Batman Beyond Preview Gives First Look at New Short

A preview for an upcoming Batman Beyond short shows a seeming battle between two Batmen.

Batman Beyond was a great show and one that I thoroughly enjoyed. That being the case, I was always kind of put off by how comparatively lame protagonist Terry McGinnis was to Bruce Wayne. It's not that he was bad necessarily, it was more just that his stories and conflicts were leagues less interesting than when those moments when the show made connections the Batman: The Animated Series and Bruce's past career as the caped crusader. It also didn't help that the geriatric version of Bruce still, at times, came off as tough enough to rip Terry a new one.

It was with great amusement in turn, that I watched a recently released preview for an upcoming Batman Beyond short akin to the Animated Series short recently put together by Bruce Timm. In the preview, fans are treated to the spectacle of McGinnis's high-tech Batman duking it out with what appears to be Bruce Wayne's old-fashioned Animated Series version. I suspect no one will be surprised to hear that old-school Batman looks likes he's going to whoop new-school Batman.

The short itself is being put together by Warner Bros. Animation veteran Darwyn Cooke as a part of the DC's continued celebration of Batman's 75th anniversary. Cooke notably did storyboarding for both Batman: The Animated Series and Superman: The Animated Series. He was also responsible for Batman Beyond's nifty opening sequence. The Batman Beyond short is set to debut this Saturday at WonderCon in Anaheim, California.

Well that showed bugger all, the 'real' batman is probably just a robot.

What really made Batman Beyond for was the tease of the Cyberpunk setting, Batman has never been the interesting character, it's always been the villains. You just need cyberpunk villains, it's not that hard, and finding amoral bastards in such a setting is a given to an extent.

I looooved batman beyond, mostly for the setting. It's just such a breath of fresh air for an otherwise kind of stale franchise. Every time rocksteady teases a new game, I hope that it's a batman beyond game.

The whole Batman series was great, this looks like a nice return.

Ghehhhhh I hate teasers... Should've read the article more closely.

DC ALL ACCESS! get your pants wet annnnnddddd

4 seconds.

*trollface*

Just continue DCAU already!

Looks interesting!
I might get in trouble for this, but I kind of prefer Terry McGinnis to Bruce Wayne. He's a lot nicer, more apt to snark at the events around him, and is a lot more... stable.

Oh come on Will Friedle, you'll do this but you won't do Girl Meets World?

P.S. Thanks

That animation looks no good.Character design looks cheap, The movement is awkward and the color palet of that scene was just bland. Normally that is nitpicking but that's the scene they showed that they thought would grab peoples interest. yuck

Especially given Bruce is like 200 years old now.

Bruce actually got interesting in the whole "coping with his mortality" thing that came from the show. Terry seemed bland by comparison, but Bruce was pretty bland in his own era, too. Still, I thought crotchety old Batman helped the series some.

Seems unlikely we'll see one for a franchise that's been on the shelf for so long, but it'd be cool to see the additional toys and a different setting.

This is gonna be good. I missed Cyberpunk Batman like mad ever since Return of the Joker.

Just so everyone knows, I'm calling it right now:

HARDAC

Wait, are the DC Nation shorts coming back?

They kind have been back for a while, though... Just at an "interesting" time of the day on CN, at least...

OT: Oh! I can't to see this...

after a "new episode" of Teen Titans Go...

*sighs*

Hey, Batman Beyond!

I was a little young when the first Batman series started showing in my country so this series was my first real taste of the DCAU.

Hey now, cut Terry some slack. He's only been Batman for a few short years and can't call on the decades of experience Bruce has. I'd say he's done pretty well for himself thus far given the circumstances.

Besides, the kid's more emotionally stable than Bruce has ever been. While Bruce is all "DARKNEEESS! NO PAREEENTS," Terry is capable of actually enjoying life outside the suit.

Anywho, I'm psyched to see more Batman Beyond, even if it's just a single short. As an aside, check out "Batman: Strange Days" as well. It's a stylish re-imagining of the DCAU as a 1940's serial, complete with a Golden Age Batman:

However, a part of me can't help but suspect that these anniversary shorts are going to be the swan song for the great Kevin Conroy. No, I have nothing concrete to base it on, but with Mark Hamill retiring the Joker and the recent DC reboot I'd say it's probably in the cards. Call it a hunch. A real shame if that's the case, but he's definitely earned the right to retire if that's his prerogative. He'll always be the definitive voice of Batman for me regardless.

But didn't he commit suicide? Ah, he's a robot, he'll come back.

Anyways, I did like Terry as Batman. I actually found him to be very interesting, especially in the later Batman Beyond stories, like Return of the Joker or Epilogue. He was a great foil to old Bruce Wayne, and they played off each other nicely. And I liked that Terry found his own way of being Batman, rather than being a carbon copy of Wayne. He fought dirty, given his former life as a street thug.

I loved Batman Beyond as a kid. It mixed two of a my favorites, Batman and Sci-Fi. I'm very excited to hear the show is coming back. Bonus, it sounds like they got Will Friedle back.

I kind of wish I was hearing news about the Batgirl Beyond comics though.
