metacritic score of at least 85, and two of those -- Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and Fire Emblem Awakening -- surpassed a score of 90. Other well-received games include Pokemon X and Y, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. Also launched in 2013 was the 2DS, a redesign of the 3DS without the 3D slider and clamshell design.

Nintendo believes 2014 will be strong as well, carrying on the rising numbers from last year into this year. Launching in North America soon are Bravely Default on Feb. 7, Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy on Feb. 28, and Yoshi's New Island on March 14. Kirby: Triple Deluxe is also set to launch in the second or third quarter of 2014 for the west.

Nintendo still has a lot of work to market the Wii U and boost its sales there, but many have warmed up to the 3DS after a slow start.

Let's be honest, that boost in sales was mostly down to Pokemon X & Y wasn't it?

Two big games in japan, pokemon x/y and monster hunter 4 were released in 2013. I'm not really surprised they sold so much.

But I'm guilty of purchasing a 3ds just for monster hunter 3 ultimate, fire emblem awakening, phoenyx right and hopefuly monster hunter 4

Well that's nice, but once the price drop for the 3DS hit I knew it would be fine.
What I, and many others, wanna know is what were the Wii U sales in December, as we already know that it sold 220k in November and only 77k in October.

LA LA LA I CANT HEAR YOU

NINTENDO IS DOOMED

LA LA LA

I'd say with great confidence that a fair chunk of that was due to Pokemon X & Y.

what ? the gif isn't in the thread yet...

i am disappoint

still 45%...that's some spicy meatballs...

Said every analyst trying to sound smart EVER. Maybe I wouldn't mind so much if there was actually some logic to said comments other than wishful thinking. And that's before I get into how they conveniently gloss over ANY accomplishment Nintendo makes as well as conveniently forgetting the 3DS even exists. But then again, too many analysts and devs in the West have convinced themselves that handheld gaming just isn't as sexy and exciting as console gaming is (even though console gaming has been turned into a giant money black hole.) At this rate the only way people are going to stop predicting "Nintendoom" is if Sony and MS BOTH drop out of consoles. And even then I wouldn't be surprised if they switch their focus to PCs if that happened.

Still praying for Monster Hunter 4 to be released here, but the 3DS has been absolutely amazing to me. It's managed to rekindle my love of JRPGs... which I now must spend more money on.

If the only avenue for gaming left were mobile and facebook games, then MAYBE the dudebro culture of gaming would lower itself to recognize Nintendo again. Maybe.

No, people would just make even MORE excuses, whether it be analysts, gamers, or publishers. I just don't GET why this obsession against Nintendo still exists. It seems that WAY too many entities have this weird, illogical stiffy for hoping that Nintendo fails. It's honestly kinda disturbing

I chalk it up to men's constant battle for masculinity. Nintendo games are things that they associate with childishness, probably because they played them as kids, so to help assert their masculinity in one of the most desperate ways possible, they reject those things they associate with childishness.

The only reason I say they might trump social/mobile gaming is that those things are associated with femininity by the dudebro gaming culture, and if there's one thing insecure males fear more than being labelled a child, it's being labelled a woman.
