Cosplay: Princess Merida from Brave Makes Out with A Live Grizzly Bear

Tina Rybakova, an extreme cosplayer from Moscow, teamed up with a grizzly bear for her latest photo shoot.

The word dedication is often overused when discussing cosplay. Creating the perfect costume definitely takes time and an intense kind of single-mindedness, but not many cosplayers actually risk their lives for the craft. However, Tina Rybakova is not your average cosplayer.

Dasha Kond is the Moscow-based photographer who was behind the lens. Kond often utilizes animals, but they're typically harmless creatures like llamas, camels, and chihuahuas. For his latest shoot, though, Mr. Kond recruited a Ussuri brown bear, also known as a black grizzly.

Obviously, the bear had undergone some kind of training/brainwashing (otherwise this article would have labeled "NSFW/GORE"), but letting a thousand pound bear lick your face in the name of cosplay takes nerves of steel.

Rybakova is allegedly portraying Princess Merida, the tomboy protagonist from Disney's Brave. But I don't remember Merida owning many leather bikinis, and she definitely preferred the bow to the broadsword. So, it feels like this shoot may have just been an excuse to put an attractive redhead next to a dangerous animal.

Either way, despite the bikini, she's far more manly than I will ever be.

I have to wonder... if this is supposed to be Princess Merida, is the bear supposed to be her cursed mother? And if so, could this technically be one of the oddest pictures of mother/daughter pseudo-incest cosplay? Because if it's supposed to be Mor'du, then it's even weirder... if that's possible.

You know, just asking questions here.

Yeah, besides the red hair, and the bear, I don't really see how this is suppose to be Merida. She doesn't even have a bow or arrows in this.

<_< Also; How did they get the bear to lick her face?

Are we sure this isn't Red Sonja? Because based on that picture alone Red Sonja seems far, far more likely than Merida.

altogether now A bear, A BEAR!

The Bear, the Bear and the Maiden Fair
The Bear, the Bear and the Maiden Fair

That's all, folks.

Would this seem less weird if I had actually seen brave? I also have trouble believing that the main character of Brave ever dresses like that in the movie.

This is the internet. Whatever questions you just asked, the most obvious answer is "Yes".

No, I've seen Brave and this is... weird. I mean it has a lot to do with bears sure but this is weird.

Also Merida is a teenage who only wears dresses, so this... yeah it's still weird.

Nope, as some guy speculated above, it actually gets weirder if you've seen Brave, since the only two bears in the movie are the Big Bad and her mother.

Maybe her mother is giving her a kiss goodnight......

.... Yeah I didn't believe that either. Great movie but this cosplay has next to no connection. The costume and scene are beautiful.

^This. And the bear is the mother too so...uhm..yeah

>_>

oh dear..

The preparation included slapping her in the face with a dead salmon. It was rather unhot.

Is this really news worthy? Maybe if she actually wore Merida dress, but it's just a cosplay shoot. With a bear.

I get it. Thats just some easy, boob covered click-bait.

From there to here, from here to there
All black and brown and covered in hair.
Smelled that girl on the summer air
The bear, the bear, the maiden fair.

Didn't notice the source of the article, I take it?

It's from Kotaku. That should tell you all you need to know.

The better question is....why is it here? I had originally considered The Escapist to be somewhat above the level of juvenile Kotaku journalism, but apparently I was mistaken. There's zero ties to gaming, and the ties to Merida are very, very arguable (in that it pretty much looks nothing like a Merida cosplay at all, hell, if anything I'd have guessed Zena first). So I'm not sure why this article exists here at all.

Would any of the Escapist staff here care to elaborate on why this is here?

Falterfire:

Scottish Red Sonja? ...That could be interesting.

I was thinking it was a skyrim cosplay.

I'm going to assume that this was just misreported by someone who has no clue what Brave is.
*checks site*
... or not. Honestly, aside from the lick-on-the-lips and the costume, the majority of the shots look like they... sorta fit, anyway.

I wouldn't describe llamas as harmless. Well, neither would you if you work with the ones I do. One of them is evil incarnate, and the only one that is cool as hell is a Guanaco.

thisbymaster:

Dovahbear and his companion? About to head to the Temple of Mara?

Well, obligatory Bears video.

Anyway, I've never seen Brave. So, I can't say whether this works or not. But from the pictures I've seen of Brave, yeah, it doesn't really make my mind jump to that movie.

Merida, Schmerida. I know Red Sonya when I see her, so let's all gawk at Red Sonya kissing a bear's tongue as it's licking her face.

I'll be in my bunk.

merida who? this woman is fine as hell! and tough to boot.:)

Well, that's probably the worst Brave cosplay that could ever exist. Thanks for posting it.. ish?

Well, darn. I can't beat that.

Kudos.

Whelp. THat is the second stupidest thing I have seen today.

I can't believe how many people are bashing the picture.

This girl has a real live bear licking her face!! That's dedication to cosplaying even if she doesn't look exactly like the character she is portraying. Then again, it could be her future self or just her wearing... armor with ... not much else. All well, I think it's an incredible shot.

The day I see a picture of Aqua Man, Kisame, or some character related to water taking a shot with a shark would earn much respects from me in terms of the ultimate dedication to cosplaying.

Their image of Meridia is very different from the one I have in my head.

Having said that, I am impressed with her ability to stay calm in close proximity to a bear wearing nothing but a bikini.

An excellent point... Creepy.

Still, props to her for being brave(stupid?) enough to get that uh... personal with a bear. I certainly wouldn't.

Here's the thing, though: she doesn't look anything like the character she claims to be.

Outside of the fact that they both have red hair....this cosplay shares absolutely no features in common with the character it's supposed to portray. And she doesn't even get the hair quite right because it's styled completely differently, and Merida's hair is far lighter in shade.

This is just some girl in a leather bikini kissing a bear. Which is fine if she's into that sort of thing, but that's not a Merida cosplay. As I said before, it's closer to Xena than to Merida. That's what most people take issue with. Just because she's kissing a bear doesn't mean she gets to claim that she's cosplaying a character she looks absolutely nothing like.

That's like giving Taylor Swift a pass on "Love Story" despite how it's relatively obvious she has no idea how the story of Romeo and Juliet goes (pro-tip: it's a tragedy, not a romance), or what the definition of "scarlet letter" is....because, hey, Kanye West interrupted her that one time on stage, and that was so embarrassing that she gets a pass on everything she does, ever. Yes, some people do think that way. >_>

Well, that and the fact that this article is obvious Kotaku-style click-bait that really doesn't belong on this site.

Oh, I noticed it alright.

But why sourcing Kotaku though? Since when is Kotaku a reliable source of information? And this isn't gaming, tech or geek culture related, as far as I'm aware, so why is it here?

Man, I was rather boringly thinking they must have painted her face with honey or something but your way is SOOOO much better.
I'm keeping it, you win.

You people are getting way way to picky about your Disney themed Bear Porn.

It isn't really supposed to be Merida from Brave, per se. This company does photoshoots with live animals, and then gives the set a title that's vaguely related. For example, pictures with a deer = "Patronus" Which is apparently a Harry Potter reference or something.
