Turtle Rock Studios Releases an Unfinished Left 4 Dead Campaign

l4d-320

The Left 4 Dead developer has made a never-finished campaign available for download.

Now that Turtle Rock Studios has stopped working on Evolve, the team is apparently going through some old files. The company found something good, because it's made an unfinished campaign map for Left 4 Dead available for download.

Titled "Dam It," the campaign was originally intended to fit in between Dead Air and Blood Harvest. It begins with the C130 that the survivors used in escaping Dead Air having crashed, leaving them to make their way through an airport, an apple orchard, and a RV park to a hydro-electric dam, where they have to hold out for a rescue.

The campaign was posted on the game's official forum by studio co-founder CHris Ashton. He notes in the post that "Some code features are missing, but it's playable from beginning to end. It also includes two standalone survival maps that never shipped." The code features that aren't working include,

  • Fire, smoke and explosions do not trigger panic events in the hangars.
  • Zombies do not crawl all the time in the orchard.
  • Farm house mob does not spawn in the far side of the woods.
  • Covered bridge does not collapse with explosions.
  • Burned forest area is missing wandering fires.

Ashton also notes the following:

  • The burning forest section has a burn trigger that stays on too long. If you move quickly you'll take burn damage.
  • The dam spawn room is missing health kits and weapons.
  • The elevator models have an offset origin in the dam. Players can still get on and use them, but they are invisible and wall collision is missing.

This isn't the first time Dam It has been shown off. If you are a fan of Turtle Rock, you may have seen this campaign streamed on their Twitch channel a few months back. You can see the layout of the campaign in the image below (click it for a larger version), including comments from the developers on the idea behind each section.

If you want to download the campaign and give it a try, you can head over to this link to grab it for yourself.

Neat. I would download it, but the link on the download site is broken and gives me an error.
If anyone could provide an alternative download link, that would be great.

Looks like someone in the forum thread rehosted it on Google Docs. Standard "We aren't providing this so download at your own risk" warnings apply. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B6H_R7Is3v0oVUZjVzJnVzJoLXc?usp=sharing

I would love to be able mod and try and fix stuff like this. I feel like most of the assets and stuff is there, so it would be more about fixing the issues rather than adding content. I imagine that this would be a nice bit of practice for people familar with modding.

No, there is still a ton of developer placeholder there. And no 3D Skybox anywhere. Still, I feel the lion's share of work is done.

and ported it in to Left 4 Dead 2 because who on gods green earth is still playing L4D1 when all the campaigns for it have already been converted to L4D2.

I do - because all the added and changed bullshit of the sequel. I have exactly TWO things I can name that the sequel does better: Total ammo for shotguns and that you refill from ammo piles now includes the missing ammo from the magazine and not just the spare ammo.
Everything else? Worse. No exception.
