RUMOR: Namor Movie Could Be Coming From Universal

Is Marvel's Atlantean Prince the top-secret project from Universal Pictures?

Several days ago, Universal Studios revealed that they had laid claim to a November 4 2016 release date for a yet-unrevealed "tentpole" blockbuster co-financed with production company Legendary Pictures (recently decoupled from its exclusivity with Warner Bros.) Ever the bugbear of secret-keeping major studios, gossip site Latino Review is reporting that some industry insiders believe that the project could well be Namor: The Sub-Mariner, the lone Marvel Comics character whose screen rights Universal still owns.

The half-human ruler of an undersea race who can breathe underwater and fly (thanks to tiny wings on his ankles), Namor debuted back before WWII as a villainous character who attacked mankind for crimes against the sea and scrapped with the original Human Torch - though he was converted into the publisher's first "antihero" during the war so he and Torch could both fight The Nazis. The character was later resurrected in a 1960s Fantastic Four story, which established him as a morally-ambiguous schemer and a romantic rival for Sue Storm's affections.

Namor's actual "ownership" in terms of a hypothetical movie have long been the subject of dispute: Because he derives (some of) his unique powers from the circumstances of his birth, he's often marked as Marvel's "original mutant," and Fox is supposed to own movie rights to all mutants (and also the tertiary cast of Fantastic Four, which he's often considered a part of.) However, as his original publication predates all of those, Marvel itself could have the primary claim. All of that is moot, though, if Universal does indeed still hold the rights which, according to Marvel president Kevin Feige, they do - a fact which came as a surprise to many fans and industry pros.

At this time, Universal has issued a "no comment" on the rumor.

I don't know, this whole things seems to be rumor using only the fact the two companies stated "no comment", which means absolutely nothing given how in the past "no comment" has been a confirmation just as often as a denial.

Eh, if i was to make any movie involving Sub-Mariner i certainly wouldnt make him the sole protagonist.

But if i was Universal and i wanted to get in on Marvels movie money train, i would probably dig out the oldest, most obscure and least relevant characters to use for a movie so long as it was legitimately connected to Marvel.

Other than that, to my knowledge Universal hasnt actually done a big superhero flick, so it could be interesting to see if they could pull it off.

Would be interesting to see a namor movie. It would be different due to the water setting and something that will set it apart from other movies. Same as GotG is set in space. :-) I do hope they do work with Marvel to a point to ensure they do a great job for the fans.

I'm gonna be the Debbie Downer here and say that I have absolutely zero interest in a namor movie that isn't connected to the MCU. MCU makes obscure heroes work, I don't think even the premise of Namor on his own has the power to be a huge blockbuster, I reckon it'd end up as 'Green Laternish' flop. I could be wrong, but I'd never see it so in the end it doesn't matter.

EDIT: After being on here since 2008 I finally hit 1000 posts, quite a milestone.

Finally the hero that everyone has been clamoring for, and the opportunity for people who know comics to tell their friends and family, when asked, that he's "Kind of like Aquaman, I guess."

It's funny really. Even if some other company owns the rights to other characters, they aren't going to be able to hold onto them. Disney being who they are WILL get the rights back to every Marvel franchise eventually. It may take a while but it'll happen sooner or later.

Universal themselves I figure would be too busy cranking out more Fast and Furious movies considering their financial situation. The only reason they'd want to make any thing related to comics would be from the success Marvel/Disney are having right now.

Still all this could be a rumor so I take it with a grain of salt.

Wait, shouldn't the IP rights to Namor revert to Marvel/Disney by now? Universal has been sitting on that IP for some time and this is the first time I've heard any possible news of production even if it is a rumor.

That's probably why: they're running out of time and want to jump on the superhero bandwagon with the property they paid for. Sadly, I think it's going to take a miracle for anyone to care - of all the horses on the track, he's probably not the one you should hedge your bets on (though maybe they bought him because he was cheap).

Yeah, I feel that a solo Namor movie from Universal might not work by itself. I could see Namor work better if he was in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Something like having him appear in a Captain America sequel that shows he was around in the 1940s and then revive him for the 21st century. Maybe that could lead to a solo movie of his own. But a disconnected Namor movie outside of the MCU is going to be a very hard sell.

Except a huge mutant jerk and militant womanizing dictator!

Personally id love to see this movie, but as it would be either unfaithful to the comics or very niche audience I hope its just a rumor for Marvels sake.

I'd like to see a Howling Commandos movie, with Human Torch/Namor in the vein of the original Cap movie. Second world war, less about building "The first avenger" and more storyline based... but no, they froze cap, and that era's passed for good
