Grand Theft Auto Online Cheaters Face Crackdown

Grand Theft Auto Online Cheaters Face Crackdown

Rockstar says Grand Theft Auto Online players who have actively cheated to generate in-game funds will face sanctions that could include being banned from the game outright.

Every online is going to run into trouble with cheating sooner or later, even Rockstar's long-awaited Grand Theft Auto Online. An exploit to generate "game-breaking amounts of in-game cash" has apparently been making the rounds lately, but Rockstar used today's maintenance period to remove the counterfeit funds and issued a dire warning to those involved in its manufacture.

"Anyone who innocently received GTA$ as result of these exploits but did not engage in cheating to acquire it will not face any further action - the funds will just be removed, and you'll be able to keep any items you currently own," Rockstar wrote. "Those who actively engaged in cheating and exploiting the game in this manner will, however, be subject to in-game penalties at our discretion. This may include being place in isolated cheater pools or banned from GTA Online altogether."

In an FAQ, Rockstar clarified that while items purchased with duped funds by non-cheaters won't be taken away, their cash value will be removed, even if it means leaving account balances after the adjustment lower than they were before receipt of the counterfeit cash. It also said that it could tell the difference between cheaters and those who simply received counterfeit funds through no fault of their own "automatically through gameplay data," but even so, you might want to keep one hand on your wallet for awhile, just in case something goes wrong.

I suppose that's one way of not having to buy additional servers.

Dev 1 "We have to many people trying to play our game"

Dev 2 "hmm, I know ban the longer serving players for playing the game they bought and not doing it in a linear fashion like how we want them too"

Dev 1 "genius"

Yeah the idea of being banned from using stuff you paid for pisses me off especially when it's for stuff you don't get to know about till after you've bought the item.

I haven't played since about two weeks after GTAO launched and I had to cheat to get money to pay for a bunch of the bullshit they have in the game

oh, you have NO REPERCUSSIONS for killing players, but if you defend yourself by blowing up their car, obviously you are a cheating fuck and deserve to not play with your friends for a day.

wait, fuck that, a week, because we cant code worth a fuck.

honestly Rockstar fucked GTAO the day it launched, I'm actually sad that it comes with GTA V to be honest. it's like a cancer that there is no treatment for.

I hate the people who complains about Bad Sport. Because we sadly need Bad Sport punishment, it prevents people with tanks, or jets from ruining other peoples fun.
But, Rockstar removed most of it, yes, you can be as assholes as you want now, you can ram with your Tanks and Jets and you can blow like a dozen of cars before being punished, or receive no punish at all if the enemy also shots you (wich tbh is hard to not to happen).
So you kind of won... so i wonder why the people up here is complaining.. didnt they got the news??

Anyway, the money cheaters punishment is good news, and i trust R* will keep tweaking the Bad Sport rules and dont go full retard by allowing the people up here to do whatever they want. Sorry guys.

While I oppose Rockstar's attempts to nerf anything fun in the game since day 1, I don't think "don't cheat" is all that unreasonable a rule.

Maybe not. A lot of people haven't played of late. However, I think you're missing why people were bitching about the bad sport deal in the first place.

I mean, you could camp someone until the cows came home and basically going around making their experience shit. You could basically bully and harass players, but don't you dare blow up their car even by accident. What about that sounds like smart policy? How does that make sense?

On top of which, you could already not get penalised for blowing up cars, so I don't really see how that's at issue. You'd think an automated system would be less terrible at enforcing punishments, but noooooo...Some people were already destroying personal vehicles left and right without getting smacked.

If anything, it looks more like Rockstar being passive-aggressive than the "complainers" getting their way.

They need to really lock this down, if the players can get in game money really easily, there will be no need to spend real money to buy in game money.

I'm glad for this, thanks to someone with a bugged bounty I killed once, I ended up getting 1 Billion dollars but as I'm only level 40, I don't have much to spend it on :(

So rockstar is sending in their army of genetically modified, super strong, good at aiming, great at driving, and super agile super cops?

Eh, whatever works I suppose.

I'm kind of surprised at the amount of complaints about this. I haven't had a chance to play with any friends, so I haven't encountered any problems with the bad sport system. But yeah, it does sound stupid that the act of simply blowing up someone's car gets you bad sport status, I'll give you that.

But the money thing? All I know is there's a load of people running around powerful as all fuck. Nigh invincible with the most powerful weapons and a seemingly limitless supply of ammo. And on the other side, there's me, taking on what jobs I can (considering my lack of friends playing GTAonline or a decent crew, this is limited) and robbing stores to try and inch up the ranks, and whilst that in itself demonstrates a problem with GTAonline, that lone wolf players may find themselves making achingly slow progress, it doesn't justify cheating.

I never really understood why it was seen as okay for banning people who use exploits found in the game itself. You aren't using any outside modification software and your not messing with the game files, your just exploiting something that was the devs did not have the foresight to fix before launch.

Sure, patch the problem when you learn about it but don't go around calling people "cheaters" and banning them from the game they paid for because of you overlooked a bug.
