Japanese Artist Scans Her Vagina for 3D Printing, Gets Arrested

Megumi Igarashi Vagina Boat 310x

Artist Megumi Igarashi arrested after violating Japan obscenity laws.

Tokyo-based Japanese artist Megumi Igarashi was arrested by police after sending 3D printer blueprints of her vagina to crowdfunding award recipients.

The "obscene" data was sent after Igarashi completed a crowdfunding campaign with the goal of building a boat in the shape of a vagina (which seems to have been completed earlier this year).

Due to Japanese obscenity laws, it's illegal to transmit images of genitalia, male or female, online. The 42-year-old Igarashi, who goes by the artist name "Rokudenashiko," sent the data to 30 people after the crowdfunding campaign ended.

"I cannot understand why the police recognize the 3D data as obscene material," said Igarashi, according to the Kyoto News Agency.

Rokudenashiko has long been known for her genitalia-focused artwork, from "Pussy Boat," down to smaller works, like vagina-based dioramas. Her goal is to break down the taboo surrounding genitalia in Japanese culture.

Excuse me, what?!

What the flying fuck is going on out there? I mean, seriously, what the fuck did I just read?

Japan has obscenity laws?.. since when?i find it funny that Japan of all places would get mad about this sort of thing considering that country has thousands of manga, anime and live action porn related films/stories along with merchandise of just about anything you can imagine.. including.. i think.. sex shops that are right in public along side other mainstream stores.. not that i's want a boat shaped like a vagina, but it's her vagina and she can do what she wants with it....

More power to her in trying to break such a stupid taboo. It really strange how their XXX rated stuff is censored I mean it really just boggles my mind.

Its pretty funny how japan is known for having some of the most perverse media (comics, tv, film etc) in pretty much the world yet STILL they have these utterly crazy obscenity laws so dated and out of touch with the modern world its hilariously ironic.

Why do you think "tentacle porn" was invented in Japan? Their obscenity laws forbid depictions of male genitalia... but not tentacles that could serve the exact same purpose.

It is utterly ridiculous given how prominent their porn subculture is and how pervasive it has become, and yet everything is permissible so long as they smudge and blur the image of the actual genitals.

Meanwhile, here's some underage girls in Dead or Alive in thongs dancing on stripper poles.

What underage girls? that's a CGI animated drawing.

For underage dancing girls you have to go to the USA

relax it's not anything illegal.

Generally speaking, if an internet denizen happens upon japanese pornography, it's probably been de-censored by some third party before they laid eyes on it.

For its kinky reputation, Japan has a phobia of depicting genitals (both male and female) that makes America seem downright liberal by comparison. Firsthand porn from japan is so heavily mosaic-laced and censored that I imagine someone from another country would have a hard time using it for its intended purpose. XD

The boat should be like it is but with two tiny black bars. That or just a low poly vagina.

Ow, I choked on my popcorn after reading the title. Interesting story but I have to say, the title caught me by surprise.

Isn't it normal for sex shops to be right alongside other stores? Where else would they be? I live in a town in England mainly known for being an old-people's town with tons of retirement homes, or (at a bit of a stretch) a Victorian holiday seaside destination, and there's at least 1 sex shop along our high street.

From what I gather about the Japanese censorship laws though, they're very outdated but they're never repealed because no one wants to go down in history as the pro-pornography guy.

OT: Yeah. Not something you read every day. I don't think I can formulate a proper response to that, and seeing the picture of the boat vagina makes it clear that it would be futile to even try.

Aren't anti-obscenity laws supposed to be reserved for dictatorships and dystopian future societies?

I mean, I've heard of similar laws in some states here in the US that ban sex toys. People seriously need to learn what freedom is.

Well obviously! She had to be arrested. Can you imagine what would happen if millions of vaginas were let loose on the internet? Society as we know it would end! Thank goodness the Japanese government is keeping our internet vagina free!

This is the moment where I come to terms with the fact that juvenile humor will continue to make me laugh way too damn much.

The "Vagina Boat" still has me chuckling. I just... I can't... why can't I stop laughing???

I think there's at least one sex shop in my city, but it's a bit out of the way... i saw it once passing by in a car and it definitely wasn't out in the open

She should have 3D printed someone eating feces. That would have been legal for some reason.

