YouTube Blocked in Turkey Ahead of Elections

One week after blocking access to Twitter in Turkey and three days ahead of local elections, Turkey has blocked YouTube.

Access to YouTube in Turkey has just been blocked by Turkey's telecommunications authority (TIB) as "an administrative measure" to leaked recordings of Turkish officials. TIB instituted the block just hours after the recording was published to YouTube.

TIB similarly prevented access to Twitter in Turkey a week ago. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said before that YouTube would be blocked if it did not abide by Turkey's laws. Other social media sites could also see access restricted or blocked. A court in the capital, Ankara, ordered TIB to lift the ban on Twitter, but the order may not take effect for a few weeks.

Social media have helped expose political struggles and corruption. The leaked video to YouTube published today reportedly captured a conversation in which Turkey's foreign minister, spy chief, and a top general discussed scenarios that could lead to an attack against Syrian militants. Reuters news agency examined the recording and could not verify its authenticity but noted it was the most damaging leak so far. TIB announced the block on its website, saying it had taken administrative measures "after technical analysis and legal consideration."

People on Twitter and YouTube in Turkey have depicted political struggles between Erdogan and Fethullah Gulen, a U.S.-based imam and former ally of Erdogan. Erdogan has been in the midst of scandals of corruption, and an earlier leaked recording suggested he orchestrated the release of a sex tape in 2010 concerning former Republican People's Party leader, Baykal.

Erdogan faces key local elections this Sunday, March 30. He accused social media of spreading misinformation.

jesus christ is this guy desperate.

You can keep trying pal but there is no way to stop it so stop making yourself look like a god damn fool.

OT: I never knew turkey was this bad but damn this opens my eyes about some stuff.

Yep, Turkey is totally ready to join the EU...

My thoughts exactly. Even if you somehow forget about all the other human rights violations this alone should kick them out of the game for the next decade.

I certainly hope he gets totally wrecked in the election or else he'll have riots (and subsequently more blood) on his hands. If there is any lesson he should have learned from the uprisings in northern Africa and the middle east, it is that measures like these only make protests more likely.

Actually if he did attempt to hang on, rig the election or win the Turkish Military would dispose of him via coup.

They have a history of doing that, I suspect the only reason they haven't done so yet is due to the elections being so close.

Yanno, blocking communication platforms is just the kind of thing evil dictators typically do.

Just saying, since apparently this guy didn't get the historical memo at the kind of impression he's giving.

Turkey, this guy is casting your EU application up shit creek without a paddle. I can see real issues coming soon if this guy manages to retain power somehow.

You really need to reform your government if your governments response to corruption charges is to try and destroy the channels the leaks came from, instead of dealing with the corruption.

Blocking off websites is a dangerous, dangerous water to cross. Censorship should only be exercised in the most extreme of cases (like child pornography). An open press free to report on the wrongdoings of government is a crucial function of any country that doesn't want to fall under the will of a dictator.

I'm not Turkish, and this election will more then likely have no effect on me what so ever, but I really hope for Turkey's sake they throw this guy out and get people in office who aren't total assbags.

so not only will he be remembered as the arsehole that is corrupt but also the arsehole that is taking the peoples internet away.

and thats a well known thing you should know better.

never fuck with peoples internet connection.

it never ends up good for you, retard.

You know what? Screw youtube AND this guy. Both of 'em run like shit. And I hope his downfall serves as an object lesson TO youtube to get 'em to shoot straught for once.

I feel for the Turkish citizens. I just hope that guy gets the boot on the next election. Turkey has had their ups and downs with dictators, I just hope the best for the citizenry that is trapped in that shitty situation.

No, I wasn't and no, it doesn't. Generally, I hate the way youtube is run because, like this guy, they're shit. Now, I hope you're done with the insults, 'cause I've already reported it.

How stupid can you be?

Depriving people rights and internet will surely unite them behind me!

He couldn't invent worse word of mouth if he fucked a pig on national tv.

Know what? I was going to post a retort about the quality of YouTube today, but as soon as that captcha loaded below the text box.... screw it.

Captcha: time to unwind

I was going to go all out with forced G+ integration, the total reset of the comment upvotes, and everything. Thanks a lot captcha, you jerk.

I think every external website needs to cut off access whenever an oppressive government censors a site. Or at least block the officials' accounts to show how petty and corrupt they are while trying to keep innocent individuals' accounts open. It might send them the message that others outside their sphere of influence are watching and just might take action to free the oppressed.

When will he learn? You can't stop the signal man.

They are actually trying to block the internet in Turkey. Why? Don't want people to hear about all the stupid stuff they're doing?

Oh wait.
