Bear Simulator Will Be a Bear-Centric "mini-Skyrim"

Farjay Studios hopes to raise $29,500 to finish its game Bear Simulator.

If Goat Simulator was any indicator, the video game industry is currently afflicted with a lack of animal simulation games that very much needs to be rectified. That in mind, let's talk about Bear Simulator.

The debut project of new developer Farjay Studios, Bear Simulator aims, as its title would suggest, to drop players into the shoes of a bear. Whereas Goat Simulator was perhaps a bit more liberal with its interpretation of what goats actually do however, Bear Simulator intends to play things a bit more straight and give players a "somewhat realistic bear simulation."

What this will entail is first person gameplay that includes a melee fighting system, a ton of exploration and secrets and "unlockable bear abilities." According to Farjay, the game will also include mountain goats which will apparently be "an extremely important feature." Put succinctly, "it's like a mini-Skyrim but you're a bear."

If that sounds all appealing to you, head over to the game's Kickstarter page and take a closer look. It's only been a few days, but the game has already raised more than half of its $29,500 goal. Just watching the accompanying trailer, it's not hard to see why. Suffice it to say that I look forward to swatting pigs, chasing helpless bunny rabbits and stealing honey.

*insert Robocop line about purchasing something*

Sounds neat, though I do wonder what "unlockable bear abilities" means. I want my bear to be able to stun-lock wolf packs and be able to go into stealth-mode to gank mountain lions. :3

Seriously though, what are they talking about? "Congrats! Your bear can now scratch its back against a tree!" :P

Well.... glad to see some creative ideas I guess.

Here's hoping you can unlock an ability to roll in mud and imitate a rain cloud to trick bees.

This just make me think of the 'Skyrim: Bear' and 'Dovahbear' videos on YouTube.

Oh I'm TOTALLY spec'ing in "Getting My Head Caught In A Honey Jar".

I'll also put some points into acid resistance

must have bear waving before i'd even consider it a purchase...

So... I can finally play as...

If When this gets funded, I'm putting it on my wish list. Nothing makes me rub my hands and laugh maniacally more than the prospect of being a bear out to eat environmentalists.

Apologizes for the second post but...

bwahahaha, that twitter feed amuses me.

This is going to be nice. and nice to see some innovation finally. lets hope its not going to be that wolverine game again (im talking about guise of the wolf). ANd internet certainly loves strange simulators. Though i feel like this could just be a mod for skyrim.

While I find this most entertaining, I am still puzzling why there is no coverage of the Frog Fractions 2 kickstarter.

in any case, i look forward to the relevance of goats

Backed! This looks like it could be a total laugh.

I like the idea that you're not the biggest bad in the forest.

It doesn't look all that great to me. But this article did remind me of this

"Like Skyrim with Bears"? Look what Farcry marketing started. Now they're going to call the next GTA "Skyrim with hookers." For shame.

OT: Now I actually do get to run around and punch people with my bear hands.

Will you be able to unlock bear outfits? Can you play as Yogi or Pooh? What about Kung-Fu Panda? Are there different levels with different environments? Can you replicate the Polar Bear on the Lost island?

I can hardly bear not having this in my collection.

I agree; the thought is simply grizzly.

That is the first thing that came to mind when I read this. We can only hope that "unlockale bear abilities" includes a thu'um.

Someone notify Stephen Colbert.

We've got to put a stop to this terrorist training software!

So...a bear that walks on two legs? If it's realistic does that mean you spend half the game asleep?

Also, does the player get to maul park goers and steal picnic baskets?

Well, I don't often say this but: Shut up and take my money.

I think this could be just a fabulous game...

This looks absurdly like My Kind Of Thing. An exploration based game where you bumble around being a goofy, videogamey bear and eating everything? And you fight bigfoot? And there's some sort of mysterious, mystical bear lodge? Count me in.

I can Bearly contain my enthousiasm

Just imagine the pitch for this. Jim: "Hey guys we want to make a game in which you play a bear that roams the forest. No story really you just do bear stuff". Rich man in suit: "What are you crazy Jim! We can't keep putting out your crazy ideas!" Jim: "oh but its a simulator." Rich man in suit: " By god Jim you are a genius! I want it on the front page of steam by the end of the week!"

Why do we love random simulators so much?

Bear puns. Honey, we got a lot of them.

Why do people like rocky horror picture show, MST3K, and rifftrax so much?

Yeah, this is basically that kind of thing. We like them so much because they are simply chock full of delicious comedic material and it's good fun to laugh at them.

...I think the analogy to "Skyrim" might have been an unfortunate one. I'm trying to remember what I did to the last, oh, sixty or so bears I killed in "Skyrim". I think most of them met a fate involving the repeated application of about two bazillion volts of electricity. (Thanks, destruction magic! I regret ever calling you "useless".)

Anyway, after that, I cut off their skins to make clothing, and their claws to make potions. Because apparently multiple lightning strikes do no damage to bearskin at all.

Joking aside though, I wouldn't say this was an "interesting" concept per se, but I'd be curious about how the finished game turned out.

I have to be perfectly honest... I really did want this. Like, exactly this. I was hoping a Skyrim mod would appear after the whole Dovabear craze, but none did. A stand alone game? You bet I'll be backing this.

My only question though... Can bears actually strafe?

So exactly like Skyrim, but without the dragons, annoying vampires, retarded Thieves Guild, even more retarded Assassins Guild, poorly developed factions who need their heads knocked together, totally-not-zombies, or the stereotypical old men on the mountain. Not even a single giant or mammoth.

In other words absolutely nothing like Skyrim.

Welp, can't fight them, join them. I hear mountaineers are very nutritious.

Strange, neither was the discription. :3

(Jokes aside, jokes aside)

No. Putin just got a new mount.
