New Websites Can Be .Eco Logical

New Websites Can Be .Eco Logical

Al Gore, the "inventor" of the Internet is backing the creation of a new domain name for ecologically friendly sites.

The new domain name, .eco, will be used to host sites that support enviromental causes.

Dot Eco, the firm founding the idea, has applied to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to make the .eco domains viable by late 2009.

"We fully support Dot Eco in its efforts to secure the .eco top level domain through the ICANN application and look forward to working with them to promote .eco," said former vice president Al Gore, "This is a truly exciting opportunity for the environmental movement and for the internet as a whole."

The firm also hopes to channel all the revenues from registration into researching climate change as well as other issues resulting from environmental conditions.

god al gore...

I think its a noble idea. Well done to him. People say he is a nut and a hippi but if you listen to him he makes alot of sense.

guys just humour him, I dont think he has any friends

I think thats actually a good idea. Companies in question get the right stigmas attached to them, and the money itself goes towards research. All involved benefit.

This has got to be the biggest waste in a long time. Nothing good is even stated to come from this. Researching climate change? We know it's changing, and there's nothing we can do about it. The only companies that will take this .eco thing will be the ones that are already super "green" (how I loathe that word).

I definately think they should be taking this money and researching ways to lessen or reverse the impact of chemical wastes on the planet. We destroy untold numbers of plants and animals just from dumping every day goods, not to mention things from factories. This is such a politically motivated waste.

I think the 'research' is one to find the causes and problems associated with climate change, so we can better understand it and help prevent it in the future.

But the climate always changes, and it always has. It's very self centered (i don't mean you) to think that us lowly humans can do something on that grand of a scale in a *posotive* way.
If you prevent climate change, then you stagnate it. Doing that causes all species to become stagnant as well. All in all, it's a bad thing for the world. In a never changing climate, disease will win over healthy beings.

That's not a rant at you, just in general. We're part of an ever-changing world. We need to accept that and make the best of the time we get to occupy it.

Totally agree with you that it's always changed (in an up and down trend). But never quite like this: image
And you gotta take some pride in the human race! There's almost 7 billion of us now. We aren't a lowly species anymore. We've gone to the fu@&ing moon! How many species can claim that? If we can mess with our own DNA and split atoms, whose to say we're too insignificant to mess with the atmosphere?
Or I'm completely wrong and just fear mongering.

I'll care when global warming exists, seriously why won't this guy just go away!?
It's annoying to see this guy trying to dictate what sites should do.

Yes, this is a great idea. Now we can identify these environmental websites so they can be ignored x10 times faster. Woo!

I hate graphs like that haha. Basically i've looked a lot of the stuff he presents, as well as data from others, and you really have to be careful what they're showing you. As an example to compare, look at the second graph from the top here:
image
Looks like the tempurature is high doesn't it? Then you look at the left side of the graph, and see the temperature anomolies are actually more negative (temperature wise) than posotive. We just happen to bein in an, as you say, "up .... trend".

I'm not denying the fact that temperatures are rising consistantly as time goes on. They most likely are, and will continue to do so. But we have to remember that the earth goes in cycles. Volcanos erupt, spewing tons of gas into the air. Cows fart constantly, and they're no help either! I am a firm believer that we're making a neglegable difference in the earths atmosphere.

One last thing to remember is that we have no way of knowing the actual temperatures before what.. 150 years ago? We didn't have thermometers, or cool graphing machines. Hell, we probably didn't even care about how the climate was changing back then.

As for the last part of your statement, I was probably wrong in calling us lowly. We have gone to the moon, and that is indeed a great feat. I'm not saying we can't mess with the atmosphere successfully, I'm saying that I don't see us doing it in a posotive way.

ITS ALL BULLSHIT.

WHAT ON EARTH IS THIS WEBSITE PROMOTING AL GORE FOR?

Ok, no more sugar for you.

How can some websites be more eco-friendly than others? Just kidding, I think its a great idea to be honest.

