Giant Mystery Hole Opens in Siberian Region Named "End of the World" - Update

Mentlegen. We knew this day was coming. We have been warned and we have been prepared. Now it is upon us.

The Mole-People have begun their incursion. Let us send them back into the ground. One way or another.

The partypooper in me knows it's just a Sinkhole.

The crazed and eccentric sci-fi and fantasy fan in me desperately want's to believe it is the dwelling of some massive creature that only appears once every millennium to cause untold havoc and destruction. Only when it's unfathomable needs have been sated does it return to beneath the earth to disappear into myth and be forgotten.

Well German saying: "Arsch der Welt." = "Ass of the world."
There you have it!
Will you end up in a russian prison if you go down there or try to close it?

Well it doesn't look like a MUTO had crawl out of it since there were no trailer coming from the hole but none the less it kind of scrary looking (the total darkness part of the hole).

*looks at the news*

*remembers 'This is The End'*

*Gets a red speedo and orders two machine guns*

Ok. I think I'm ready now.

Sinkhole. Just another side effect of the underground iceflows melting and moving on. In other words, global warming! Maybe they can find a thawed out prehistoric lobster creature in the pit like China did.

Fiz_The_Toaster:
It was clearly made by a legion of Dugtrio.

That's absurd. It's the creatures from that documentary, Tremors.

BigTuk:

Don't be absurd. We're not openly invading you sun-lovers for another five years. We're in the slow assimilation phase of our plans, I mean... The mole people don't exist.

I'm just trying to decide what would have been better to see in the hole, now: a giant eye or a giant set of human teeth.

Maybe just one big finger.

This is so cool.

Sinkhole doesn't explain the debris around it. something pushed up the soil before collapsing back in.

The theory of a gas pocket explosion is likeliest, imho.

My money is on a Nydus Worm.

Mole people. They are renowned for their love of borsht!

I bet a meteor hit a sink hole.

Well...

This isn't terrifying at all or anything...

So just break out a assload of guns like they did in the movie? :D

OT: I'm really not sure how to respond to this but wonder if anything will crawl out of it?

See that ball of gas, floating BILLIONS of miles away? That's 100,000,000 years old!!!

*a giant hole forms in the ground*

"Duuuuuuuuuh, we dunno! What is it?" "oh but I could tell you how old it is by looking at it!"

science, proving just how bad it is! :D

Well, there's only one person who we could send down that hole to investigate its native origins...

Jhonie:
Well...

This isn't terrifying at all or anything...

No no no... When Lavos surfaces, he's feasted upon the energy of a planet and wrecks the entire surface, leaving a dead and gutted world. and the area isn't big enough or cataclysmic enough to be a point of entry either. We're fine.

Ikaruga33:
Grab your demonicas men.
We're going into the schwarzwelt.

I like you.

GundamSentinel:
Well, at least it isn't the door to Hell, because that one is clearly in Turkmenistan.

Jesus on a penis I need to visit that place. :o

Well, I knew it would happen sooner or later.

It's Alienz.

Mr.Mattress:
It's the gates of Hell opening up! And we need to shove a bunch of cows down there to close it up. (CKII References)

Weak. Sacrifice your first-born Son!

OT: This is..interesting. And also rather terrifying when you consider just what kind of bacteria and god knows what stuff has been sleeping in the permafrost of russia for millenia. There could be some super-virus frozen down there that could wipe us all out O_o

Captcha: sleepy hollow, no captcha i dont think its the headless horseman.

Funnily enough, the science of the two fields (astronomy and geology), as you might guess, are completely different. Astronomy has many lightyears of completely or nearly completely empty space between earth and the observable phenomenon, and deals with large scale averages structures (stelar structure for example), geologic data is obscured by many meters (or kilometres) of sediments and rock, meaning that we either have to dig for data, or else use methods such as ground penetrating radar to understand subsurface structures. We are also trying to date different parts of the same structure to establish relative ages and subsurface structure, a difficult task for sure. isotopic compositions (best way of dating stuff) can be gathered easily from stelar structures through telescopes because those elements are energised and the emitted radiation of individual isotopes has characteristic spectral emission lines. Geology is more complicated, we have to collect the samples, energise and atomise them in a spectrometer, to obtain isotopic measurements and therefore date the sediments or rocks.

Science is not all equal, and different methods are required for different disciplines. In short, science=GOOD, ignorance=BAD.

What the hell Escapist, sourcing the Daily Fail now?

Which in itself is probably 'sourcing' from who knows where.

I respect the opinion pieces and original content on the Escapist but this really frustrates me, they don't deserve the links.

I know this is not exactly journalism and you want a nice fluff piece on the front page but come on find a more reputable or original source for the material/update if your going to put it up here. :/

Not discrediting the content of the article, but the Mail's reputation for shamelessly plagiarising everyone makes it feel like really lazy to repost their updates. (Even if its awesome like a giant hole).

Bah you're all wrong. Its one of those Tibetan tunnels that criss-cross the planet that collapsed. Damn Tibetans digging tunnels under perfectly good solid ground.

Syan:
Burnly

Putting aside the jokes, you're mistaken if you believe a giant hole in the ground that wasn't there before is nothing. Strange cave-ins would be categorized under 'large geological event', and therefore science. 195 feet across and 300 deep is rather unusual, an isolated underground cavern with - apparently - an icy lake, and you can see there's more tunnels. I'm sorry, but that's interesting. Interest makes news.

Captcha: I'm yours

Maybe it's a hidden stargate.....thats fallen over.

Reverse cenote! LOLOLOL

It looks so strangely smooth, water vapor is some scary stuff

Clearly this is a sign that Lavos is ready to emerge. Anyone wanna grab a sword or a robot and come help me with this thing?

There's a hole in the world. Seems like we ought to have known.

PrinceOfShapeir:
There's a hole in the world. Seems like we ought to have known.

They didn't want us to remember what happened, so they put a hole in the world to forget!
