SCEE President: Sony Needs To "Suffer"

image

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe President David Reeves says the company may have to "suffer a little" in the short term, but that overall he still has confidence that the PlayStation 3 is going to work out very well.

It was a rough Christmas for Sony. The company ate a loss of almost $200 million in the third quarter, and sales of both the PlayStation 3 and PSP were down. Sony's game division income dropped by a staggering 97 percent in the quarter, and the company that once dominated the market with the PlayStation 2 now finds itself buried in third place in the three-way console wars.

Yet SCEE President Reeves is taking the long view and doesn't appear too concerned about short-term difficulties. "We simply have to suffer a little, go down in market share and mind-share," he said. "It's like Ali v Foreman - go eight or nine rounds and let him punch himself out. We're still standing, we're still profitable and there's a lot of fight in us. I don't say we will land a knockout blow, but we're there and we're fighting."

His Zen-like calm apparently stems from his steadfast belief that Sony's PlayStation 3 strategy is working, and that the European territory will turn a profit by the end of March. "Our priority has always been the PS3; the forecast was ten million at the beginning of the year and it's still ten million," he continued. "If we'd cut the price, lost another billion dollars, we might have had a huge Christmas but it would have been followed by a huge loss. The company could have thought: 'Hmm, I'm not sure I want to be in this business at all.' But we've shown Sony this is still a good business to have."

"Look at the capability of the machines," he said when asked how Sony justified keeping the price so high during a worldwide economic meltdown. "With PS3, you can go online for free, it's got all the games you want, it's got a Blu-ray drive so you don't need a new player, you can store photos on it, and you've got Home. Admittedly, in the current climate, more people will go for the lower price, but we still make a profit and that is our objective."

And despite its dismissive attitude in the past, it sounds like Sony is finally ready to admit that Nintendo is, in fact, a competitor, and a very effective one at that. "We've learned from Nintendo how to grow the market and move from handheld device to device - they've done it brilliantly," he admitted. "And we've learned an enormous amount from Microsoft, too. Overall, the market has sharpened up individual competitors to do better - we should celebrate the industry and how we've collectively grown it beyond all recognition."

Sound strategy or misplaced optimism? The PlayStation 3 has been slow out of the gate but Sony is banking heavily on its ten year lifespan and capabilities as a multimedia device, which it believes offers far more bang-for-the-buck than either the Xbox 360 or the Wii. But at some point Sony has to stop the bleeding; suffering for a greater long-term good is one thing, but suffering because you're lying half-conscious and bleeding in a gutter while Reggie Fils-Aime and Aaron Greenberg stomp the crap out of you is another matter entirely.

Sony's strategy might work if anyone actually cared about the blue-ray format.... i've got a friend who's a major film buff and owns a PS3 and do you know how many blue-ray movies he owns? two! that's it! most consumers are simply unwilling to pay the high price blue-ray movies are going for when the difference isn't very noticable...

Argh! I read the title, didn't realise what SCEE was and thought some mad CEO of an obscure company was doing an Emperor, all hunched over in black cloaks going "I want to see... suffering."

Amazing what a vivid image 6 words can give.

Well it's nice to see Sony acting like adults about the situation for a change. I'm a little concerned that it might be too late, but I hope not, they've got a great system there, even if it is a little pricey.

Blu-ray discs are just as expensive as DVDs were, when they came out. I remember buying Godzilla on DVD for the same price that I bought the two disc blu-ray edition of The Dark Knight. Blu-ray will lower in price eventually, it's a slow process, converting formats, DVDs took more than a few years, blu-ray won't be any quicker.
And difference is very noticeable, although it does depend on the film, I dislike watching normal DVDs now just because they're quite a lot grainier and it bugs me, as well as the sound lacking a bit.

Ding! We have a winner!

Also there's the fact that HD televisions are still not the dominant television format just about anywhere as far as I can see. I myself do not have HD-TV, and I know only a few people who do.

And none of them have a PS3 which can only lead me to believe that they don't need Blu-Ray that badly.

I didn't know Sony hired Mel Gibson to run SCEE...

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, so Sony's game division belongs in Arkham asylum. I still don't understand why Sony and Microsoft are so reluctant to admit that Nintendo is a competitor in the console race.

believe me, i know exactly what you're saying about the price for early adopters... i remember when VHS was new and some movies cost upwards of $80! but i think that Sony jumped the gun on the format too early and tried to force the market to accept something it wasn't ready for yet... if they'd been a little more patient i think they wouldn't be in the financial state they're in now...

