Xbox One to Get Kinect-Free Version for $399 in June

Starting June 9th, a new Xbox One will be available without Kinect for those that want it.

Microsoft has announced that they will be offering a new Kinect-free Xbox One beginning on June 9th for the slimmed down price of $399.99.

In a post on the official Xbox site, Microsoft's Phil Spencer revealed the details, saying that games like Titanfall, Dead Rising 3, Watch Dogs and Destiny will continue to be available without any type of motion control requirement. Apps such as Twitch, YouTube and Netflix will be similarly unaffected.

In addition, Spencer revealed some changes and updates for Xbox Live Gold, including some free games for Xbox 360 users to celebrate one year of Games with Gold. The free games for June will be Dark Souls, Charlie Murder and Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition.

So Xbox One users won't feel left out, Games with Gold and Deals with Gold will also become available in June. The first titles to get the 50%-75% discount treatment will be Forza Motorsport 5, and Ryse: Son of Rome, as well as a few others that Spencer would not divulge.

Finally, many entertainment apps that had been only available with an Xbox Gold membership will be taken out from under the pay umbrella, requiring only an Xbox Live account. Xbox 360 and Xbox One users will now get free access to "Machinima, Twitch and Upload, popular video services like Netflix, Univision Deportes, GoPro, Red Bull TV and HBO GO, sports experiences like the NFL app for Xbox One, MLB.TV, NBA Game Time, NHL Game Center and more. Internet Explorer, Skype, OneDrive and OneGuide will also be available to all Xbox customers."

Spencer stressed that the Kinect is still part of the Xbox One vision. "We will continue to offer a premium Xbox One with Kinect bundle to deliver voice and gesture controls, biometric sign-in, instant personalization, instant scanning of QR codes, and enhanced features only available with Kinect in games such as Kinect Sports Rivals. Just Dance 2014, Project Spark and more."

Users who purchase the Xbox One sans Kinect will be able to change their mind and add a standalone sensor, but not until, Microsoft makes it available sometime in the fall.

Huh, well, that didn't take long.

It seems like they're getting rather desperate.

'The Kinect is integral to the use of the console'

*6 months later*

"Here's a Kinect-less version, please give us your money, we really need it."

They said it couldn't be done. That it wouldn't be done. Now. Now it is being done. Who would have thought it?

I guess they finally managed to shift enough pieces of Kinect...or just realized how terribad it is.

This would have worked a lot better if they had done it before everyone bought the cheaper PS4...

TOOK YA LONG ENOUGH! Microsoft is really putting up a pathetic display this generation. "No! This part of the console is integral! If you don't like it you can go buy a PS4! WAIT I DIDN'T MEAN ACTUALLY GO BUY A PS4! Wait, here, I took it off, please buy my product!"

Whats the deal MS? You told everyone in no uncertain terms that the Xbone will NOT work without Kinect. Yet it does? So another case of outright lying is now proven and it is still going to be technologically inferior to the PS4 for the same price.

I don't get it, can someone with business knowledge please explain this series of blunders and how they possibly thought it would work?

I don't think this will affect sales as much as people think.

Even without Kinect, the XB1 is still significantly weaker than the PS4, and thus won't run multiplat games as well.

In Australia the Xbox One is going to be CHEAPER than the PS4.

Glad to see proper competition.

I'm sure this'll now mean that everyone on the internet that said "I'll get it when they get rid of the Kinect, stop requiring Gold for apps and all that" will now turn round and buy it, especially at the new price.

Right guys?

Or will they turn round and go "Too little, too late"? Because why be consistent.

Anyway, looks like Spencer is having a big impact, which is good to see.

Huh so how many early adopters of the xbox one are now annoyed/frustrated/enraged at this? I mean this isn't even a year after launch this is like months after launch and they are dropping the kinect.

In other news Microsoft still king of retarded business moves.

This article is a lie.

Microsoft CLEARLY stated early on that the Xbox One couldn't function without the Kinect; that it was integral to the system being what it is.

Obviously, this is just Sony paying the Escapist's bills.

Xbox couldn't be that desperate...

...Right?

I like it how they are acting like this was their kind selfless idea when they have effevtively been strong-armed into it by an angry mob. Microsoft's arc from belligerence to writhing contrition has been beautiful to see. It's also a great demonstration of how companies will outright lie to you in order to hoover up your money.
"The DRM is an integral part of the console and cannot be removed without destroying it" **removes DRM**
"The Kinect is a vital part of the Xbone, you NEED it" **removes Kinect**

The Kinect also seemed to be using a portion of the already underpowered AMD Jaguar CPUs, with some using the reference of the commercially available models to suggest that up to half the threads could be occupied by the OS and the Kinect. This is mainly conjecture i admit but it could go some way to explaining the disparity between the PS4 and Xbone when their hardware is so similar.

I hope this will put the final nail in the coffin of forced motion control integration. It was merely a passing fad. I don't think the Kinect has much part to play in the progress of most types of gaming. It is a niche, novelty device.

And just like that, the console race is back on.

Here comes a price cut from Sony...

I was never going to buy it to begin with, but it's good to see Microsoft actually competing, instead of pretending it dominates the market.

Still don't think this will make people buy this VCR player. I am gonna laugh when people start to complain that they bought the launch one with Kinect and now they could have saved 100 bucks. Perfect example of reason to not buy console at launch!

Between this and Microsoft lifting the stupid paywall for stuff like Netflix and Hulu, people might actually consider buying the One.

