Rumor: Rockstar Cancels Grand Theft Auto V PC, Delays Next-Gen to 2015

Grand Theft Auto V screen

Website of the original source has been hacked by 4chan/Anonymous in retaliation.

According to a report on FoxWeekly, Grand Theft Auto V might never make it to the PC.

The report sources a man named Brad, who says he worked as a Rockstar Games marketing manager, before starting a marketing firm of his own.

The website for Brad's firm, called Rantic, has since been hacked by Anonymous and 4chan, with the message "Hacked by 4chan, Give us our GTA 5 for PC," left on the homepage.

In the same report, Rantic Chairman John Hoffberger says that "Rockstar never wanted to release a PC version of GTA V, but due to high public demand, they were forced to do so."

While the FoxWeekly report says the next-gen (PS4, Xbox One) Grand Theft Auto V release dates should not be impacted by the PC version turmoil, other reports now suggest that next-gen releases could be pushed into 2015.

VG247 says Rockstar brought next-gen versions of Grand Theft Auto V to Gamescom earlier this month, but those versions were only being shown to retail partners. The "chatter" also pointed to a delayed release, with no new versions hitting until 2015.

The Grand Theft Auto V E3 next-gen reveal pointed to a Fall 2014 release on the PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

We have reached out to Rockstar for comment on the PC cancellation, as well as the console delays. We'll be sure to update accordingly once new details come to light.

Minor Update: Assuming the Rantic website is restored to working order soon, here is a screencap we took of the hacked homepage.

Wow... if this is true, PC gamers are going to be mad...

(And the comments section of the original article attests to this)

Well that's a pretty scary rumor. Hope it's just some guy poking the very nervous, easily excitable bear that is the gaming community...

It's sad that Sony/ Microsoft can legally pay off companies to not put their products out on other systems. The whole third party exclusive nonsense just hurts gamers in the end. First party I understand...you make the game and the system, but third party exclusives just shouldn't be. I prefer playing single player games on the pc. If rockstar doesn't want my money so be it

Many of us have waited a long time for gta 5 to come to pc. If rockstar STILL refuses to support PC then its simply time to move on

But seriously, that would be a tragedy. I think it might even lead to rioting on a scale that has not been seen before.

I'll wait until I hear it from the horses mouth before I react, though I will say that if it turns out to be true I'll be bummed that I won't get to play GTA V on the first PC I will have ever built. Alright Skyrim, with all your mods, looks like you might be back as first up to bat.

So the biggest thing I took away from this was a former marketing manager, that is, someone who no longer works for Rockstar Games, released some information about an unconfirmed delay, and 4chan/anon/whoever actually did it HACKS HIS PERSONAL COMPANY website which is unaffiliated with Rockstar Games, demanding GTA V for PC.

Is it just me, or are these hacker collectives getting collectively stupider at an exponential rate?

I'm inclined to believe the delay, if for no other reason than it had already been reported by the IBTimes and a couple other sources a while back. That doesn't mean it's true, just that it's a little more in my credibility zone. the PC cancellation? It wouldn't surprise me, but it'd be a bad move.

I don't think there'll be enough popcorn for the thread.

I can already see how this threads gonna go down. PC gamers are gonna start screaming "Consoles hold game hostages!" and then make it sound like GTA 5 will be a total failure without their money. When in reality PC holds more games "hostage" more than anyone else and GTA 5 was one of the best selling games of all time, for only two consoles. I think they'll be fine.

Anyway, it's a damn shame. It was a pretty solid game. I'm even enjoying Online now, that I could finally beat the fucking tutorial. No one plays Cypress Heights anymore, which is a required job to play to finish the tutorial. Stupid!

Its like Rockstar is afraid of making money or something

Oh noes, my internet crashed put still posted. First double post in the forums too, how exciting!

They hacked the guy, who no longer works for Rockstar, asking for a PC release? That's sharp.

About the news, I cannot care less. A PC release would be a crappy port that would run like shit.
If I wanted to play GTA5, I'd do it on 360 or PS3.

I'd say it's less that hacking collectives are getting stupider and more that hacking soft targets gets easier every year and most companies probably don't worry too much about securing their own website. I doubt these attacks are the result of highly trained specialists given how often these sorts of things tend to be bored teenagers.

That would be disappointing, but not surprising. If they're running into current gen (it's not next gen anymore!) porting issues and they've got to decide where to cut some spending, the PC would be it.

But I'd like to think this is all just a silly rumor and they'll still be releasing it for the PC at some point.