EDIT: Also, who are we to contest Al Gore, he's ridden the mighty moon worm.

Actually by taking samples of air bubbles trapped deep in arctic ice they can find out the exact temperature it was thousands of years ago. I have no idea how but I am not a scientist.

The density and size of bubbles would both be affected by temperature: there will be fewer and smaller air bubbles if the water is colder when freezing. Doesn't water freeze at 0 C? No, when you're dealing with salt water ice will come out of it at different rates depending on salt content and, again, temperature.

If you look at Frizzle's post again, it has the data for >150 years ago based on that in the graphs he posted, the trick is that NONE of it is as exact as you think it is. What he meant is that all that is before thermometers; the rest HAS to be conjecture based on observational theory.

Al Gore had an impressive idea again! (It's a stupid, pointless, and bizarre idea, but it's impressive.)
Who's with me to found the first porn site on .eco? It'll have to be 'green' porn, of course.

OR not.

Serious rooting, digging in. Anything in film form would have to be sappier than usual, and there'd be some impressive wood on display...

I'll stop now.

Ignore the whole Al Gore connection for a moment. You know who wouldn't like this? Tim Berners-Lee. He finds no point in making domain names that aren't either already in the main list of top-level domain names or else country- or region-specific.

There's also a pressure factor involved. There are areas deep in the ocean where it's over 200 degrees C because of such high pressure, and water boils at temperatures as low as 30 atop mountains.

Hopefully he just doesn't turn off the internet.

Don't take anything from Inconvenient truth seriously, its nothing but propeganda and scaremongering using made up numbers to try and justify what Gore says.

That particular picture relates to the claim that a 6 degree rise in global temperatures over the course of his century would be disasterous, the only problem is that climatologists predict that the most we'll see is 1 degree of warming over the next century.

He used another piece of data collected from ice cores to show a correlation between co2 levels and temperature, but the ice cores actually contradicted what Gore claimed as they showed that changes in co2 levels lagged behind changes in temperature levels by several centuries.

Not trying to get at you but don't take Al Gore too seriously, he might have good intentions but he's not a scientist, he's a politician, the debate of whether or not humanity is having an affect and how great it is if we do goes on.

Another thing that's doesn't seem to be widely known is that we are still in an ice age right now, an ice age is any time where the earth has ice caps, so even if they did melt away that's not unusual.

Excuse the rant but I really hate the blatent political misuse of science involved with this whole issue. And I really hate when Al Gore is said to be the inventor of the internet, he proposed a bill to allow its use in the public domain in America (whereas beforehand it was the exclusive use of the military and universities), he didn't do anything to invent it.

/rant

Seems like a good idea, but really? Is it all that important? Couldn't he be working on the electric car again or something, .eco seems just such a waste of his political whinging skills.

And he caught manbearpig, blew that bastard higher than a druggie in a glue factory.

Okay guys, even if you don't believe in Global Warming, you cannot say that we should continue what we're doing to the environment (for lack of a less "hippy" word).

I don't care if you think Global Warming is a hoax, or that Al Gore gets his statistics out of his Carbon-Monoxide-free asshole, you cannot say that we shouldn't do something about how the world uses up fossil fuels or how it expels unnecessary gasses or how we treat its environment.

The sooner we get more fuel efficient cars and power saving devices, the better.

Though there was a "Penn and Teller's Bullshit" episode on Global warming and some similar topics, but I couldn't find it.

Anywho, it's a nice idea. Nothing too extraordinary, it's like a porn website having ".xxx" for it's domain. It would show people's support on environmental-friendliness and the like.

couldn't agree more, thats why whenever i hear anything about humans changing the climate i just tune them out, that and 20 yrs ago we were headed for a global
ice age

Yeah its a decided scientific fact that the Earth constantly cools and warms over thousands of years. But I like "green" cause I hate the amount of pollution in the air, whenever I go into a large city, I can always "feel" the CO emissions, which isn't nice.

I like the idea. People just love to hate Al Gore though.