"Pussy Boat,"

I love this women, this is the best pairing of words I have ever seen, SET SAIL!

I would like to see those made because it would be hilarious.

Japan is weird.

They passed those laws, yet they pushed by a guy who is a NOTED, 'best selling?', RAPE/rough sex 'novelist'.
So, of course, written text is except.

Wanna write a book about some '18' year old getting brutally raped...and then falling in love with her rapist?
That's fine, it's legal.

Wanna draw a picture with a women's vagina, just being, well...a vagina?
Nope. Illegal. Jail. Fines. Etc.

W-T-F Japan.
Seriously.

I don't see how that vagina boat would work . . . there is a big hole in it. Anyway yeah, Japan is a weird and unpredictable place, I find it very amusing.

"Due to Japanese obscenity laws, it's illegal to transmit images of genitalia, male or female, online."

Wait, does that mean porn is illegal in Japan?

It seems Japan still has its bizarre see-saw relationship with sex and genitalia.
The same country that states depictions of full body rape are fine...as long as the orifices are blurred or boxed.

oh, never change Japan

Neeckin:

Sort of, everything has to be heavily censored.

As mentioned above there are workarounds that have been used to avoid most censorship at the cost of visual or recognizable anatomy, but even something like a realistic dildo would need to be censored if in video or image form.

I can understand the goal and find it commendable, but...why a boat?

I'm more baffled that you can't send pictures of your genitals to anyone in Japan. What a joke.

Dunno because of this heavy censorship they were forced to think of new fethises and ways to arouse people. Probably because of that Japanese porn is some of the kinkiest and most perverted there is out there.

Vagina boat: Not obscene.

3D Printing data of vagina: Obscene.

I think the obscenity laws need reworking.

I'm surprised noone has mentioned that The Vagina Boat should be the sequel to the '70s/'80s sitcom The Love Boat. Love with vaginas is better than love without!

Noooooo...the vagina is internal. That's a giant vulva.

(Always annoys me when people mix those up)

A lot of people would dispute that...

The even sadder thing is it is precisely BECAUSE of Japanese obscenity laws that we see such utterly deranged demented and depraved Manga and anime. You cannot show a realistic Penis penetrating a realistic Vagina... but the law says nothing about 12' demonic tentacles.

And yeah "scanning ones Vag for others to 3d print"... ummm WTF!?!?!

Who else expected this to be about homebrew sex toys?

Japan ... that makes me sad. Just let her do what she wants.

Obviously she didn't find it sexual. Not all art/sculptures of our private parts are 'arousing' or meant to be sexual. A lot of people drew naked bodies because they find them beautiful. There's a museum that hired a couple to have sex because they deemed it 'art'.

Now it's debatable, but truly I don't see anything wrong with this. Sure it's WEIRD and I was stunned by what she did... but is it wrong? Not really, i've seen worse. Arresting someone for this shows just how outdated and dumb your laws are Japan. Stop it bros.

That's really not unique to Japan. All of the most horrible and violent acts I have ever found in works of art/fiction, I read about in books.

Yet while Grand Theft Auto is decried for raising a generation of murderbots and Marilyn Manson gets blamed for school shootings (I'm not up to date on my cultural references, sorry) absolutely any one of any age can walk into a library and borrow a crime novel about horrendous murders or brutal rapes and no one will bat an eyelid.

The entire worlds view on censorship and taboos is fucked up, so as dumb as this woman being arrested is, let's not act as though there aren't plenty of examples happening in our own countries, too.

http://www.cracked.com/article_19098_6-wtf-japanese-trends-you-can-blame-white-guys.html

'Murica is to blame for their anti-obscenity laws too. Long story short - Japan has a history of embracing erotic art, until the 1900's when Western ideas came in to tell them that they really should be more ashamed of their icky parts. As is often the case with these things, the laws stuck around long after they became irrelevant. What this woman is doing is pretty cool - fighting the silly cunts that are always and will always be trying to legislate their weird ideas of morality. At the same time she is slightly increasing the number of vagina-related material out there. Everybody wins (except for the weird old morality legislators I guess)

Now here's a question, do these obscenity laws apply to medical books or sex ed books?
