Report: Sleeping Dogs HD Spotted for PS4, Xbox One

sleeping dogs

UK retailer ShopTo briefly displayed "Sleeping Dogs HD" on their storefront, with a November 21 release date.

Sleeping Dogs was one of the sleeper hits (no pun intended) of 2012, coming out of nowhere and delivering an enjoyable sandbox experience that basically put you right in the middle of a Chow Yun-Fat movie. Now, UK retailer ShopTo may have accidentally spilled the beans on a HD remake for next (current?) gen consoles.

Sleeping Dogs HD was briefly listed on their storefront, as a title for both the PS4 and Xbox One, with a November 21 release date, before being pulled. The picture looks somewhat legit, and ShopTo is a fairly major retailer. We've reached out to Square Enix for confirmation.

Last thing we heard from Sleeping Dogs studio United Front Games' is that they were working on a follow-up to Sleeping Dogs called Triad Wars. It was revealed via an off-screen teaser image in December 2013, but we haven't really heard anything about it since.

It could very well be that Triad Wars is simply a HD remix of Sleeping Dogs with additional content, which is what ShopTo has leaked. We'll update this story as we know more.

Meh. Sleeping dogs felt to me like a Batman Arkham game with reduced animations and less smooth combat, mixed with a GTA game with worse shooting and driving controls and a bland variety of weaponry. The idea sounded good on paper, but the game itself was mediocre.

So... wait, does that mean the original game wasn't HD?

Uh.........why?

Like, I can kind of understand The Last Of Us Remake, because it was a PS3 exclusive, so people may not have had the chance to play it as they didn't have a PS3.

But Sleeping Dogs came out on PC, PS3 AND 360, I wouldn't really think that it needs to be redone....

Maybe the console versions weren't? =)

Sleeping Dogs was pretty beautiful but I can never work out why; its plot is pretty predictable, the characters all cliches, the physics were a bit crazy at times... yet it worked so well. One of the few games I 100%'d and got all the achievements on. I guess it'd be nice to replay it with extra shiny graphics though.

Best open world game last gen for me.
Interesting city, great combat, good transition from hand-to-hand to firearm combat made weapons actually meant something, driving was fun, story was predictable but okay....
Interesting to see how the HD version looks....hopefully they give me the chance to update my old one.

Sleeping dogs was a beautiful game for me as well, great fighting mechanics mixed with some GTA and great music. However I'm not really interested in a HD remake since I've played it on pc, they should just go ahead and make a sequel instead.

I think it's that because ins pite of all those things it basically did everything right, it was like playing through an old kung fu movie and incredibly enjoyable for it.

OT: Good to know there's still nothing on either of those systems to make me buy one.

I enjoyed the game alot, loved the combat mechanics, something that should have been added to Watch Dogs. Thing is there seems to be loads of HD remakes coming out, dont remember them doing that many during the PS2/Ps3, Xbox/360 cross over. You had multiplatform titles, but dont remember any specific remakes. Personally i would be happy if they did that for older games Soul Reaver etc for current gen platforms.

You mean the PC version with the HR texture pack, yep played it already.

Yep, exactly. I mean, could we have some new games? I liked that one, but I've already played it. This shouldn't be as hard as it starting to seem like it is.

Well I own Sleeping Dogs twice over. I had the PS3 version long before I got my PC but that version runs badly and crashes like a heroin addict thats won the lottery. So I got the PC version to actually bloody play it.

But yeah, new games please, that's why I have a Wii U; it has new things.

Kmadden2004:

No but you see this HD has more HD in it than the previous HD. Honestly couldn't they just go with Remastered Edition and not insult peoples intelligence?

I guess Deus Ex:HR is next on the list. They'll probably just port the PC version of that as well.

I did like this game, finished the story very quickly and did lots of side things too. I remember thinking the city felt a bit claustrophobic but I can't really remember why, I just think it had a lot of segmented sections separated by highways or tunnels. MY ONLY REAL PROBLEM is for some stupid reason you would date someone for like one or two missions and that would be it. I know there is some report stuff in the game filling in what happened to certain girlfriends and stuff but it is still pretty stingy. I mean you give me a character who I really do like and then just pretend like I never met them afterwards.

Somehow I don't see this being fixed in the updated version. Also I get that the HD just means a higher definition than the previous version, better lighting, resolution and all that but it does seem strange when we used to call games HD remakes because they were being released in HD for the first time not just HD updates.

Any bets that Ubisoft trademarks the word "Dogs" and files a suit against Square Enix?

The only two i can think off is Bully:Scholarship edition and Lego Star Wars:Complete Saga, but yeah it was not that common back then

And now we see why there isn't backwards compatibility on most of the new systems. I'll bet nintendo is kicking themselves for the WiiU having full backwards compatibility with wii games.

Eh, never really had an interest in Sleeping Dogs. I tried the demo and found myself bored out of my mind. I might give it another go on my PS4 though.

So HD is now a marketing term like "Gold Edition" or "Game of the Year Edition".
OK.

This had better not be Triad Wars.

Anyway, I wonder what the additional content is. Same DLC they've been selling? Something new and exclusive?

I love the game, but I don't think even the latter would merit it.

dumbseizure:
Uh.........why?

