Kojima Worried MGSV: The Phantom Pain "Too Big" for Players to Finish

The Phantom Pain

Hideo Kojima claims The Phantom Pain has "the risk" that gamers won't be able to finish it, since it's "more than 200x bigger" than Ground Zeroes

Following the controversy that Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes will be just a two-hour game, it seems Metal Gear Solid fans won't need to worry about the length for MGSV's main course -- The Phantom Pain, at least, if series creator Hideo Kojima is to be believed. According to the game director, for The Phantom Pain, he's worried "players will start complaining that they can't clear the game, [it's] too big to clear." Kojima adds, "The Phantom Pain has the risk that people won't be able to finish the story as it will be "more than 200x bigger than Ground Zeroes." Unfortunately, he couldn't disclose just how many missions The Phantom Pain will have, only stating, "but we'll have a lot of missions in there."

With Kojima defending Ground Zeroes' length by citing its re-playability and "freedom of approach" as counterarguments to critics, let's hope The Phantom Pain's 200x increase means that even played without side-missions, it will take longer than most movies to complete.

Metal Gear Solid V's prologue, Ground Zeroes, will hit current and next-gen consoles on March 18, but only the PS4 version will run at 1080p resolution, with the Xbox One version only managing 720p. The Phantom Pain, which is the main game, will also hit current and next-gen consoles, but at a still unspecified date.

If something is 200 times bigger, that is not a "200% increase". Math, how does that work?

That's a weird thing to be worried about. If the game is good enough, people will want to go back to it over and over again. It doesn't matter how big or small your game is, if it's boring people won't finish it.

Sorry bout that. Meant to press "x" and for some reason, chose "%" instead. xD Amended.

Well, I think it's more of a "Hey, our games has TONS of content" thing instead of an actual concern since Ground Zeroes is reportedly just a few hours long. Personally, I'm fine with playing a short game that's fun, compared to a game that does offer tens of hours of play but is as boring as watching water boil.

If MGSV wants me to grind for better gear like Peace Walker did, you bet your ass I won't be finishing it.

Dont know wwhat hes worried about. Witcher 3 suposedly has a 50 hour main storyline... and an additional 50 hours worth of sidequests.

This might slow down Big Boss Emblems, depending on length of strictly story content. Seeing as gamers finished the 10-hour movie known as Guns of the Patriots, they will finish this too. Unless it has 200 hours of cutscenes.

So has Kojima hit full Molyneux on this one, or is this his normal level of hype?

Next thing he says will be how he is afraid that all other games wont live up to the quality of this one, ruining all gaming for everyone. He cares about us, you know? He is always so worried that his game might be too good for us.

200 times bigger than Ground Zeros, so 400 hours. Just how many discs will the movie game be shipping on? It's discouraging to see Kojima going in to full spin mode to try and get people interested in the game after they have concerns. As others have said, he's delving in to Molyneux territory.

News prediction for tomorrow: Kojima confident MGSV: The Phantom Pain will deliver explosive orgasms to all

It's just Kojima being Kojima really

I hate you for saying this before me.

Ahh screw Kojima, i dunno why he doesn just go back to making fun games like the original Metalgear games upto and including the PS1 game, instead of deliberatly screwing around with his fanbase

This is assuming of course some missions do not just repeat in the areas you worked in previously.

You've just reminded me of how I was one minute past the deadline for getting the Big Boss emblem in MGS4 thanks to an unskippable cut-scene and now I'm crying.

Getting quite a few Kojima articles lately: he seems quite determined to fully convince us all that The Zero Phantoms of Ghostly Ground up Metal Gears is going to be worth the price. I admit I've not been keeping up in detail but from what I do know, I'm interested. Even if David Hayter isn't involved.

i will purchase one of his games when he employs someone who speaks english to name them

...let me get this straight. Ground Zeroes is essentially a tutorial to Phantom Pain (I heard this at some point in an article on here). And Kojima is worried that in the Metal Geat universe, people are going to be hesitant to play his game through (these are people who manage to know the ridiculous timeline) because it is 200 times longer than a tutorial. I don't get it.

