Oculus VR Stops Making Developer Kits Due to Component Shortage

And there's no timeline on when production will resume.

Oculus Rift Developer Kit

Virtual reality wunderkind Oculus VR has halted production on its Rift VR developer kit. Citing component shortages, Oculus says the Rift is available for purchase for as long as warehouse stockpiles last.

A post by Oculus VR Community Manager Andres Hernandez in the Oculus sub-reddit confirmed the stoppage, as Oculus does not "...have the necessary materials to produce additional kits."

"We are looking into alternate sources for the needed components, and we don't yet have a timeline for when additional units will be available," said Hernandez. "As we sell out of inventory in each region we plan to suspend sales in that region until we are able to deliver new orders."

The developer kit order page still lists the Rift as available in the US, although it's not clear how long supplies will last.

The shortage could, in theory, lead to a new, more robust developer kit. Naturally that depends on whether or not Oculus wants to update the hardware, but with the Crystal Cove prototype making the rounds at CES, an updated developer platform is not outside the realm of possibility.

a good sign something is really really good is when the dev kits before the product even comes out has run out of parts to make more.
that is even better then selling them all.

Well, that doesn't bode well for the consumer at all, now does it. They have been putting dev kits out for a while now, and the unit is not even finalized for the consumer model. Should prove an interesting future.

maybe you could... i duno, finish a consumer model then, i would really just be happy with a model with a higher rez screen.

So much hype for developing software that works on hardware that isn't in the consumer market yet.
