Female Animal Crossing Villager Is Playable in Super Smash Bros

Female Villager in Smash

Following a male counterpart to the Wii Fit Trainer in Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS, the Villager from Animal Crossing also has a female counterpart.

Super Smash Bros director Masahiro Sakurai confirmed in his Pic of the Day that players can choose to fight as a female Animal Crossing villager as an alternate to the default male villager.

Previously Smash Bros has used alternate palettes for the fighters, but for at least some characters in the new Smash Bros titles will instead use different costumes and genders. Four options, two male and two female, for the Villager are on display in the picture with the different styles of eyes, hair, and clothes from the series.

This is not too surprising as Sakurai had earlier confirmed that the Wii Fit Trainer, who is female by default in Smash Bros, has a playable male alternate with the exact set of moves and mechanics. While seeing the same applied to the Villager isn't surprising, it's still worth celebrating having another female character - especially from a series where the genders are equal.

So far the Villager and the Wii Fit Trainer are the only humanoid characters with male and female versions, and from the other options so far, they're the only ones that makes sense to do this. However, alternate costumes could still apply to the other characters. After all, Pikachu's worn different hats in earlier Super Smash Bros titles. Some characters would lend themselves well to other costumes, such as Link and his various tunics.

Well... It's basically the same thing they did with Wario in Brawl. He had his WarioWare outfit by default but you could switch to his regular Mario-esque outfit too.

It basically makes sense. I doubt they'll do it for many other characters, though. This is just because the Animal Crossing villager is supposed to be a blank slate for the player. It's similar with the Wii Fit Trainer, but obviously not exactly the same.

I do like the idea, though.

That is pretty cool to hear. I just wish we'd be getting more character reveals this month. We're nearing the end of May and not one have been mentioned. I could understand they want to hold off on that until E3 but it feels like too long of a wait IMO.

Those Animal Crossing characters creep me out for some reason. Why would you want to play as either of them?

Drummodino and myself were discussing this game not that long ago. Seeing as Lucina from Fire Emblem looks somewhat similar to Marth and would have the same kind of moves, it'd work if they included her in the game too as an alternative version. Especially as she is a much more modern character (and looks way cooler).

You are not the first to be creeped out by them...and you won't be the last.

I have to be honest. Amongst the costume swaps, I seriously want them to include Raggedy Ann and Andy-esque costumes for them. I swear...that's what I think when I see the triangle nose. Heck...I actually wonder if anyone's actually tried to make their AC character look like either of those characters because of that.

Oh, they had to pick the "weird eyes". I think two of the eyes are good - the one the default male villager's got, and another pair that's not in all of the games.

Seriously, they're creepy though.

Yeah I'm hoping that happens too. That, or she could be an alternate of Chrom, who I am pretty sure will be Ike's replacement.

OT: I figured this would happen, and I really like the idea of alternate costumes being different characters in general. I would like to see and alternate Mario be Doctor Mario, or maybe even different Links as alternate costumes.

I agree I hope they do the different costumes with a bunch of characters like skyward link and twilight link costumes for example.

So Nintendo avoids having homosexual player characters but allows more and more females in Smash? It's rather confusing, but at least they make baby steps. You can't say their rosters are much more/less representative than, say, the United States Congress.

It'd be funny if they let you use your characters straight from New Leaf in the 3ds version, but they're probably not gonna do that.

What are you talking about? Captain Falcon has been in the series since the original N64 version.

SirBryghtside:
I hope this is a feature for all the characters, if only to see this community's reaction to a Justin Bailey costume for Zero Suit Samus :P

She did have a pink alternate color in Brawl which was an intended reference to that, but I agree they ought to go full on with it, one piece, green hair, and everything. Considering all the different suits Samus acquires across the games, she's really gotten gypped so far.

Yes, but can she date/screw whoever she wants in the game? No? Then it's sexist bullshit misogyny and to be avoided at all costs.

Well why not, given that the Villager is in the game - a decision I question the wisdom of.

No reason not to do it, no reason to do it. If it was done just as a cool alternate, then nice. If it was done because Nintendo was afraid of some PC backlash if they didn't, then as a planet we've missed the point of equality.
