Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Writer to Pen Script for Mission: Impossible 5

Modern Warfare 3 and Need for Speed: Rivals writer, Will Staples, has been tapped to write the script for Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible 5.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 writer Will Staples is set to pen the script for the fifth entry in the Mission: Impossible film franchise. Staples is taking over for screewriter Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3), who was replaced following Christopher McQuarrie's (Jack Reacher)involvement to direct the film. While Staples' projects has been mostly around video games (Need for Speed script writer), he has also written Myth for Fox, King of Heists starring Jeremy Renner, and is also attached to pen Ben Affleck's Blood & Treasure.

With the 2011 release of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, the film saw actor Tom Cruise team up with Jeremy Renner (The Avengers) that proved to be a massive success by not only pumping new life into the franchise, but also managed to gross $694.7 million worldwide It's sequel, Mission: Impossible 5, will once again star Tom Cruise as super agent Ethan Hunt, and Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn; but there's still no word yet whether Renner will return to reprise his role.

The fifth Mission: Impossible film is being produced by Tom Cruise Productions, Paramount Pictures, Skydance Productions and J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot for a December 25, 2015 release date.

Should we expect an appearance by the Call of Duty dog, then? All kidding aside, let's hope Staples knocks this one out of the park, so that it paves the way for more video game writers who want a shot in writing a Hollywood film.

So you take Cruise and MW3, two things I despise from modern culture, and blend them.
Yah.
no.

Well, if we needed more proof Cruise is mad as a box of frogs, here it is. I look forward to the part where he fights the Islamic Communist forces of Skeletor. I'm all for game writers going to movies and vice versa, but this will not end well for anyone.

You know what? There have actually been worse ideas.

Modern Warfare 3 was idiotic because it tried to take itself seriously while telling the story of Russia invading the entirety of Europe simultaneously.

If this next MI movie takes the tone of Ghost Protocol, but keep the lunacy of Staple's past work, it could be a pretty enjoyable flick.

Although I was always going to see it as long as Tom Cruise was in it. I love the guy as an actor and I've enjoyed pretty much everything he's made.

Sir Thomas Sean Connery:

In one week. One week after they tried the same with the US and failed royally.

This could work very well actually. MW3 was, for me at least, a silly fun action game. Yes the story was hard to swallow at points, but at least it wasn't boring and terrible like Ghosts. I can see that type of writing style working very well for a Mission Impossible movie.

Yep.
And then the US manages to mobilize its entire military instantly following the Russian retreat and transport a significant portion of it across the Atlantic because none of the European countries military can beat their respective invasions.

Because 'Murica

Does it mean everyone who fights alongside Cruises dies randomly

That actually seems like a good fit. MW3 was a mindless action movie, pretty much, and that would go perfectly with the Mission Impossible series.

Ghost Protocol was an amazingly fresh breath of air for this series. I just hope they don't screw it up somehow.

I also hope Renner returns. He seems to have gotten typecasted for the secret agent role, but I think he is well suited for it.

I'd rather have him work on a script of a MW adaptation directed by Micheal Bay. The only reason I played anything beyond MW1 was for ridiculous story that seemed like Bay directing a Tom Clancy novel. Despite the crappy characters and crude sexual humor unfitting of a movie based on a toy franchise, a Bay movie is easier to watch the anything with Tom "jumping on the couch and praising the religious teachings of a rubbish sci-fi author" Cruise in it.

Wait, MW3 had a writer?!

I would have sworn they just got shitfaced, watched Red Dawn and the rest is magic.

Wait there's been 4 mission impossible films? Really? i Can only recall 3, the first one with the great Jon Voight, the awfully over the top John Woo one, and the one with the late great Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Am i missing one? Obviously i am.

The guy who wrote Russia invading all of Europe at the same time? Don't exactly have high hopes for this script then, no offense to the man himself.

Are you Escapist editors just sans proofreading nowadays?

managed to gross $694.7 million worldwide It's sequel, Mission: Impossible 5, will once again star

Period after "worldwide". The possessive pronoun for "it" is "its" (no apostrophe); "its sequel."

lol, the guy that wrote the video game equivalent of "Axe Cop" (with copious amount of xenophobia added in) is at it again?

this should be fun, like watching the hindenburg fall type of fun. won't pay any money to see it though, I respect the seventh art this much

Its important to consider that game writers don't really come up with the concept for games. They basically are tasked with tying together the set pieces that the developers make. So I very much doubt that Staples came up with the idea of having Russia invade Europe.

I got the chance to meet Will Staples recently (he's an alum of my university) and he's a really smart, nice guy. I've never seen a Mission Impossible movie, but I wish him and the filmmakers the best of luck.

That is why the movie is going to be ab-so-freaking-lutely amazing! Just when you think it's Impossible for Tom Cruise to piss-off any more people - BLAMO! Mission accomplished!

My man TC is like the Xenu of all trolls.
