Pachter: Disc-Free Xbox One Would Be "Dumb Dumb Dumb"

Michael Pachter

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter doesn't believe the rumors of a disc-less Xbox One and if it's true, thinks it would be "one of the dumbest ideas of all time."

Yesterday, news broke out that Microsoft is said to be testing and considering a disc-less version of the Xbox One that will be sold at a cheaper price point. While some people might think that's a good idea, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter isn't one of them. The analyst says he doesn't believe the rumor and if it's true, it would be "one of the dumbest ideas of all time."

I don't actually believe the rumor. If this rumor is true, it is one of the dumbest ideas of all time. It would alienate GameStop and other retailers, and it would demonstrate that Microsoft can afford to release a 1TB Xbox One at $399 with essentially the same production cost as the $499 model with a 500GB HDD and a Blu-ray drive...That would likely cause gamers to believe that the model with a Blu-ray drive is overpriced, or would cause them to believe that Microsoft is greedy...I have three words for this idea - dumb, dumb, dumb.

Could Pachter have a point? Would Microsoft releasing a disc-less version of the Xbox One do more harm than good even at a lower entry point?

Earlier this month, Pachter pegged the PlayStation 4 to triumph over the Xbox One and also thinks Nintendo should consider "getting out of the Wii U business."

It's ridiculous, isn't it? He could say the sky was up and I'd have trouble buying it. Him saying this is a dumb idea suddenly makes me want a discless xbox one, even though games on discs have always been cheaper than through console digital stores ...

They should instead consider a version without kinect which would pretty much print money.

You know I now believe the rumours even more. I mean considering what Microsoft has done with the XBox One "Dumb, dumb, dumb" sums it up pretty well actually.

As soon as I read the article, I had to look outside and make sure it wasn't raining gravy and biscuits.

But, uh.....yeah. Every dog has his day and apparently Mr. Pacther's day is today.

Well done Mr Pachter, you've finally said something we can all agree with.

Stopped clock is right twice a day.

Of course it is, the internet infrastructure simply isn't there yet to make this viable.

I wish I could have a job where all I had to do was just state the obvious, and if I get things completely off base it doesn't matter anyway.

I dunno... I think it's pretty unlikely that he'll be right a second time...

I agree, because it takes away something from the entire idea of the Xbox One. It is being sold as an "all in one" machine for your living room. So what good is it if your entire DVD/Blu-Ray collection cannot be used by it? What about CD's? Digital music may be slowly wiping physical copies out, but that doesn't mean people are going to throw away the collections they already have.

The Xbox 360 didn't have a Blu-Ray drive and that was a downside. Taking it away from the newer version that is capable of having one just seems bizarre. Especially considering the issues regarding the always online debate.

The world may be slowly heading towards digital media for everything, but it's not ready for it yet. I simply cannot see it doing well enough to justify the manufacturing.

A Kinect-free version for $100 less is what people want. That'd make sense.

I've already refuted several of Pachter's previous oracle readings and he clearly has an anti-Microsoft bias.

While I agree that a disc-less XBone would not sell well, it's hardly "one of the dumbest ideas of all time."

Pachter continues to put the "anal" in "analyst" by talking out his ass.

I think it really goes to show how stubborn Microsoft are that they would rather release a diskless version of their console than a Kinectless one.

Goes without saying that it's a fucking awful idea but since it's how they originally wanted the Xbox One to be like, it's not surprising that they would do yet another 180 and go back to it.

I still use my disk drive for the PC, not often, but I do still use it for things.

In a complete vacuum, the idea is really interesting. This'd let Microsoft go ahead and test out more of their original vision of the XBone while still letting people who don't like it get the disc'ed version. This absolutely has no direct impact on customers so it doesn't seem bad, but as Pachter very politely points out, perception is everything and comparing the two definitely begs a few questions. I don't give two sh!ts about the 'console war' so I say let the guys experiment, it'd be neat to see how it does.

Pachter says there wont be a disc-less Xboner?? WELL, THEN THERE WILL BE A DISC-LESS XBONER!

Well duh, the pre-launch debacle proved that. Pachter's always wrong unless he's blatantly right.

Kinectless 400$ version is still optimal IMO.

i don't know if i necessarily agree that there won't be one, but i'd agree that it would be dumb. not for microsoft, but for anybody who buys it. they would spend so much more in the long run by being restricted by microsofts digital prices which are out of touch with the disc versions. also it destroys any chance of trade-ins (although i don't know if they're already restricted on next gen consoles, i didn't keep up to date with it)

One of the dumbest ideas of all time eh?

That seems perfectly in character for anything Microsoft does involving the xbone, so I reckon Pachter might be wrong once again.

