Fatal Frame V Coming Exclusively to Wii U

fatal frame wii u

A title or release date for the new Fatal Frame game has yet to be revealed.

While Resident Evil 7 appears to head more and more away from its survival horror roots with each iteration, Fatal Frame is a beloved Japanese survival horror series that hasn't skipped a beat since its first release on the PlayStation 2 back in 2001. Some good news for Fatal Frame fans has come today from Famitsu magazine, namely, that a fifth title is in development - exclusively for Nintendo's Wii U.

Furthermore, in conjunction with the new game's development, developer Tecmo Koei is expanding the franchise through a series of new multimedia expansions. Kadokawa Corporation will produce a live-action Fatal Frame film, and Multiple Personality Detective Psycho and The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service author Eiji Otsuka will pen an original novel. A comic from Shin Kibayashi is also planned.

The latest original entry in the Fatal Frame series, Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, launched for Wii in Japan in July 2008, but was never localized. A remake of Fatal Frame 2 was then released in Japan in 2012, but again, never made it over to the West.

Hopefully, this new title will get localized.

As much as the WiiU gets hated on for the tablet nonsense etc...I can actually see this series' core gimick (ghosts only visible through the camera/etc) *WORKING* with the WiiU.

dunno if i'd hold my breath on the localization, but wii u's pretty desperate for selling anything right now, so i wouldn't count it out entirely

Pretty much this. Let the "regular world" be shown on the TV, and the ghosts only through the tablet when you hold it in front of the TV. Match made in heaven. I might actually get a WiiU for this, if they do it right...

Since when is being exclusive to Wii U a good thing?

Exclusives are what people buy Nintendo consoles for, and the WiiU could use more exclusive releases not made by Nintendo. They better not think of keeping it Japan-only.

Unfortunately the last one was japan only as well although at least there was a fan patch that fixed that.

OT: Considering all the motion controls on the wii u i have a feeling this game could either be a console mover or another betrayal in a series i used to be into.

Well this is just kicking me while I'm still down from FF4 never getting localized. Now FF5 is going to be on a console I'll never buy AND almost certainly not localized.

What's next? Forbidden Siren 3 is going to be Ouya Exclusive?

Silent Hill...whatever number we are one now, being a free to play cellphone game with microtransations?

"Would you like to buy more batteries for your flashlight for 5000 Robbie Rabbit fun bucks?"

Please god don't make something where you have to point the controller at the screen to fight ghosts, that would be so very annoying (especially considering how combat centric these game are, just make something normal, please). But aside from that, i'm very excited about this, if they release it in the EU...

Btw, Project Zero 2 was localized for the west (EU atleast), i have it and it's pretty good except the motion controls are quite awful and they introduced a silly minigame whenever you pick up items (you do that a lot and it gets old very fast!). But those changes didn't manage to ruin a brilliant game, just shows how great it is.

That's going to be pretty tiresome, considring how much you usually use the camera in these games. You would be sitting with your arms stretched for most of the game. Unless they made ghosts scarce and changed the entire direction of the series, which i don't hope they do. The combat is the cool part about these games, imo. One of the most fun to play survival horror series out there, please don't ruin it with silly gimmicks.

Since people who have owned Wii U's have wanted to play games on them.

I'm looking forward to this, I don't usually play survival horror, but this looks interesting! Plus more games to play on my Wii U is always good!

It could make me buy a Wii U... or we might be looking at the curse of Fatal Frame 4 continuing onward to ruin another game in the franchise. There were good reasons that Mask of the Lunar Eclipse was not officially brought over: I had the opportunity to try playing it.

I could definitely see this working well on Wii U. It's the same sort of reason I think a Pokemon Snap game on Wii U would be great as well.

Newsflash: games can be released on multiple platforms and people who don't own a Wii U not being able to play it is NOT a good thing... then again, Wii U and multiplats are like two parallel lines.

Exclusives might be bad for your wallet but they are very good for the industry; they drive competition and encourage innovation.

Also, the WiiU has the potential to offer unique gameplay experiences that are not possible with the other consoles and won't be possible if all the system gets is ports. So far, very few games on the system have fully embraced this uniqueness but the ones that have are incredibly compelling.

Yeah... how 'bout we get Fatal Frame 4 localized first, eh Nintendo?

Dragonbums:

Exclusives are the only reason the consumer has to buy any console.

If that were true they wouldn't be rushing to buy new consoles with nary an exclusive worth mentioning by the millions.

The 'tablet nonsense' is rarely used in Wii U games. The only games you can't use regular controllers for on the Wii U are a couple of launch titles (ZombiU and Nintendoland), and that's just because they're glorified tech demos.

Nope don't care. A game I know for certain won't be localised to English isn't going to sell me on the Wii U.
I question how hard translating text is, but meh if they don't want money than that is their fault.

Trishbot:

I'm not against Fatal Frame 4 being localized, but it needs more than just a localization. It needs a control revamp so that we aren't fighting with a wii-mote to aim a camera. Otherwise it really wasn't that bad of a game.

Now normally I'd be excited...except for the fact that this game probably won't get localized just like Fatal Frame 4. While the camera in that game was bad, it was still fun (friend imported it and played it on his hack Wii). I'm prepared for Nintendo's archaic region locking to screw me over again. >.>

They basically have to translate all text and speech in the game, rewrite it so that it makes sense after translation, revoice it if there's voice acting, make sure the lip syncing isn't terrible, write in the text again. Then of course there're bug fixes etc.

It's perfectly doable, but it's a process which is extremely taxing or impossible for just one or two people, and it's understandable when games don't get localized.

This is the same franchise, yes. Fatal Frame was called Project Zero in some countries.

OT: Wow, An exclusive that tempts me to buy a Wii U.

This is exactly what they needed, assuming they localize it.

Excuse me for going to care more about my wallet than about Nintendo's position in competition.

People say PS4 and XBone are underpowered to carry on an entire generation, what does this say about Wii U then? And uniqueness is good and all, but necessity is mother of all inventions. All the good ones anyway.

I didn't have to, it doesn't make it a bad thing either.

Wasn't there a Fatal Frame game that didn't make it in the US? I seem to recall an ex girlfriend hacking her original Wii to play one of these games. I never understood her affinity with them though. She made me play them, and I found myself bored. Ghosts just aren't scary to me I guess. The atmosphere was really good though.

You should want ALL of the companies to be competitive. I don't much care for the Xbox lineup but that doesn't mean I want the system to fail, that would be bad for all of the consoles. With no direct competition there would be little reason for Sony to try and produce better games or better user experiences.

You can play the underpowered card and you wouldn't be wrong, but that has rarely prevented a system from doing well. Your own quote works well here, necessity is the mother of all invention, so let's see what can be made when a company throws its all behind gameplay and innovation instead of concentrating on graphics.

When Nintendo is the only console creator willing to pony up the cash to make some games a reality. People like to forget that if it wasn't for Nintendo, Bayonetta 2 would never get made.

Fatal Frame V coming to the Wii U ?!?! YES, YES, YES !!! :D finally something I can play other than Zombi U and the soon release of Bayonetta 2

ZombiU was actually pretty good at first and part of this was its use of the wii u gimmicks. I have never played a fatal frame game but Id be down for a japanese horror game anyday.

I remember shitting my pants when playing Fatal Frame 2 on my cousins' PS2, he already finished it and he was delighted to see me scared all the way through, he was like "hey!, you missed something there", "but I already checked there, there's nothing!", "well, check again!", "I tell you there's nothing he... *pulls out camera, ghost child appears out of nowhere* HOLY SHIT!".

Good stuff :)
