Dark Souls 2 Adding Item to Make the Game Easier

An upcoming patch will add the Bonfire Sybaritic, an item aimed at making the game easier "for newcomers."

At this point, most gamers know that Dark Souls equals hard. The series has largely won its fame with its rampant difficulty that routinely chews up the most hardcore of gamers and spits them out like a bad piece of Double Bubble. That being the case, it's been revealed that the game's developers at From Software will shortly be adding a new item to Dark Souls 2 aimed at helping struggling players get into the game a bit more smoothly.

The item in question will be called the Bonfire Sybaritic and will alter the game so that players who use it will be faced with easier enemies. The trade-off will be that enemies under the Sybaritic's influence also won't drop as many souls as their more difficult counterparts. According to the game's designer Hidetaka Miyazaki, the Sybaritic is being designed to give players more options while leaving the core challenge that defines the franchise intact.

"While the majority of our fans prefer the intense difficulty of [Dark Souls 2], fan feedback and user testing have revealed that it's also the biggest barrier to bringing new players into the experience," he said. "We wanted to introduce an item that makes the game more manageable for newcomers."

Once its patched in, the Sybaritic will be found among the wares of the merchant in Majula. Players interested in using it will be able to get their first one for free. Every Sybaritic purchased afterward will cost 500 souls. It's Miyazaki's hope that "new players will use this as a chance to get better at the game" before increasing the difficulty back to its normal levels. What do you think? Is the Bonfire Sybaritic a good way to give shakier players a chance to learn? Or could it be a game changer that breaks the Dark Souls experience?

Yeaaa this smells of April Fools, but honestly it could be very breaking because of the Champion covent, getting the awestones while having "normal" difficulty would make it really easy to get the best 2 rings in the game, (one that makes punching really really good)

It's obviously an April Fool's joke, but the question is are you intentionally spreading the joke or did you fall for it yourself?

It's still April 1st. Trust no one!

From the Gamespot source:

UPDATE: While most of you were savvy enough to catch on, this is our annual April Fools' joke. We hope this didn't cause too much stress, but if a patch did come to Dark Souls II to affect the difficulty, it would probably just make things harder.

So yeah, there you go. All I need to know now is wether The Escapist fell for it or wether it tried to fool us into thinking they fell for it.

Shit it's an Aprils Fools joke.

Aw, I was really looking forward to the flamewar starting because of idiots believing that their Dark Souls experience will be affected by adding a difficulty level they don't even have to play on.

Danm I thought this April Fool joke would of added image or armour or weapons to make the game easier like one of the weapon is a rocket launcher!

It's pretty sad that a joke statement of introducing something to the game that would make it more accessible to new players while completely preserving the experience for those that want the challenge would likely be met with outrage.

I have a coworker who is a fan of Dark Souls and discussed the idea of an easy mode. He frothed at the idea. Said it would ruin the experience because no one would want to play the normal mode. Except him. And me. And I imagine EVERYONE that wants to play Dark Souls even though it has no easy mode.

Ah, don't worry. The flamewar will come anyway.

And because of that I will just post this before someone else can.

Because those two seem to be paramount to any Dark Souls thread.

This april fools joke is probably going to get someone pissed at me because I mostly play the easy modes in games.

Fuck.

I was so excited to see the elitist knobhead portion of the Souls fanbase frothing at the mouth, then I remembered what day it was and now I'm sad. Y U do dis Gamespot?

I get that this is just a joke, but I'm glad it is, truth be told. Nobody believes they can rise to the challenge at first, and that's what makes Dark Souls so beautiful. If it didn't force you to be the best that you could become, there would be no beauty.
