Sony Wins Rights to Live-Action Barbie Movie

Studio apparently hoping for a hit of problematically unattainable proportions

Long before movies based on action figures, building blocks and even Easter candy were the hot ticket in Hollywood, generations of studios and producers have sought to create a live-action movie based on the iconic Barbie dolls. Pitches and overtures (outside of a series of direct-to-video animated features) had always been rejected by Mattel, but no longer: The company was reportedly won-over by a pitch from producers Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald, which quickly secured an immediate green light from Sony bigwigs Amy Pascal and Hannah Minghella.

Jenny Bicks, a former writer for Sex & The City, will pen the screenplay, which the producers describe as a comedy wherein Barbie functions as a "modern-day Mary Poppins" who uses her myriad professional skills to improve the lives of people she encounters. No casting has been announced, but the production will reportedly seek to "discover" a new, unknown young actress to take the lead role rather than casting an established star; with more well-known actors in the roles of folks Barbie encounters across what the studio hopes will be multiple films.

Barbie was created in 1959 by Ruth Handler, the wife of a Mattel co-founder, who had long tried in vain to convince the fledgling toy company that a "fashion doll" with an adult female body (as opposed to baby dolls which dominated the market at the time) would be a popular item. While on vacation in Germany, she discovered that a doll of the type she'd envisioned had already been produced as "Bild Lili," an adult-marketed toy based on a risque German comic strip. Using Lili as a model, Handler convinced Mattel to take a chance on Barbie - which quickly became one of the biggest-selling toys in history and the bedrock of the company's ongoing mega-success.

Presumably, this person will not be considered for the title role.

Who will this movie even be for?
Presumably it will target the adult women who feel nostalgic or something? But is there a market for that? I can see why you'd want to see stuff like Transformers or TNMT from your childhood on a big screen, but Barbie doesn't have any cool fight-scenes, or humor, or storylines to adapt and mine for nostalgia.

It's not like Barbie has any deep mythos to be butchered, so I don't see anyone caring. It will just be a brainless unrelated movie with a well-known name attached.

It's Battleship for women, in other words.

This is all I thought of when I saw Live action barbie film. I mean seriously, RIGHT THERE!

Also, creepy beyond all thought. Proof of the uncanny valley.

Between this and Peeps I look forward to the future of the film industry. We're gonna see some fresh original thought here people.

They already made this movie! In fact, they made two: Toy Story 2 & Toy Story 3! I don't think you can top those...

I'd like to hope a Sony executive heard this news and thought, "Wait, this is what we were paying our legal department for?"

Hey man, I was looking forward to sleeping tonight. Why'd you have ruin it for me?

OT: Hopefully they won't make it like that awful Barbie game that came out recently. Giant Bomb did a quick look on that, and it looked frickin' terrible.

No.
Just. No.

I don't know how they're going to be able to do any movie with Barbie that isn't sexist or stupid.

It's like otherkin that think they are pieces of plastic.

I find stunning that someone seriously is thinking in spending an average of 50 to 100 millions US dollars to make a live action movie of Barbie 0_0

If it makes you feel better, she looks like this without make-up.

Still painfully thin though.

Now remember Sony, only make her President in the final movie. There is no way to go beyond that.

I'm not sure that's true. Certainly my younger sister has found enough movies to watch that there has to be some sort of storyline there. A quick search on wikipedia reveals a list of a few dozen movies.

The ones I've seen were fairy-tales and fantasy, so I'm assuming they didn't contribute to the official Barbie-canon.

I wouldn't say that. You could make a good movie out of anything, and if it's based on Barbie in name-only, it could be anything.
But would it be allowed to be anything meaningful?

Probably not.

Jesus fucking Christ. I feel like part of my soul jumped out of my body, packed its bags, and grabbed a taxi to the nearest airport.

That kind of script only works when she's a doll you dumbasses! Without that kind of humor this is going to be so boring, and if you do make her a live action doll then its going be creepy as all fucking hell.

Why would anyone watch this shit when we have "Barbie - Life in the Dream House". Seriously, watch that series, its better then My Little Pony - Friendship is Magic, because unlike MLP the writers of Barbie are actually competent and don't turn a great idea into utter shite.

Here, enjoy.

Hum, earlier this year Mattel recorded a record drop in Barbie sales, now they finally decide to sell movie rights. Coincidence?

Everyone seems to love the picture I linked, but how many of you know that that's a real person and not CGI?

*Snerk* Why?

I mean, I understand you have to report it, but man... Does Sony not have better things to do?

Obviously it's going to be a horror movie about a doll coming to life.

The wierd thing about that picture is..rather than anything else, what i find wrong is the proportions. The head looks unnaturally large for the body and neck, it just..doesnt fit.

That being said, why would they make a Movie about Barbie? Or rather, what possible plot could a movie with Barbie in it have? Unless its a semi-documentary about how people go overboard with beauty ideals and stuff like that, which might actually be worth watching. I mean our culture is obsessed with some kind of beauty ideal and plastic surgery to look "perfect", so i could certainly see a movie plot based around that, as satire more than anything else.