Ok, admittedly I don't own a PS3 so I can't say much as certain fact, but I remember the PS2 hype about the great features of the PS2 validating its insane launch price. End of the day, PS2 made a real shitty DVD player, and not even a year after launch, "real" DVD players were under the $100/ea price. All the Playstation 2 really had going for it was games, which is fine, that's what a console is supposed to be for. PS3's failure is a lack of games, well a lack of good ones, and it tries to hard to boost its image on the "added value" features.

Taking his quote step for step:
-Online, the PS3 sucks compared to both the Wii AND the 360.
-It doesn't have all the games I want. It actually has very few of the games I want, and it has lost exclusivity on the few titles that made it worth buying for (ie FF).
-Above I already covered the pointlessness of pitching a built in player, plus that is NOT an added value to the machine if you had a Blu-Ray player before buying a PS3, nor if your screen isn't large enough to merit HD.
-Ohh, yay. Playstation Home. Let me just put on a happy face for that. Or not.

So yeah, price matters when you have nothing else to offer.

do all companies act like everythings fine and danty when their doing badly? cause if so i don't trust him one bit

Dont forget that blu ray does not offer the same upgrade as DVD vs VHS did compared to dvd
(blu ray looks better)
plus porn helped DVD but the internet has really killed that idea so blu ray did not get the benefit.
Sonys real problem was a lack of games strange really considering its the only profitable part of the the loss leader strategy in the console industry.

-The PS3 is way better online than the wii ( in that you can actually play a multiplayer game on PSN for over 30 seconds without it crashing, unlike the wii network) and there's little difference between PSN and XBL. Sure XBL is a more refined experience, but for the millions of dollars they get for it, it should be WAY better, and it just isn't.
-Only FF13 is on 360, not the other accompanying games ( such as FFvs13, which, since i saw the trailers 3 years ago, i preferred to FF13) and is only on 360 in Europe and USA (its still ps3 exclusive in Japan, which is where a vast amount of FF fans reside, im sure.)
The only good xbox exclusives (in my opinion at least) are Halo, GOW, Mass Effect, and PGR. The ps3 has a game to counter each of these (such as Resistance, God Of war, FFVS13, MGS4, and Gran turismo)
-Blu ray is a massive improvement on DVD, but the improvement is insignificant if you don't have a HDTV.
-As for Home? Its good fun going round with digitized versions of all your friends playing mini games, chatting etc, and there isn't really an equivalent experience on the other consoles, but its hardly a unit seller for the ps3

we got bonuses at work and by far the biggest one everyone got was the ps3, simply cause it has a blu-ray player and it can play games, the next biggest one was the wii and funnily enough no one got the 360

Actually, Sony addressed this in the article itself;

It's surprising that Sony is still getting alot of flak when they're admiting their mistakes and are saying that they're learning from their competitors. Whether that's true or just some PR stunt is debatable, but it's still annoying to see people going off against the company because "blu-ray doesn't matter" and "the online sucks" when they're showing humility.

He isn't even talking about that stuff but you guys continue to reply with the same message that's been tried and tried again and can be disproven (most of the time).

You should have just said 360. Strong community and good store. Don't care for the Wii's friend codes, and can't use the store since the system won't update. PSN's US store is grossly slim in way of games.

Khell_Sennet:
-It doesn't have all the games I want. It actually has very few of the games I want, and it has lost exclusivity on the few titles that made it worth buying for (ie FF).

Yes, nothing makes me want a system more than a Squenix title that hasn't even appeared on the horizon. I cry a single tear for you. I feel the need to make fun of the wording here. I highly doubt any system will ever have ALL the games you want, and since the game you example is not released no system technically has it.Also, do people really care about exclusivity anymore? I always considered it just a tack-on stat for fanboy wars (not to mention the PC pretty much destroys any system's exclusivity.)

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go buy a new computer for Duke Nukem Forever.

Khell_Sennet:
-Above I already covered the pointlessness of pitching a built in player, plus that is NOT an added value to the machine if you had a Blu-Ray player before buying a PS3, nor if your screen isn't large enough to merit HD.

You got it wrong. It's a Blu-Ray player with gaming hardware. Base price of a Sony Blu-Ray player is roughly $300 according to my local 'Best' Buy. Price of 80gb PS3 from same store is roughly $400. So what you really have is actually the cheapest current gen gaming console tacked on to a really expensive disc player. How. Very. Odd.

Khell_Sennet:
-Ohh, yay. Playstation Home. Let me just put on a happy face for that. Or not.

