Girlfriend Creates Real Life Borderlands Claptrap for Significant Other

Claptrap Real

This gamer's significant other has made him a real life Claptrap from Borderlands for his birthday, and yes, it looks awesome.

While chances of us getting abilities in real life from Gearbox Software's action-RPG Borderlands won't be happening anytime soon, Reddit user Phil Vader's girlfriend has possibly made the next best thing -- and that's creating him a real life Claptrap. As proof of its creation, a picture of the robot was posted online next to his dog and it even has a functioning eye. I doubt it can talk, but needless to say, if you're a Borderlands fan, this might be one of the best presents you can ever get.

You can check out another image that shows how it looks next to a banana for scale.

The "CL4P-TP General Purpose Robots," or more commonly known as Claptraps, are manufactured by fictional company Hyperion and were found scattered about in Pandora and when fixed, would give the player a reward. In Borderlands 2, the original Fyrestone Claptrap makes an appearance and helps the Vault Hunters in their quest, as well as provide snappy banter to engage players.

In other Borderlands news, the latest game in the franchise has been announced and will be called Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. and is being developed 2K Australia and not series creator Gearbox. Oddly enough it's only set to come out for last-gen consoles and PC this fall and not for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Indeed! :D Not only is she fine with her SO being a gamer, she (seems) to actually support it.

Wow, that's an awesome present. I'm a tiny bit jealous.

"You can check out another image that shows how it looks next to a banana for scale."
Lol, this is my new standard measurement unit. I'm off to find out how many bananas tall I am.

Instant break up. Why the hell would you give me the most annoying thing in the entire game? Is there something you want to tell me? Have I not been paying enough attention to the preliminaries before playing the finals?

My first reaction was that this is kind of awesome, but upon closer inspection I suspect lameness?

Does it even move? It doesn't really look like it, at the very least it could have been strapped on top of a Roomba or something.

And if it also doesn't talk, then it really just seems to be a decorated cardboard box. Presumably he's pretty crazy about Borderlands to give her this idea, but I for one am thankful my girlfriend knows better than to create such wastes of space based on my interests.

I misread this at first as the girl had created the Claptrap to be her significant other.

It's better that was not correct.

While it is neat but did she wanted to annoyed/ troll him with Claptrap. Yeah I'm one of the people who find him annoying than Tina (I actually kind of liked Tina well I symapthies her messed up life).

Hey I read it as the girl had given the clap to her significant other. Your's is at least gaming related.

Hmm...

Yeah no, if my boyfriend/husband made me a claptrap he would have to be trollin' me because there's no way in hell i want that obnoxious trash near me. Hated the little bastard in BL1 and gearbox made him worse for BL2.

Congratz to the the couple though.

None of my gfs did anything for me game related, they actually despise that I game.......whatever you think of claptrap, that's one lucky guy there.

Seriously, put a ring on that finger now dude.

OT: Holy crap that impressive, that girl's got some real talent. :D

Nothing says "I love you" like a loud, grating, obnoxious piece of metal trash.

In all seriousness, as much as I despise Claptrap, that is pretty cool and I like the work gone into it to make the eye light up and everything. Considering how terrible I am at making those sort of things, I have a serious amount of respect for anyone who can.

Phil, believe me when I say this:

MARRY THIS GIRL. NOW.

Crikey there are a couple of miserable posts on this thread! So what if it doesn't "work", or if Claptrap as a character is annoying?

It's obvious these two have a great relationship if hobbies can manifest themselves like this: it's a lovely gift on multiple levels.

Good lord man. It's the thought that counts.

Not many people have that much knowledge in moveable mechanics, yet alone the time devoted to making such a thing work. Regardless of if it moves she still put in a lot of effort into making the thing as close to the game as possible.

Sheesh. It's not like she's applying for a job at a biotech animatronic facility.

Most people would say thanks and go on about how you didn't have to expend so much time doing a gift like this.

Don't you know? If you get something or talk about something you got and it's not the best-thing-ever since sliced bread and bacon it's utter shit. Because you can only be #1 or you're shit. That's how the interwebs works!

Why does the article headline with 'girlfriend creates', instead of, say, 'Girl/Woman creates for boyfriend'? Can a female only exist in this community as a significant other, denied of independence? Or is it assmuing that most escapist readers are male and neurotic, so panders to that mindset?

