Copy Clerk Posts: 71 Joined: 31 Dec 2008 | I've seen people on Steam who put 80 hours a week into TF2, or similar numbers in people's Xfire profiles. People with addictive personalities will probably end up being addicted to something. If it wasn't WoW or some other video game it'd probably be watching TV, or masturbating...or worse, an actual narcotic. I'm an ex-WoW player, but I haven't played for a year and a half. I won't lie, I played it too much, but I don't feel that I was addicted, I just didn't have anything better to do with my free time, of which I had too much. With 11 millions subscribers, I'm sure there are going to be a lot who give the rest a bad name. I don't think it's appropriate to call out a specific game and label it dangerous. And if you do, you have to label ALL games dangerous. |

Because being 'like drugs' means it's got the awesome parts without the possibility of instantly dying, parts. |

Copy Clerk Posts: 54 Joined: 26 Jan 2009 | I don't think there's any chance of WOW getting banned here (Sweden rocks, whoo!). The only game I can recall ever getting banned was Postal 2, but I think that ban got lifted in the end. WOW is really popular here though, most of my friends are playing it or have played it at one time. I tried it after watching South Park's "Make Love, Not Warcraft", but I just couldn't get into it. Och skithus, fan ta dig själv. =) |

Only for us history buffs. ;) I hear ya though. Late summer 'til mid-November was like a blur to me once my friend introduced Europa Universalis to me. And NOW he's gabbing on about Hearts of Iron, saying it's one of the best games he's ever played, that I should totally get into it, etc. I'm inclined to believe him, but I'm still hesitant to fork over the $30 to get it on Steam. Plus Empire: Total War is coming out. I don't need to tell you how addicting THAT series is. "Just ONE more battle!" |

The longest I've ever played for one session is 36 hours. And even I think thats not really that HARDCORE. |

And as for the Health Institute, like I mentioned, anything taken out of moderation has hazardous potential, so it's really just common sense. |

With the aforementioned games it's more like "just one more war"... Or "just one more province, I know I can expand my nice little (big!) blob just a bit more"! I got Hearts of Iron Anthology (HoI I + II + nice map and badge! :D) brand new from Ebay for just 12 Euros shipping included. You can find it really cheap! I also found Europa Universalis III complete for about the same price. Do some bargain hunting, it is worth it. As for WoW, the moment you realise a whole day has gone by and you've done nothing but play it, you know it's getting dangerous! I've been there as well, thankfully not for long or as hardcore as some er, hardcore people. |

Seizures can be triggered after 10 minutes of game play in someone who has never had them before. They're a very difficult thing to diagnose and pick up on unless you've had them before. I think that the whole "He seized after 24 hours" thing is just some pretty evidence to say "Omg, see what happens?" thing. Not really helpful, but it looks great on the court case when that kids Mum sues Blizzard for damages and health care costs. |

Well....at least we know it's not lupus. |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 914 Joined: 25 Apr 2008 | I'm usually (read: always) against the groups who lobby or condemn a certain game, but I actually somewhat back this one. I wouldn't go as far as saying that WoW damages the soul (heh), but it's painfully addictive and I personally know of several instances in which it's really hurt someone's mental health or social life. At the same time, what can you do? It's still a quality game for all intents and purposes, and there's no way that Blizzard can make the game any less addictive. Gaming addiction is unique in that it's more of a fault in the player than in the product itself. |

Copy Clerk Posts: 107 Joined: 4 Feb 2009 | I didn't realize that playing video games could put ones soul at risk. In fact I would argue that it keeps a lot of people from going out and sinning (glued to their damn computers playing Wow). The people who argue that video games lead to some kind of demoralization forget that if that was true there would be should be a lot more crime and debauchery than there is (like a number relative to ALL of the people who play video games). But I guess an excess of anything could be called idolatry so what do I know. I do think that video game use among children should be monitored (like parents should shut the damn things off every once and a while and make the kids go outside) but I think this is a parenting problem and not one of video games. Like a few people have already said; all something like this youth foundations campaign is doing is buying Wow more advertizing. There is no such thing as bad publicity. |

yeah agreed, they only rip on wow because of its 11 million player base, which there are games that have more players than that, just they don't keep actual archived details about how long the people play. I have a friend that puts 40 hours a week into L4D that just beats any wow player right there. |

Meh, I don't think I'd have 30-40+ days on any other game, to be honest, and I used to play Starcraft A LOT. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1220 Joined: 5 Feb 2009 | For fucks sake, the kid that collapsed PLAYED THE FUCKING GAME FOR 24 HOURS STRAIGHT. Who the fuck does that? And why the hell did his dad/mom let him do that? It's not the game that is "dangerous" it's the damn players and/or their damn parents who don't give a crap. If his dad/mom really cared about him THEY WOULD HAD CLOSED THE DAMN COMPUTER AND MADE HIM STOP PLAYING. But No, let the kid play it for 24 hours then blame it all on the game, not the damn parents for not being able to take care of their son. And World of Wacraft is the most "sinful" game? What the hell did world of warcraft sin whit? |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1220 Joined: 5 Feb 2009 | Oh why the hell do they keep hanging on the fact that the kid collapsed after playing WoW. I mean think about it for a second, why didn't his parents do anything to him and let him actually play the damn game for that many hours. Why didn't the kid stop by himself? But if there's anyone to blame here it's not the game, but the parents themselves. They have responsabilities. Just 'cause they blame everything on the game doesn't mean they don't have a blame themselves I mean again...why did they let him play that much? Also it's wrong to condemn only wow for this, people do play a lot of Counter Strike, Team Fortress...Call of Duty? etc. So even if WoW is banned, cases like this will always happen. Every single online game is addictive, and even if you remove one game, another one will soon take it's place. But again, it's not the games themselves who are the problem here, it's the people themselves. Before you condemn video games for being violent addictive and such, think about it for a second. If you see a kid playing GTA most "game haters" will soon go and say that games should be banned and give that crap has an example. But if we think about it again, who the fuck was so stupid to let the kid actually play the game if it's a 18+ rated game? |

Sweden Condemns World of Warcraft Addiction
According to Stiftelsen Ungdomsvård, a Swedish youth organisation specializing in game addiction, "(World of Warcraft) is the crack cocaine of the computer world."
The Youth Care Foundation is about to release it's report in which labels World of Warcraft as "the most dangerous game on the market."
Author of the report, Sven Rollenhagen, claims, "There is not a single case of game addiction that we have worked with in which World of Warcraft has not played a part."
The poster child for the report is a 15-year-old Swedish boy who collapsed and suffered seizures after playing World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King for 24 hours straight.(Which still doesn't sound that hardcore.)
The report also has the backing of the Swedish National Institute of Public Health, which warns of the ever-growing increase worldwide of game addiction.
Of course, WoW isn't just damaging to the mind and body, but to the soul, or so says the American Evangelists, anyway. According to them, World of Warcraft was the 20th most sinful game of the 2008 holiday season. (No prizes for guessing GTA IV gained the top spot.)