I can't say much more for you that you haven't said yourself if you believe Home contributes to a buying decision. By the by, I have a car for sale with an extended warranty and lease options available if you're interested. I parked it under my also available bridge.

really? since when there's several hundred items in the playstation store, slim would be a couple items, there's at least 20 new things added each week, kotaku has a great summary of the updates they put out each week

Blu Ray is only an improvement over DVD if you have a TV large enough to merit HD. On my 36" for example, it would be no better than DVD. Blu Ray isn't some spectacular new technology, it's just a higher resolution size. No large TV, no HD benefit. The ONLY thing Blu Ray offers a non-HD user is the increased storage space.

And worth note, a good quality upscaling DVD player reduces the quality difference between DVD and HD/BluRay back to the damn-near insignificant levels.

Fanboy: Zealous person favorable towards one object they own while vehement towards another they do not.

And yes some could call me a fanboy of the PS3 (owning one) since I constantly jest about the Xbox 360 (not owned.) But I am one of the better types, having atleast constricted myself to as close to proper English and punctuation as my American raising can warrant. Although I do constantly end sentences with a hanging preposition. It seems pretty common among my dialect.

I also stand by my statement. I get that e-newsletter every week telling me what 19 new movies are available along with a demo and DLC. However, since on a primarily gaming website where people primarily talk about games, one would assume I don't care about the movies. The PSN's offered selection of games for the current and back systems is still pretty skimpy in the U.S. as compared to Japan (thanks internet.)

And DLC is oftentimes a waste of money. Every now and then there's a nifty expansion that actually holds value, but it's usually just cosmetic accessories.

Or cheats to bypass actually playing the game.

I've looked at the ps3's stuff, and I rather like the way it looks. The dashboard UI alone has a very calming feel to it, unfortunatley it doesn't have the huge game selection I want. Even for the games I do want that are on it I can easily just buy them for 360.

Sadly though I will be buying in the far future when god of war 3 comes out....rat bastards making it a ps3 exclusive. One can only hope they will have a change of heart and give 360 a slice of the pie so I don't waste money on a system for one game....

EDIT Yes, I'm a diehard GoW fanboy

So Sony Computer Entertainment Santa Monica (the people who make the series) should give a game whose rights Sony owns completely to the 360, despite the fact that it would mean doubling their workload or signifigantly scaling back their ambition?

actually both ps3 and the wii are behind in Japan not only in the store BUT in the games that are offered on the system and always have been for each and every generation of console. any gamer would know this if they've bothered to follow more than one generation of game system. i remember games for the nes that you couldn't get in north america cause they were japan only games.

as for the movies well 360 offers them so should the ps3, it's just a keeping up with the jones, as for downloadable stuff, there's actually some amazing games on there, such as echochrome and pain

Yes...yes they should, why should I have to buy a completley new system just to play one game? Its the exact reason as to why I never bought a Wii, that and a laundry list of other reasons that make a crazy person look sane.

But yeah, I knew who was making it, and it does make perfect sense that sony would want to hang on to at least one title they know wouldn't go to the Wii or 360 on them they know will sell like crazy.

So Sony Computer Entertainment Santa Monica (the people who make the series) should give the game to the 360, despite the fact that it would mean doubling their workload or signifigantly scaling back their ambition?

Yes...yes they should, why should I have to buy a completley new system just to play one game? Its the exact reason as to why I never bought a Wii, that and a laundry list of other reasons that make a crazy person look sane.

But yeah, I knew who was making it, and it does make perfect sense that sony would want to hang on to at least one title they know wouldn't go to the Wii or 360 on them they know will sell like crazy.

You don't have to buy a completely new System, if you knew you were going to get it eventually you could have just bought a Ps3 to begin with.

I've looked at the ps3's stuff, and I rather like the way it looks. The dashboard UI alone has a very calming feel to it, unfortunatley it doesn't have the huge game selection I want. Even for the games I do want that are on it I can easily just buy them for 360.

To begin with, I was holding out hope that there might be a 360 port. Secondly I'm not going to buy a system so it can collect dust on a shelf while I wait for a game that I know is 2-3 years down the road from the release of the system. The ps3 has nothing I want, not yet anyway, the fact that GoW3 is a ps3 exclusive really makes me inclined not to buy it. Despite the fact that it would forever torment me I don't have it. Wasting, what is it, 400 or $500 on a giant black paper weight is not something I'm prepared to do. I'm dead serious, GoW3 is the ONLY game that appeals to me on that console.

And don't give me the blue ray bs, I don't own any blue ray dvd's nor do I intend to buy any when they have cheaper dvd counter parts.

One more than the 360s.