Because there's a dearth of games worth playing on current gen consoles.

Or possibly because other Hd versions have sold. Which probably leads back to point one.

It turned an action movie into a game. And honestly, when you're looking for an action movie, you're probably not concerned about complete originality. What it did, it did well, even with its flaws.

I mean, I'm honestly not in the "games should imitate Hollywood" vein, but it can be done and it can be done to good effect.

Sleeping Dogs doesn't need an HD edition. Last of Us doesn't need an HD edition. Tomb Raider doesn't need an HD edition. The more I see of the next gen consoles the more I wonder what's the point?

No backwards compatibility for the Xbone and PS4. To make up for that, we're going to re-sell you all the games from last generation to play on the current generation instead of being consumer friendly and offering a version of the Xbone and PS4 that comes with backwards compatibility.

... and people wondered why I said "fuck buying the new generation of consoles."

Also, didn't Square Enix put Sleeping Dogs on its list of games that "weren't successful" or (in other words), it didn't make enough money for Square Enix to be happy with it? Why are they wasting more money remaking it instead of... oh... I don't know... giving us a sequel? Giving us a new game? Giving us a new Chrono Trigger instead? Fuck this bullshit.

Worgen:

Why? Who would go buy a WiiU version of a Wii game? There weren't that many games on the Wii I would consider great. And many of those I wouldn't really re-buy either. It'd be just cheaper to buy a Wii for $50 and keep the games you have.

Well, considering the wiiu has some decent power behind it and the wii was only slightly more powerful than the original xbox, I can think of a few games from it I wouldn't mind seeing with real graphics, like Twilight Princess or Xenoblade or the Metroid Prime Trilogy.

Finished this game just yesterday actually, was in my backlog for several months now.
I would say it was pretty decent, though I was zooming through the story and didn't really touch anything else beyond health shrines and jade statues.

The game has a severely clunky feel to it, after being spoiled by batman, Wei Shen's movements felt like he was carrying boulders on each limb. I suppose they were trying to make combat more realistic, but I still didn't enjoy the input delay.

Speaking as an Asian who understands the dialect spoken by the characters, I'd say it does an impressive job in capturing the Hong Kong feel, like a true asian movie, though some of the cantonese did seem forced and gratuitous, I supposed that's because I actually understood them, and many times they were basically repeating what they just said, only in cantonese. Perhaps if I didn't understand them it would feel more like how Ezio inserted some italian into his conversations, which I really liked.

The story itself was a missed opportunity, it started off so well, yet in the end didn't deal with the tension of undercover cop vs triad member, everything was sort of resolved for you, you didn't feel like you had any choice in your path or destiny at all. That's just a minor gripe though.

Still, I don't think this game warrants a re-release like this, I like to call it the darksiders of open world sandboxes, it mixes tons of ideas and mechanics from other games with a fairly original concept into a stewpot, but just can't carve an identity of it's own. Sleeping Dogs of course does better than Darksiders in this regard, but still, releasing a current gen sequel, with a special bundle price that comes with the original, and also allowing separate purchase, would have been better.

Even though I probably won't buy it if I end up getting a next gen console I am happy to see it get ported since they may be using it as a test to see if people have enough interest to warrant a second game which I want badly. Sleeping Dogs is easily in my top 10 games of this generation and is the third best sandbox game I've ever played, it did quite a bit different from other sandboxes such as making a non American city its setting which brought about many interesting things such as an increased emphasis on hand to hand combat, different culture, and little things like having to drive on the left hand side of the rode.

So this generation is going to be that of re-releases of old/barely old games to a new system along with PC riding piggyback on this new bandwagon slight goldmine?, this is probably why I'm better off with getting a Wii U.

It does do a good job of capturing the vibe of Hong Kong, but an abysmal job of replicating some of the key areas. I drove up to The Peak and it looked nothing like the real deal. I thought I might be able to drive down to the massive ferry terminal and look across Victoria Harbour to Kowloon. No dice. I would have been nice if you could travel to Kowloon or Lantau Island as they have a different vibe to Central, Admiralty or North Point.

Hopefully this is something they might do if they ever did a new Sleeping Dogs game. You could catch a ferry across to the 'Walk Of Stars' and spar in front of the statue of Bruce Lee.

double post sorry

I can't speak much for this aspect, because the last time I went to Hong Kong was almost a decade ago, too young and too long ago to remember much of what I experienced. I will say though, the next game should let you cross over to Macau, what with it being one of the gambling capitals of Asia, I'm sure they could stage an arc around those 5 star hotels there like the Venitian. I also hop they try to include Disneyland as well, haha.

Actually that is a great idea! I was in Macau a couple of years back and about 80% of the cars, no matter how crap they were, were tricked out to some degree with body kits. And as you said, the casino fronts would look awesome.

Yeah, just like many others are wondering, why? Sleeping Dogs looks fine already. It's a game from 2012 for god's sake. Oh wait, money and lack of games. Right.

I'll definitely not be getting this thing, but when they do come out with a sequel that surpasses this, then count me in.

Doesn't have to be Wei Shen, besides his cover has been fully blown so he can't go undercover anymore, would be cool to have him back in some way though, afterall, HE'S WEI SHEN MOTHERF*CKER, eats pork buns to become a whole man.
