Ganondorf, Ghirahim, Zant Playable in Hyrule Warriors

Ganondorf, Ghirahim, Zant Playable in Hyrule Warriors

Players can assume the roles of Legend of Zelda villains, including Ganondorf, in Hyrule Warriors.

Koei Tecmo and Nintendo revealed in last night's Nintendo Direct that three Legend of Zelda villains in particular will be playable in Hyrule Warriors. This includes the villains seen previously for the game, Ghirahim from Skyward Sword and Zant from Twilight Princess, and the classic Zelda villain, Ganondorf.

The Nintendo Direct revealed Ganondorf's inclusion at the end of the presentation. The three villains join the playable cast of Link, Zelda, Impa, Fi, Lana, Agitha, Darunia, Ruto, Midna, and Sheik. While Nintendo and Koei Tecmo had shown images of Zant and Ghirahim in Hyrule Warriors it wasn't until this presentation that they revealed the two are playable.

Just like Dynasty Warriors games, Hyrule Warriors supports two-player co-op. One player can use the TV as a screen while the other uses the GamePad as a screen. The screen resolution will suffer slightly as a result, but Hyrule Warriors producer Yosuke Hayashi said the game will be just as exciting to play co-op as it is in single player mode.

The Direct revealed an adventure mode that uses the 8-bit visuals from Legend of Zelda as a map. Players explore Hyrule with items from the first game to traverse through the map and unlock new weapons and playable characters.

Like Link and Zelda, Ganondorf will have multiple costume variations. Club Nintendo members who register their copy of Hyrule Warriors by October 23 will unlock his Demon King costume. Select retailers will have pre-order incentives with the Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, and Skyward Sword costumes for Link and Zelda.

Chain Chomp from Mario games will make an appearance as well. Link can use Chain Chomp as as weapon, similar to Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.

Hyrule Warriors feels a lot like a Dynasty Warriors and a Zelda game. Koei Tecmo has worked with Nintendo to retain aspects of Zelda games for this spinoff, and that includes things from music, skulltulas, cuccos, and even grass cutting.

Hyrule Warriors launches on Wii U on September 19 in Europe and September 26 in North America.

I hope they don't mean for this to be surprising. Everyone knew Ganondorf was going to be playable. He's part of the Zelda trinity for crying out loud! From the start being able to play as Ganon was one of the top three reasons Nintendo fans were going to get this game anyway, right up there with being able to play as Zelda, and the fact that it's Hyrule as seen through the lens of Dynasty Warriors. Zant, and Ghirahim are just icing on the villain cake.

Although, I suppose this means that the villains will actually be able to win for once. That will be interesting!

I wonder what other villains they'll bring in for this. Maybe Vaati? That would be pretty cool.

Disappointed about the costume DLC plan. I had been hoping that maybe, just MAYBE the costumes would be in-game unlockables :(

Well duh. It is a Koei game. Every character will be playable.

Ocarina of Time's costume set should not be a pre-order bonus. Just... No. It's the most classic set available! It ought to be in the basic game!

On the other hand, Twilight Princess is my personal favourite set... Gah... frustrating money-making practises...

EDIT:
I may have said this before, but if they have Dark Link in game, please make him more than a reskin of Link. And please don't make him a DLC-preorder-bonus...

I am really diggin Ganon's design, shame I don't have a WiiU. The titles coming out are almost warrant enough for me to pick one up but it is going to need a few more RPG titles for me to consider buying it. Though I will say that when I do get a WiiU ( I mean *if* ) I will be picking up Hyrule Warriors just to play as Ganon.

YES!

The DLC thing is rather disappointing though. One of the parts of the industry I was glad Nintendo hadn't embraced yet.

So...no Groose? I can't set my Groose loose in this game!? D:
This game was begging to have Groose in it, come on Koei, make it a surprise character dammit. I know I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Oh, Nintendo games have had DLC in them before, just look at New Super Mario Bros 2 and Fire Emblem Awakening. Plus those games actually did it right, unlike plenty of other developers have (I'm looking at you, Capcom).

Incorrect.

I do not see the Deku Tree as a playable character.

I am disappoint.

/sarcasm ;)

Retailer-exclusive DLC? From Nintendo?

Boooo. BOOOOO.

That's one of the worst gaming trends out there...
... and Watch_Dogs sold about, what, 8 million dollars? Market has spoken.

Hopefully "The screen resolution will suffer slightly" in co-op mode isn't code for "The draw-distance will be reduced to 10 feet" like it was in the Wii and early Playstation 2 Warriors games. That was basically unplayable.

Yeah this saddens me as well. I'm fine with the Ganondorf DLC being a Club Nintendo exclusive, because that's open to everyone. But I don't like the fact that they are doing exclusive retailer DLC. I was hoping Nintendo would be the one company to stay away from that stupid crap. At least it's costumes and not extra missions or items like most other games.

I agree as well, I had always thought Nintendo wasn't one for those kinds of underhanded practices. Perhaps it's Koei Tecmo and not Nintendo that suggested the DLC scheme, and hopefully we won't have to deal with that in future Nintendo games.

On topic though, I like Ganondorf's new look, it's quite visually striking, and I like how they drew elements from Demise's appearance as well. It's a little brighter than what we're used to for him, but that's an interesting change.

Just in case anybody wants to see Ganondorf's gameplay staight-up, I'll post his character vignette here:

There's a lot of worry about he retailer-exclusive costume DLC I've begun to notice. As it occurs with games on Sony and Microsoft consoles, this exclusivity is probably only based on a set time limit. After a while, I am sure that the costume sets will be available for download from the Nintendo eShop. That would not surprise me in the least.

Regardless of that situation, the new characters look like a lot of fun, Zant in particular (in my opinion). I love the Dynasty Warriors games, 4 especially. This is looking to be a day one purchase for me.

Count me in, I'm stoked.

Well he is in the game...as a summon (and possibly sex doll) used by Cleavage Witch Cia:

Also, I noticed the Direct gave a glimpse at two new stages, one being obviously the Gerudo Desert and the other being this combination of the Forest Temple, Temple of Time, and Sacred Grove. Also, someone caught this when Nintendo was tweeting about playable characters:

Looks like Cia might have accidentally revealed as playable.

Is...is that a Cucco army? Helping Link incapacitate a mob of bad guys? That sets up too many jokes for just one battle.

Plus, I assumed it would be a toss-up for Zant's personality, so it's nice to see they went for completely crazy. That'll automatically make the rest of the roster look twenty percent more respectable.

Wh-what the heck is up with Ganondorf's hair? Did I miss the one Zelda game where he becomes an 80's glam-rocker?

Yeah, that is one industry trend I was hoping Nintendo wouldn't get on board with. Not impressed.
Still looking forward to this game though.

that's great and all
BUT WHERE IS TINGLE AND RED BOAT GUY?

It would be incredibly weird if she wasn't playable given this is a Warriors game and any character with a unique look is pretty much always playable. Question is just how to unlock her.

By becoming her pet, uh, I mean, probably by playing through Adventure Mode. They already said that you unlocked characters by playing it so it wouldn't be a stretch to say that the villains are unlocked here.

Is that so? Then yeah that's probably how. For finishing the mode perhaps.

not really. warriors games have always made every important character playable, no matter what side they are on, even if their moveset is unbelievably bullshit overpowered. it would be downright unnatural for anybody with a specific name and a moveset to not be playable, although i suppose the game is treading new ground in nonhumanoid enemies. those will probably be unplayable, but mostly due to control differences and inability to equip subweapons.
