Is Your House in H.A.W.X.?

image

The developers of the upcoming Tom Clancy aerial-combat title H.A.W.X. have taken great pains to ensure that their virtual landscapes are correct - enlisting the same $100 million satellite that powers Google Earth.

Sure, you might not ever actually notice the cities and vistas beneath you as you're hurtling along at barely-subsonic speeds with a bogey on your six, but that doesn't mean that Ubisoft's Romania-based development studio doesn't want to be accurate.

The GeoEye Ikonos satellite is a $100 million beauty, so powerful that it can see objects as small as 16 inches from its vantage point 423 miles above the Earth. The Washington, D.C. company supplies data to Google, making it one of the key players in Google Earth's uncanny ability to zoom in directly on your house.

H.A.W.X. takes that data and integrates it with the developers' 3-D elevation tech to create photorealistic - and accurate - terrain maps that gamers will fly past at hundreds of miles per hour: "The whole point is to give the gamer a real sense of authenticity," Mark Brender, GeoEye's Veep of communications and marketing, told Venture Beat. "It does a much better job than a cartoon map of immersing the player in the experience."

Not quite sure what he means by "cartoon map," but let's give Brender the benefit of the doubt and wave up at the sky - GeoEye just might be watching you.

Cool, I might check that out.

Doubt mine will be in it unless there is a mission over a small town in the UK, but it's a cool addition none-the-less.

Good luck finding an apartment in Ottawa in HAWX...

No Poland?

Then I guess I won't be able to see my house, not to mention the country itself.

bwhahahahahah they will NEVER find my compound in texas! errr, forget i said that.

Neat, too bad they made the camera system suck so much that you spend more time swearing at the screen than you do taking in the scenery.

So is all the data on the disc or does it stream some of it on the fly if you have live?

main guess is it will have a photo of the ground where your mission in the game will be at, however, it isnt released yet, so i could be wrong

this game looks epic!!!

HAWX rendering of Rio de Janeiro was breathtaking.

"Christ!" I shouted, nearly colliding with him.

If I could crash jets into my workplace and/or brother's house, this would be the second coolest game EVER!

Here's hoping there's a mission over Scranton, PA :)

"Hey! I can see my house from-" *boom*

"............"

"Hey! I can see where my house was from here!"

This is going to be such a beautiful game.

I think what he meant as 'cartoon background' is something done entirely by the graphic artists in the game, not having Google Earth trolling the street.

I doubt it will have any levels anywhere near my home...

First coolest game?

On Topic: That is pretty cool and will make the authentic and realistic but I feel as if that money could be better utilized fixing bugs and making the game run smoother.

I doubt my house is in the game since I don't own one.

But you never know. . .

That is the coolest thing ever. I would love to crash into my house.

me too!

Unless there is a mission entitled "Lets go to Oregon to Look at Small Towns Very Few People Have heard of" then no.

Congratulations sir, you just won the game.

This still isn't as cool as the time I was reading stuff about transatlantic cables(shutup) on wikipedia and saw the house I lived in for many years in Ireland.

X-Com, Duh!
=p

awesome, i think i might buy this game just so i can fly a jet to my house :D (and shoot missles at my neighbors >:D)

Sweet, this game actually looks good. I just hope it has a good plot. Anything near as good as Ace Combat 5 would be excellent.

Hopefully they'll put more effort into the actual aircraft though. this is a cool idea but its gonna suck if they make it their ace card and have no actual game play to back it up...

On a related note, where is the game taking place? I don't suppose they'll use Washington? *pokes fingers together*

Please fight over Alaska, please fight over Alaska...

I doubt any action will take place in Toronto, so no.

Secondend, more specifically the Eagle River/ Ancorage area.

Google maps can't find my house, I doubt this game will fare any better

It's a real shame they couldn't put destructible terrain in with this. I spent about 15 mins trying to blow up various landmarks (most notably the statue of Christ in Rio) without so much as leaving a black mark. Oh well.