Anyhow, at least she put the time and effort in, that alone can be appreciated. Not sure if this would have been news without the boyfriend being an apparently known Reddit user, which begs the question, how many cooler gifts have been made for ppl less well publicised elsewhere?
Personally i dont like borderlands, so this would have been no more tham an elaborate insult. Maybe more impressive that way, considering no one puts time into their insults anymore.

That's pretty cool. I had initially thought it moved and talked and that sort of thing, but a Claptrap is an undertaking either way.

Hey, maybe it's just that the person who posted it on Reddit, ie. the source of this material, is the person of reference by which we know who the female is? Does that not make sense?

I would like one... SO I CAN TAKE IT OUT ON THE SHOOTING RANGE!

I have a friend who builds those types of collectables and I can tell you its one step at a time depending on how she built it did she commission it or build it herself? Either way there is expense and knowledge to build a fully functioning clap trap one not only needs to fabricate all the pieces and paint it you're also looking at all his electronics making him move can be jerry rigged with electric car base and wheel but will they support the weight? And being his design is specific you may need to change his proportions to balance properly on the uniwheel when you drive him you might even need to add/decrease weight of all internal wiring to make sure he won't fall over the second you turn him on, and if you can't find his wheel or you can't get all the balance issues sorted with the on market wheels then that means electrical work to build the whole thing from scratch and to make your own remote to control him. At least there kits out there and this is an easier build because you don't need to hid curtain things that on on other rigs would be considered unsightly. Also how is he going to solo stand are you going to integrate kick stand? That wasn't part of the design so are you going to make the wheel so broad as its not an issue but then again you change his proportions too much and it gets to be obvious.

Clap Trap talking and making sounds isn't that easy, if you legally want them you have to buy them from companies authorized to sell them and that can be a pretty penny my friend's R2D2 sounds came on a chip he had to integrate into the body. If you have all the technology to record it in a quality way you still need to get it into a format that will work for your rig for instance her making a burned CD of sounds wouldn't be as cool as rigging it to the remote keys on a controller so you control what he says and when in addition to controlling his movements. My friend has taken several years to hand craft a functioning R2D2 steampunk version which he is finally proud to show off to us with light, sounds, moveable parts, controllable base, and he will never be done adding all the little extras he wants he can't stop making the Ghost Buster's pack it takes him a good month to hand craft that pack, gun, and include all the sound effects, lights (and the reason this is shorter is because he has molds he handmade and cast so he can keep doing it w/o the molds he says he wouldn't be able to keep making it) and now he's looking to complicate his life more by making it play not just its own music from the movie but also he wants it to play the customers music like their own mp3 players and such! Which will now tack on time for those seeking these complex packs.

Looking at the item it seems her budget wasn't sky high to make this character so lets just say she had $1000 to work with you aren't getting all the bells and whistles you stated w/o a whole lot more money if you commissioned it and if you make it yourself you might be able to keep it under that material wise but you have to choose do I buy all the electric stuff as pre-made as I can find it or do it myself? molding, fabricating, wood working, and wiring clap trap by yourself or with your friends who know how to do these things in these areas will keep the cost down but for the most budget friendly its best to do it yourself.

Long story short her having the eye and its standing there is a great start for her first model she can always add to it later and frankly she did it to show her man she loves him and at least supports what he likes and most men I know beam at that sort of attention and caring from their GFs/wives. So no I don't find it lame as a personalized gift she could've gotten him a poster but she chose to make it for him. I think the white paint not being perfect as deliberate to make him look old and as a decorative table/floor lamp its pretty awesome.

He should marry her without delay. A woman who puts so much thought and effort to make such an awesome present is a keeper.

err...because the source material is from the guy/boyfriends POV? I mean jesus, we need to pick our battles, not go looking for them.

OT: This is pretty frickin sweet, I've never had a significant other put that much effort or consideration into a gift, kudos to both of em! Pretty spot on for making of it (without making it too expensive I'm sure)

Wow! I wish I could find a guy who would do something like that for me. What an amazing present. :D

Apologies. It wasnt meant seriously, i shouldve indicated that, but being in a sour mood at time of writing meant my worry of ppl taking me too seriously evaporates and the humour becomes dryer than Ghandi's flip-flop

CAPTCHA: bazinga!

GAH!! I don't think she's quite THAT nerdy, Captcha! (The BBT characters scare me, BTW. Klingon Boggle?!?)

Interesting bit of work, I must say! And just in time for the Pre-Sequel where you have Claptrap as a playable!