That's because all he does is read gaming forums and then presents the majority opinion as his own thoughts and analysis.

An xbox one that didn't have a disc drive would be exceptionally retarded with only a 500 gig HD. But with the proper infrastructure and such it is very viable. Hell I've not used a disc in ages.

So, I can save $100 and install games using the external USB Blu-Ray drive I already own? Sweet!

Except, of course, that it won't actually work because Microsoft.

People are suckers for lower prices. It's tempting, and it might give people who are skeptical about the Kinect an excuse to try it out. (After all, that lower price is what people were saying they were willing to pay for a One without a Kinect.)

Maybe Microsoft is trying to pull focus from the idea of the forthcoming Steam console. Seems like doing that would only invite unfavorable comparisons, but they've got to address the competition somehow.

--Morology!

PS: Oh, and if there's an all-digital console, be prepared for a return of all the same DRM and borrowin stuff people got upset about after that first launch announcement.

He's right, this is "dumb, dumb, dumb", but that doesn't mean MS won't do it.

P.S. Thanks

Tell em about it Patcher! I love this guy. Never understood the hate. He seems mostly pro-consumer and while he is not always right, I never feel like he is being dishonest. Is it because he says things that upset fanboys?

That is what he government wants you to believe, you have been brainwashed! Wake up people!

Moving on, Pachter is completely correct on this, although I think general consensus on a disc-free Xbone would be negative.

Huh, agreeing with Pachter, wasn't so hard, feels kinda refreshing...

Huh, Pachter us still dressing up as legendary super hero Captain Obvious, and Microsoft is rumored to be doing another stupid as balls business decision. It's business as usual.

Feel free to correct me, but wasn't the download-only XBONE one of the originally two models that got scrapped after the overwhelmingly negative public response?

Isn't this the guy who predicted the PC would be dead and would shrink to obscurity in a sea of strategy games?

I like the Xbox One. (you may all not hate me for saying it)
I just wish MS would get off their lazy bums and fix a lot of the dashboard stuff.

Game invites (you want to invite a friend to your game? start a party with them. You want to be in a party without spamming game invites to everyone involved? You can't.)

Party chat (see above)

Not being able to access your hard drive (seriously? I need that. Demos still sit on my XBO even though I'm not using them. Stop treating me like I'm an imbecile and computer illiterate.)

Even more strict open nat (didn't figure that one out on the 360.)

That being said, those are about my only gripes. I still plan on getting the PS4 and Wii U. Then I will let the company rivalry play to my favor. Hey.. Just had a thought. If everyone did that, then wouldn't we just be getting better games?

OT I like not having a disc tray. That was the main problem of the 360 in terms of over heating. That said, there aren't really any games out that I want to play right now anyway. I have Zoo Tycoon, which is good for a laugh every so often.

Wake me when Mass Effect comes out.

I will say I vastly prefer digital, and would probably buy a disc-less XBone over the more pricey one if I ever had a reason to actually purchase one.

The "reason to get one" is the big sticking point right now.

For a second there, I thought that white stuff was something else. XD

Allow me to add a couple of more "Dumbs" in to the mix there Patcher, if they seriously go that rout instead of just having an X1 that drops the Kinect, hell even the DVR function, then they're just asking for it imo. It may be able to work for a steambox, but that thing has years of build up to support it, MS.....you do not.

If Microsoft actually dropped the prices of their digital content to match the prices of the physical games you find in stores, this would have a chance of working out. More so if they just dropped $5 off the retail price of each game from the get-go. Of course, they won't do this though

It also totally defeats the purpose of their "all in one" media center they tried to advertise the XOne as though, since it would not be able to play the CD/DVD/BluRay discs people already own.

Plus, people would then just be clamoring for a Kinect-less bundle for $299.

I agree with Pachter's statement, but not his reasoning. Retailers would still see Xbox points, or whatever the hell they are doing now, and people could buy codes in stores for game downloads, so that still leaves plenty of options for retailers. Additionally, MS is probably taking a loss on the console anyway, so I think most people already assume it is overpriced. And everyone already knows MS is greedy. That is nothing new. If MS is willing to lose even more money per console, that's on them, but would just be another reason it's a stupid idea.

Given that a cheaper One would actually be better released as is but without the packed in Kinect, and the fact that Blu Ray sized games are just way too big for most people to download, I'd say he's right. It would be a very stupid idea. Download only works on portables and PC because the average game size is a lot smaller. It just wouldn't work on a console yet.

Fuck, now Microsoft's gonna go through with it after all. And everyone will buy it. And consumer rights will be crushed under the iron thumb of an indifferent AAA industry.

PATCHER HAS DOOMED US ALL