Yeah... PC holds games hostage...
Yeah...
Logic... The one free platform...

And as if there is such a thing as enough money. "Enough" and "money" are words that cant exist together.

OT: Will wait to see if its true. Currently, it looks like it aint.

If they were considering caneceling the PC version, surely this'll be a slap in the face to stop 'em. But frankly I'm not convinced they are. FoxWeekly isn't exactly the greatest source.

P.S. Thanks

I was referring to the part where the target has absolutely zero impact on the goal. This is like a local news channel reporting on an election in a foreign country and hackers targeting the local news station that reported it demanding a ballot recount in that nation or else.

More and more of these are less about "fighting the good fight" or whatever, and more about being obnoxious fucking trolls who do far more harm than good to everyone involved.

Heh, within the first few responses we get a "Rockstar has been payed off" thought.

Meh, even if it did go to PC it would probably be a shitty port. Rockstar just hasn't cared for the past few years.

It's 100% fake. It took them a year to bring it to next-gen/PC. The hardware inside the consoles is similar to the PC, and since Max Payne 3 they know how to code RAGE for the PC. And it's Rockstar. They don't just announce a PC version without being sure that they can release it.

I don't really understand how a website can be "hacked by 4chan"

JoJo:

Meh, shows the rockstar wants money. It's much easier to get twitchy console gamers to shell out $60 for a game, especially when they're in a slow release cycle. PC Gamers... will wait until that price drops to 30, and there is no real slow release period for PC...so they actually have more competition which again forces more reasonable prices.

I have my doubts about the source, but if true I suppose its at least better than releasing a train wreck similar to that of gta iv on pc.

FOR THE LULZ

Lol, not laughing at the fact GTA5 may never come to PC, though their is a certain comedic value to it. No I am laughing at the fact that the hacker community then went ahead and hacked the website of someone who HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ROCKSTAR, he just happened to work for them once before going off to do something else.

Its like Rockstar is afraid of making money or something

PC Modders, crummy anti cheat system (at least the console versions seem to indicate this) and a cash stream that is heavily dependant on free add on content being paid for quickly by impatient players using real world cash to quickly buy in game credit.

I called it months ago that an inability to prevent PC gamers from modding the game content and then taking their mods online would lead to Rockstar never releasing the game on PC.

The part of me that I hate wants this to be true - just to see what happens.

I love a bit of online rioting.

I care very little for GTA, but I have a lot of friends who are excited for it, and I imagine that a lot of PC gamers are super excited for it also, so Rockstar would have to be pretty stupid to cancel it, although they never ported Red Dead: Redemption over to PC, so I wouldn't put it past them.

Oh man, I've gotta get to GTAforums right now just to see teh dramas.

You say that but Max Payne 3 was actually a very good port.

It wouldn't surprise me though if Rockstar do this, they seem to be becoming more and more anti PC, kind of ironic really as they started on PC.

Elfgore:

You what? How?

Yeah, not buying it. Rockstar is milking their cash cow and, when the time comes, they will tap the PC. It's just so damn profitable to soak up the cash console sales before it winds up on Steam.

It'll come. The spice must flow.

Dont really care if it reaches PC or not. But it is funny that Anon think that hacking a web page will make Rockstar release it on PC. lol. These hacking groups really think they have any weight in changing anything a multi million pound company does. Regardless, im thinking this is false, wasnt that long ago Rockstar said it will be released on PC and i doubt they would change their mind now. Now the next gen version i can see them not bothering with.

Part of me is like: "Cancelled, that is dumb."

Another part of me is like: "Keep your gaming you whiny little bitches!"

It's just strange when they are like, "We don't want to release it, but they demand was so high we were forced to take $60 from every PC owner just to make them happy. We don't even want their money, but they won't leave us alone."

Either do it or don't do it, but don't keep your mouth shut about it. This is why I hate how speculative these types of articles are. They didn't announce a PC version forever, but everyone is like, "It'll come out in like a year."

Gamers: How about we wait for them to say something rather than speculate like mad dogs, which turns rumor into fact for a lot of people.

Rockstar: Shit or get off the pot. Make an announcement either way. I seriously have no respect for you since you have little or no respect for your customers.

Better even, they hacked a website of what is a completely unrelated company. If I read this right, the guy used to work for them, but now he has his own company. Hacking that website is like being thirsty and going to moon to try and get a drink of water.

I don't get how Rockstar can be forced into releasing pc??

GTA V still has a Steam Store page up so I doubt its been cancelled. Especially when the source of the rumour is literally "a man named Brad".
