That's a pretty bold statement, one I already don't see them living up to, and won't see them living up to in the next 10 years... Just my opinion though... Gears never did it for me. Played through em both, and yeah, really not my thing.
So there's someone else at Epic who is almost as egomaniacal as Cliffy B.
Damn Epic for living in my state >: (
...I can't tell if this came before the other thread.
In other news, Police today found the drowned body of Joshua Ortega in his home.
I like Gears of War, but I don't think it will live up to the Star Wars longevity. I'll probably show it to my kids and they'll think it sucks compared to 'Virtual Online Sex Party 5' or something.
"The lancer is the new lightsaber" Bwahahahahahahahahaa. BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA! Thank you for the laughs, Mr. Ortega. I needed those. Oh, and say FU to CliffyB for me, will you?
There's a difference - the Lightsaber isn't fucking useless in all areas.
Then there's the fact that the added weight of the chainsaw makes aiming harder, meaning it defeats its purpose as a rifle.
Epic failiure of a statement. Gears is pretty cool, but to even think of trying to rival Star Wars, thats what I call folly. I guess it's good to know for Xbox owners that there are another 10 years of Gears. Maybe they will sort out the multiplayer by the end of that period. :)
First there's the comment about Halo being the next Star Wars, and now this. It's nice to know that all of these IPs that are nothing like Star Wars are striving to obtain the same glory...but...uhh...I have nothing else to say. It's just stupid.
I couldn't agree more. If Gears dethrones Star Wars I will admit Star Wars is geeky, and light all my video games on fire.
But......the hammerburst is better....
Likewise for me Frank, takes a big pair to claim a gun with a chainsaw on the end of it is the new lightsaber.
Gears of War? They should call it TEARS of War.
Finally, I've found someone else who likes the hammerburst.
Yeah no, not even in the slightest. It's one thing to say that something is going to be the next Star Wars. It's something else entirely to say that something is going to be the next lightsaber. While the lancer may be cool, it just isn't the thing people imagine when they pick up a stick, and I doubt that it ever will be.
It's marketing guff, it was either that or Bigger than Jesus, except that's been done to death.
The Police are becoming a little more subtle in their brutality?
It's hardly a subtle way of brutalising...
Bottom line people: should I invest my hard earned (hah, yeah right) cash into the Gears of War series? I never did get round to buying it, and people seem to be talking about it all the time, which is increasingly making me wonder if I'm missing out on a truly amazing gaming series. As for the ten year plan thing, even if I was a fan of the series it would annoy me that they are trying to milk it to death.
The Lancer is the new Lightsaber?
That's sort of a deathtrap right there. When you say that something you have is going to replace an everyday pop culture object, you run a large risk of alienating the fanbase of said object. With that quote, he might as well have just said, "Gears is better than star wars!" Poor choice of words, there.
all i can say to that is.............hahahaahhahahahahaahhahahaahahhahahaha
If you think that's bad, you should see what I think my grandkids will be playing.
Lightsaber is the number 1 weapon ever. The Lancer is probably somewhere in the 70s, since not as many people know about it.
ya me too problay like Halo 39 and they will go to the movies to see "The Texas Chainsaw Masscure Remake Number 304" (how ironic for what gun were talking about) and by the way i think that lancer has replaced it but im a gears fan so my view is kind of one sided but most people who didnt like gears think that it didnt replaced it so their view is a little one sided to (which i would like to add that many people didnt like gears)
What?! Lancer in the lightsaber status? Obviously spoken by someone so untrained in the ways of dealing death. Oh so untrained......
Hallelujah, I've found TWO! On-topic: This is pretty arrogant, and I don't think the Lancer will come anywhere near the lightsaber in terms of awesome weaponry. On the plus side for the Lancer, you don't have to be a Jedi (or Sith) to wield it effectively. But yeah, shut up and sit down, Mr. Ortega.
Comparatively speaking. Water to the lungs in a bath Vs a truncheon to the head in the street. Or the bath.
With all due respect to Epic -- I love Gears 1 & 2 -- he's wrong. There is virtually no chance that the rather simplistic Gears universe can ever surpass cultural impact and popular culture legacy of the Star Wars cannon. And I *HATE* Star Wars. The Lucas behemoth will never be threatened by something as paltry as a video game, even if -- as was the case with Halo 3 -- the video game does better retail numbers than any piece of entertainment ever released before it. There's more than money to the throne of skulls atop which Star Wars currently sits. There are decades of serious, bred-in-the-bone fanboyism and serious cinema. Star Wars practically invented the concept of sci-fi/fantasy epic as far as film is concerned. Gears stands on the shoulders of giants. Given the Ortega comments, maybe it needs to sit down.
I loved Gears 1, and I enjoyed Gears 2. But I don't have much hope for this series if this is the kind of ego maniacal assholes they have working at Epic. They should keep their delusions of grandeur to themselves and concentrate on making the games better instead of telling people that a gun which I thought was nameless until the second game(they made it a point for us to know its name in the campaign), will dethrone the light saber from its pop culture throne. As cool of an idea the Lancer is, Star Wars(and the light saber) has a huge cult following of all ages dating back to 1977. Gears of War has only been around since 2006.
Head backwards so far it goes up bum into small intestine where it drowns on bile, that's how subtle I was thinking. But I see your point.
that was pretty bold of him to say. although mainstream, gears of war isn't nearly as big as star wars.
Like I said before it's more "Epic Pretentiousness" than "Epic Games". Also I'm glad people besides me understand that strapping a chainsaw onto a gun is a stupid idea for multiple reasons. Hell this thing isn't even the new phaser, much less the new lightsaber.
No. It's not. | |

Gears 2 Writer: "The Lancer Is The New Lightsaber"
Gears of War isn't going anywhere. With a "ten-year plan" in place and major hints at a prequel game and single-player DLC for Gears of War 2, series scriptwriter Joshua Ortega thinks "the lancer is the new lightsaber."
Seems that Halo isn't the only Xbox-friendly franchise with aspirations to the pop culture throne currently occupied by Star Wars. Epic has well, epic, plans for the franchise going forward in the next ten years, including a movie, a prequel game, new DLC for Gears 2 and more.
Asked by fans at the recent New York Comic Con if Epic had any intention of making a prequel game that detailed the beginning of the Human-Locust war, Joshua Ortega, the scriptwriter on Gears 2, implied that something was coming...in the next decade. "You will not be disappointed in the next ten years," Ortega said. "It's a ten-year plan. Gears is long-term. The lancer is the new lightsaber."
Somehow I can't see gigantic machine guns with chainsaws being as iconic as laser swords, but I suppose that's a matter of your taste in phallic symbols. In any case, a decade of Gears certainly isn't hard to imagine. Beyond the two games already out, the inevitable sequel and the now potential prequel, there are plans for a comic book and, moreover, a movie, which may or may not become a trilogy, if director Len Wiseman has his way.
Regarding the near future, however, fans pressed Ortega on the possibility of single-player DLC for Gears 2, which has had plenty of multiplayer love content-wise but nothing added to its campaign. Like what seems like every other blockbuster game in 2008, the Gears 2 ending was not exactly conclusive or satisfying - could we be due for another DLC pack that adds "the real ending?"
"Keep watching," Ortega answered. "You won't be disappointed."