Not me though, still butthurt about the way they handled their reveal, their messaging and advertising of the system, the way the system was initially intended to run with it's anti-consumer ownership/pro-advertiser licensing feel, and their attitude towards their consumer base leading up to and during E3 last year.

But at least they're willing to compromise their vision to get more sales up on the thing. You know, actually compete with their rival console in sales and whatnot.

Man I almost can't wait to see Microsoft do something appealing and decently good and still see it being called "weak" and "desperate".

It's like I can't wait for that 1% of news that hopefully won't be spun on it's side for the ultra cynics that have no stake with MS to begin with.

So now the inferior product is now cheaper than its competitor? Took you long enough to remember one of the 360's positive aspects MS.

Now to see whether this is has a major impact or if the Kinect and Day One policy's stench will linger on.

John Keefer:
Spencer stressed that the Kinect is still part of the Xbox One vision.

Yeah, no, the moment they start selling a Kinect-less model, the Kinect will have become 'just another peripheral'.

Kind of sad to see that they are making this move, I would have liked to see them stick to their guns and convince people that the kinect does provide some added value to the Xbox experience.

Didn't think that they would buckle this easily, bunch of pansies.

Praise Sony!

This console race has somewhat restored my faith in capitalism. Now the two consoles are on level pegging again. Let's see if the advantage Sony has built up is going to stick. Also the Kinect is officially dead, they couldn't make a single compelling game that used the Kinect when it was a mandatory add-on. If no-one could give a toss then, no-ones going to give a toss now

Maybe we shouldn't express unbridled gratitude for something that should have been there at launch. You know Jim just did a great video on this last week, how a company breaks something and when they fix a problem they created and that should not have been there people are bafflingly grateful.

Yes this is good news, we finally get the basic options we wanted, but it was still an artificial problem created by Microsoft themselves. It's also a slightly embarrassing climb-down for them after insistence the Kintect was vital and the Xbone wouldn't work without it. I think most news sites will say what 99% of games think; it should have been this way in the first place and Microsoft should have never pretended it shouldn't.

Better late than never eh? Now the XBone is no longer weaker AND $100 more expensive then the PS4.

Kinect has been out for what, 3 1/2 years now? You'd think they'd realised /before/ the XBone development that nobody cares about it.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Saw this coming from a mile away. Maybe I'll get one some day.

I'm sure they'll survive... some how.

Seriously the kinect should always have been optional. It's a niche product. Not everyone wants to come off shift to flail around spastically infront of the telly.

Besides.. I haven't heard of many games that made the kinect worth it.

Good move on Spencer, not just the kinect-less version but the other stuff too, the Games with Gold is starting to actually released fairly recent and good games.

And its nice to see them start offering games and better discounts for Xbox One users (I dont really plan on getting one but its still nice)

So Microsoft have done the impossible twice now; first getting rid of the DRM that was a vital part of the console, now ditching the Kinect. The power of the cloud is truly infinite. All hail TV!

Microsoft isn't your friend. They don't care about you. They care about your money and numbers and the number amount of money you willingly give them. Sony is the exact same way. Nintendo is the exact same way. The difference between them and Microsoft is the way they present themselves to their consumers and the options they provide them.

You're acting like all of this negative spin on positive changes Microsoft is making isn't deserved. It is. And you making passive-aggressive comments without elaborating upon them doesn't make you seem clever or witty for pointing out the amount of negativity and cynicism people have towards the One.

Stupid double-posting BS....Here's a puppy.

Well aware of the episode itself, it was a good one, however there are many mistakes made by other 2 and yet MS gets the absolute fuck ton of the bile and vitriol, it's like expecting MS to do something good but at the same time it's totally not right of me to expect people here to change their tune, except that's never going to happen and it's pathetically sad, I'm sorry but it's the same tune per article, what's the discussion value on these articles again if MS isn't here to listen in and we're still spewing the same bile and insults towards an emotionless brand?.

Nothing, there is none and even if there was anything it's already been done before.

Lets throw something out there that's not MS related, I expect Steam to have proper QA, it's a glaring problem pointed out by many yet it gets praised to the high bloody heavens, why is that not getting ragged and biled on?, don't give me the "oh it's not as bad/nowhere near as bad as such and such", there's no excuse for having really shit and enxt to no QA at all when other businesses big and small can do it out there.

Holy shit... I did not expect this news to ever happen. Damn...

The power of hate prevails I guess?

At least it goes to show how stunningly full of shit these assholes are, I mean we already knew that but now we have even more proof.

So that pretty much means that the Kinect is dead right? Unless its sold enough to be its own thing that people want, god damn I hope not.

The whole point of forcing this device down our throats was so developers can be guarantied to have this kind of functionality for their games. So how many developers is this now fucking over?

LOL, oh Microsoft, why you so shitty?

Nice. My brother's been saving up for one... he'll be happy to ditch the Kinect.

I mean, it's honestly a great piece of technology. Just not something we should have had to fork over an extra hundred bucks for.

Sorry Microsoft, my mind is already made up. I will get a PS4 this summer.

Cool =^), glad to know I've been slapped on that page already.

gee whiz I'd always thought MS and the other two were my bestest pals int he whole world, golly gee was I proved wrong.

Finally. It wouldnt be so bad if Kinect was amazing and their were loads of amazing software for it. But there isnt, every game has been shit apart from Dance games. Im sure they had high hopes for the kinect, but it just hasnt worked out the way they hoped. Good they are ditching it.
