Make Way For The FEARcats

image

Don't let them cross your path: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is releasing decked-out black cats in the city of London tomorrow to advertise the launch of F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin.

WBIE spokeswoman Charlene Allen said the promotion is expected to grab attention at a time when research shows that belief in superstitions is at an all-time high in the U.K., driven by the fear of bad luck in bad times. Thus, the creation of a misfortune speedball consisting of trained black cats wearing F.E.A.R. 2 kitty sweaters roaming the streets of London on Friday the 13th.

"Every day people are bombarded with so many advertising messages that it can be easy to miss them," Allen said. "With our research telling us that Brits are actively looking out for signs of bad luck this Friday, it makes perfect sense to try and capture their attention that way."

Bizarre yet brilliant, I say. WBIE was even offering free kitty couture to the public, but unfortunately they've been cleaned out. Perhaps they'll stock up on more to take advantage of the PETA hysteria that's sure to follow.

F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin comes out in the U.K. on Friday the 13th. If you happen to stumble upon one of these fuzzy billboards while on your way to pick up a copy, snap a photo and send it in!

You've got to wonder where and how they got all those black cats.

I think it's important to point out that the cats are trained, so they're not just going to be wandering around willy-nilly.

I think it's also important to point out that I really, really want one of those little FEAR coats for my own kitty.

The real question is how many of them will get hit by cars; damn London taxis.

Ah, I was wondering.

Regardless, it is undeniably awesome.

Death by bicycle courier is more likely, they're silent and a lot faster than a London Cab.

Umm quick question. What happens after Friday the 13th? You just released an army of cats unto an unsuspecting city, how do you plan on getting them all back? Bob Barker must be going nuts right about now.

EDIT: Posted while Susan posted.

P.S. Do they come in a medium dog size by any chance?

This is pretty amusing and pretty good advertising. Here's to hoping that they don't get hit by cars.

And why every store in London is mysteriously out of black hair dye...

I thought that in Britain it's considered lucky for a black cat to cross your path?

It's the second wave of advertising, wherein they release hundreds of spooky Alma lookalikes to run around town, that worries me.

I don't have any black cats but I still want a sweater or two. There's only one cat in the house I'd even consider trying to put it on, so I hope they come in size "fatass."

(And I did say the cats were trained, you know.)

Hooray for something I don't know where I stand with regards to...

FEAR rocks and this is a really great idea, plus if it freaks people out to see a whole bunch of black cats on Friday the 13th, ad or not, all the better.

But I also am sick to death of advertisements, we are bombarded with ads 24/7-365 and to see this here now, I know it paves the way for them doing this for a whole whack of other things.

originality? wow, i'm surprised, this doesn't happen much nowadays

Nope unlucky

It would be pretty cool to see one tomorrow.

I can't wait to see the after effects of this one. I don't care how well trained those cats are - releasing them en mass? I am sure something good will happen... *finger tent*

Wikipedia disagrees:
In places which saw few witch hunts, black cats retained their status as good luck, and are still considered as such in Britain and Ireland.

I really want a FEARcat now, such a cool idea.

that is good advertising...

Oh bugger, so you did. Sorry for ignoring parts of your mighty post, Malygris...

Wikipedia lies.

Wait... So they are going to release stray cats into Britain to advertise a game... What happens to the cats after?

So, they are trained to walk around London alone? Do they have a trainer nearby or are they on a leash? If not they are so getting stolen or going under a bus. Anything can happen in London.. somebody could set them on fire!!

A road covered with dead FEAR cats could be hilarious but ill advised advertising.

Either Joystiq or Kotaku mentioned a phone number to call to get a FEAR 2 cat vest.

Only problem was that the person calling has to receive it in the UK or be a UK citizen (can't remember).

Some other articles show pics of the cats on leads. I assume the cats on show will be on on leashes as well; "cat herder" is a known term for a reason.

Somehow I think this is worse than those "Lite Brite" toys they scattered to promote Aqua Teen Hunger Force in Boston that were mistaken for bombs.
-If Londoners are feeling scared/superstitious right now, why would you attach your product to black cats that make them scared/superstitious? Wouldn't that drive most people away from the product?
-And creating extra stray cats at the same time? Brilliant. They're already eating squirrels over there, maybe they'll switch over to feline?

Susan Arendt:
so they're not just going to be wandering around willy-nilly.

Yeah, their FEAR logo might not show up from all the blood or tire marks if something were to happen... On the other hand it would make it all that more scary.

So...cute...

I'm with Susan on this, I want to give my kitty a little FEAR vest. Assuming she didn't claw me to death in the process, she's also a Tabby/Calico/Torby so not really black.

EDIT: I'm also pretty sure these cats will be safe from Cars for the most part, barring some "bad luck". I've been to London, since the friggin Pigeons there know how to use the crossing signals one must assume that Cats could be taught to as well.

Yeah, i just checked it out since the escapist article doesn't really make it clear. So hopefully no FEARcat pancakes then .. still would be funny tho.

Basement cat incites fear2 into the masses.

Interesting idea, I hope that the cats do alright. Owners will probably be walking the cats around to prevent accidents. I think that this would be pretty surreal to encounter...

...

Trained cats? Isn't that an oxymoron? I bet $100 that in the next week we'll be reading news stories about F.E.A.R. cats turning up in all kinds of unexpected places....

You're confusing Britain and Soviet Russia again.

That cat actually looks good, I want one of those coats for my cat, that way he might feel more like a male cat, since my parents took Bob Barkers advice.

Personally I think that a couple of dirty, scary looking little girls with FEAR shirts wandering around London would attract more attention.