200x Bigger.... now just how much of this 'bigger' is gameplay and how much is cut scenes?

Knowing MGS like I do it's probably the later...seriously.. hideo, go to film school and go work for a movie studio already... God.

Frankly I don't think he needs to be concerned that gamers who buy the game won't finish the game for that really is something beyond their control, what they should worry about the is how the people that might buy their game views the comments they are making about it.

Right now for me it feels lot like they are trying to make more money then anything else by openly admitting they are cutting the tutorial out of one game and charging it for separately. Now one way to fix that impression I am getting is to charge less for both games.

If you skip all the cut scences you can complete the game in 20 hours. :-)

What he means is the cutscenes are so full of useless exposition that could be shrunk down that people will get bored before getting close to finishing the game.

So this guy has apparently never heard of Skyrim, Fallout 3, Oblivion or Fallout New Vegas. Each of those is easily 100+ hours long, and he is worried about a game that takes slightly longer to complete than a movie?

He's actually probably talking about 100% completion specifically. If anyone has ever gone for 100% completion in a JRPG like Final Fantasy 10, they'll know why this doesn't really mean much. See the game itself is 30 hours at most if you really sit down and do all the side quests, but trying for 100% completion is incredibly frustrating because it's set up arbitrary and weird and very typically takes multiple play throughs for even a decent chance too do it. It's not fun, it's annoying, and unlike a game like Skyrim it doesn't mean the game is bigger, just that it takes longer to do things, which isn't the same thing.

Not to mention various paradox games which will easily have people rack up so many hours it isn't funny...

In fairness, Japan is fairly insular. Maybe he HASN'T heard of those.

On the other hand, there are tons and tons of JRPGs with that kind of depth.

Kojima's just making the usual Molyneux-style head-up-the-ass and promise the moon claims.

SonOfVoorhees:

Divide that by five and you're closer.

If it's good, those 100+ hours will fly by.

If it's bad, you'll feel every last single minute... and consider what else you could be playing instead.

Wow Peter Molyneux much Kojima?

I don't think he has to worry unless he has some sort of shit fast travel system like Dragons Dogma did.

Kojima, if I can finish Chrono Cross with all characters unlocked, I can finish whatever you can dish out.
(holy shit is that game padded)

Geez he's been spouting out a whole lot of wank recently.....

Adam Jensen:

So what you're saying is that it's not the size that counts, it's what you do with it? *drum rimshot* :P

OT: Soooooooo...I'm going to ask the obvious question: does Kojima honestly expect us to believe that he's made a 400 hour game or is he just blowing exaggerations out of his ass? Because god damn...I didn't even put 400 hours into Skyrim. The only game that I know I've put 400 hours into is FFT (the real one for the original PS, not this War of the Lions business), and that's because I had gotten multiple play-throughs to read 99'99'99.

The real question is whether or not Kojima will take any crap when it turns out this is just your average 15-20 hour title. :P

Atmos Duality:

Agreed, it is padded up the wazoo. Let me try a similar statement to yours:
Kojima, if I can beat Shadow the Hedgehog 100% with all the Keys and A ranks on the missions, then I can finish anything you can dish out good sir. XD

On reflection...I wasted way too much time on that really bad game... >.>

Oh hell, I forgot Ground Zeroes was so soon. I'll wait until after I've played that to decide if I want to 100% The Phantom Pain.

I seem to recall our good friend Peter saying the same sort of things about Fable, bless his little cotton socks.

Looks like you got it.

I honestly hope the new MGS will sweep me off my feet like all the previous games in the saga did, but I am worried that this one, this new episode here, will be the episode in which Metal Gear will finally jump the shark, and turn from masterpiece to crap. As foretold by the ancient prophecy!

They are giving me too much for my money, damn it. Cut something, sell me crap as DLC, leave something for a sequel...
Fucking devs, man, they'll spoil the hell out of us.
